I was just offered a weekly column in the campus newspaper's new World Traveler section. I thought my pre-departure column that got me the job would make an appropriate first entry to test this thing out before I leave. For one, I can't figure out how to indent the first lines. Preparing to study abroad is a journey in itself - the first step in learning to cope with stress, exercise patience, develop cultural awareness, and accept humility. The first of these lessons I learned during finals. Attempting to understand German grammar is stressful enough without simultaneously attempting to rent an apartment halfway around the world. I frequently envisioned myself wandering the streets of Rome, homeless. Eventually, time-differences and a constantly fluctuating exchange rate were conquered. I now envisioned myself wandering the streets of Rome, enjoying ... read more

Bartlesville, OK We stopped at Monte Casino School in Tulsa. Gail’s new library is beautiful - neat sculptures, a huge collection; it’s not quite finished yet. We headed off to Bartlesville to see Bob’s friend Stephanie and also the Frank Lloyd Wright High Rise. We got here a bit early and visited a soap shop and a candle shop. In the morning we did go to the High Rise, but it was Monday, and it was closed; but we happened to run into the chef at the restaurant. He was kind enough to take us on a little tour of the Wright High Rise. Finally met up with Stephanie and decided to go out for a nice dinner. Stephanie and Bob enjoyed catching up and reminiscing. November 2, Tuesday Bartlesville, OK, Breakfast with Stephanie, then on ... read more

October 29, Friday Tulsa, Oklahoma Oklahoma - we biked the Katy Trail, 32 miles, as we biked along Riverside Drive, which is paved and an easy ride, we realized we were not going into Tulsa. At any rate we had lunch and then returned to Keystone State Park campground, had dinner, and that was it for the day. October 30, Saturday Tulsa, Oklahoma We’re off to Tulsa to Gail’s house. It was a good visit with Gail; her new home is lovely and she was so excited. We had some lunch with Gail’s friends at her new place and off to the Philbrook Museum. We drove around Tulsa and had a wonderful Italian dinner that Gail prepared, and more friends stopped over to visit and say hello. October 31, Sunday Tulsa, Oklahoma Halloween! We’re still in ... read more

October 27, Wednesday Capulin Volcano, NM Drove a “Bob road” - all day. The first stop was Capulin Volcano; we hiked the rim and all the way down into the volcano. Wonderful scenery. Stopped for lunch at the country store, and then on to Oklahoma. We made the high point in Oklahoma, which is the Black Mesa, named for the volcanoes found there. It was a 4.6-mile hike each way; that wasn’t the challenge, the challenge was we were losing daylight. We arrived just before 3 p.m., so we put a wiggle on and started out. The climb is under 1,000 feet, but then there is another mile + across the mesa at the top, one of the largest mesas in the world, to the monument. We did it and were back to see a full ... read more

Hi Everyone,   I'm in Mustang, OK this weekend visiting some friends on my way to Garden Valley, TX for the Mercy Ships Orientation. I arrived here yesterday just in time to see tornados on TV in other parts OK. I didn't see any bad weather on my way down here, only light rain most of the way, so that was lucky. When I got here Helen made nachos for dinner. That was very good. We talked and watched TV the rest of the night.   Today we got up early because some of their relatives were putting in a new heating and air conditioning system for them. We left and went to Best Buy and Crossroads Mall. I didn't buy anything, but David got a new Gameboy. Their whole family was pretty excited about that. ... read more

Hi Everyone, I just got back on Saturday from a 12 day stay in Ardmore, OK doing a Staples remodel. Let me tell you, this one was very different from the Bartlesville remodel. First I'll tell you about Ardmore. Ardmore is a town of 32,000 people about a half hour from the Texas border. It is a very nice friendly town. Between the hours of 8am and 10PM traffic is as bad as Wichita, KS. People are always on the go. It has a movie theatre, several restaurants of varying caliber, a Wal-Mart, a mall, a Hastings Book Store, and a very quaint looking downtown and several other stores and things to do. I was surprised that most stores closed at 8PM. I enjoyed the town more than I did Bartlesville. Our store situation was very ... read more

Staples Remodel--Bartlesville, OK2004-03-28Hey Everyone, I just got back from working 12 days in Bartlesville, OK, doing a Staples Office Supply store re-model. I know I said I'd never do a Staples store again, but the last on I did was almost 6 years ago and I thought I'd give it another go. I'm glad I did. This was alot of fun. Our project leader was Valerie and she was training another co-worker, Joe, to be a project leader. It was so nice to work with them. They were both laid back and pleased with all of our team's work and told us so several times. We didn't have a lot of time to go sight-seeing because we worked almost 10 hour days and then were too tired to do much else. On Sunday, our only day ... read more

Our third leg of Savanna Studio 2001 began in Oklahoma City, after a long drive from Iowa. With our mind set of traveling south, we were surprised to find out that Oklahoma City was almost as cold as Iowa. Some of us didn't care, upon our arrival in our hotel around 9 pm, we were changing into our swimming suits and jumped into the hotel's outdoor swimming pool, which turned out to be so cold. For a couple of seconds after jumping, I couldn't decide whether the water was very hot or very cold; I felt like thousands of needles piercing through my skin. The highligh of Oklahoma City was the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, where a bomb blasted in 1995, killing 168 people including many children. There were some quiet moments within our midst, ... read more
