It's been a week since Dad and I flew home, and unfortunately it's back to reality, which means the insanity of catching up on 3 weeks of missed work. Looking back though, it was completely worth it. Dad and I rode a lot of miles and saw a lot of great things, and overall we both had a fantastic time together. I know having spoken to Dad this week, he's been telling everyone he meets about the trip and Mom has mentioned that his face lights up every time he talks about it. For me it's been the same. I came home to a collage of photos on my office window that a friend of mine at work has been posting for everyone to see, and everyone has stopped by asking me about the trip. It's ... read more

It's depressing that today is our last day and we have to return to reality, but I think a part of us is also glad to get off the bikes and return to the comforts of home, some consistency and a home cooked meal. We got up this morning and packed up the items we'd be shipping home with the bikes, and rode back over to the shipping depot to drop off the bikes. It was a 9 mile ride today which is by far our shortest riding day. We spent about an hour at the shipping depot letting the bikes cool and then having them strapped to the shipping skids. Everything went well and the guys at the depot were extremely nice and helpful in getting the bikes inspected and strapped down. From here, Gary ... read more

Today was our last real day of riding and while we didn't put a ton of miles on the bikes (c'mon, haven't we done enough already?), we did see a lot of different things. We started the day a little later than normal, hitting the road around 10:00am after breakfast. We started by heading downtown to Mormon Square to see the Mormon Temple and a lot of the other buildings and sites in the downtown area. We started by visiting the assembly building which was like many other churches inside, but had an enormous organ. We wandered around and took some pictures, and then stopped into the John Smith Memorial Building to visit the Family Search Center to see if they could help Dad find some information about his parents and grandparents. It was really interesting. ... read more

The last big day on the road was a good one with beautiful weather and clear skies. We left Craig this morning early and got some good miles behind us before getting to Dinosaur National Monument, which would be our last national park for the trip. Unfortunately we ran into some bad GPS directions and thought we would miss it for the day because the GPS kept trying to take us down dirt and gravel roads. So we pushed on and made our way to Dinosaur, CO where we stopped at the park information center and learned that the main area of the park is actually on the western side of the park in Utah. At a gas stop along the way, I chatted with a guy riding from Grand Rapids, MI to northern California on ... read more

It was another pretty easy day today which is good because 6,000 miles is starting to take a toll on us. My shoulder is starting to ache earlier each day than it did at the beginning of the trip, and we're getting worn out earlier after fewer miles. So another easy day with just over 200 miles was nice again. We left Golden this morning and made a quick stop to see Buffalo Bill's grave. Neither Dad nor I knew that in addition to being a scout captain in the Indian wars, and of course running his traveling circus, he was also a Master Mason. From here we headed down I-70 about 20 miles to Colorado Route 40 which will take us almost all the way to Salt Lake City. We passed through the Rockies again ... read more

We had a much easier day today than most of our other days so far, and it's been really nice. We're still here in Golden, CO and being able to spend the day sightseeing in the area without the luggage on the motorcycles has been really nice. We got on the road around 10:00am this morning, so we were able to sleep in a bit and plan out our route at breakfast. We left and headed into the mountains to the northwest of Golden. Similar to many of the other days we've had, the roads were great and the views were spectacular, particularly as the elevation climbed and we saw the snow-capped mountains. Our first stop was for coffee in Nederland, CO. We passed by Buffalo Bill's Coffee and Confections, and decided to stop because it ... read more

The day began with a trip towards Arches National Park on a clear, calm, sunny morning. The ride in was again very beautiful with red rock cliffs along the road. We rode through the park and saw a lot of the main arches they have viewpoints of, but didn't do a major hike through the park to some of the others. Delicate Arch is the one on the Utah license plate and we saw it from a distance instead of a 3 mile round trip hike. We also saw Balancing Rock, which really boggles the mind how a large boulder can be perched on top of a rock spire like that. Overall, the park was amazing, and it's really impressive how many hiking and off road trails they have that would be amazing to spend more ... read more

Wow, what a cold day! On our way through the Utah parks today, we were at high altitudes, and the temperatures for most of the day were in the 40s, and windy! We started this morning by heading out of St. George and over towards Zion National Park. Along the way we came across a great overlook of the valley and got some great pictures, but it involved riding down a very bumpy, rocky dirt road. The pictures were worth it. We made it to Zion and saw some beautiful scenery, and the red rock cliffs were fantastic. There is also a really long tunnel through part of the park that was built in the 1930s into the face of the cliff that was interesting to drive through. From Zion we went on to Bryce Canyon, ... read more

We had a longer mileage day today, but still managed to see quite a bit, and still get in to the hotel early since a lot of our miles were on the highway. We left Ridgecrest this morning and caught another windy day across the northern Mojave Desert. After about 50 miles, we were on to Interstate 15 for the remainder of the day through California, Nevada, Arizona and in to Utah. The wind got really bad for a while to the point we were riding leaned over pretty well, but the worst part is that it was gusty, so at times we were almost blown right out of our lane. The wind was so strong that in Nevada we came across a pickup truck towing a travel trailer that had been blown over. It seemed ... read more

We had an ambitious day ahead of us today, planning on riding through Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park, and the Sequoia National Forest, and with a couple of delays along the way and the decision to cut the day short and head for the hotel, in the end we did it all anyway. It's been a long day, so here are the highlights and some photos, but I'm going to try and make this entry quick (it'll probably be long anyway). We took some great roads through California farmland again to get to Kings Canyon/Sequoia. Of course, this meant passing another farm stand with peaches, nectarines and apricots today. We stopped and chatted a bit, and picked up some fruit. It turns out the picking season for this fruit started yesterday, so it truly ... read more
