With the approach of April, it was time again for another vacation. We had more then our share of foreign destinations since coming to Iraq over 2 years ago, so we decided to head back to the U.S. and visit with family for a change. We both agreed it would be a nice to be able to read the signs in the airport and streets, so it was back to the west coast, plus a 4 day stop-over in New York City. After all, no reason we couldn’t squeeze in a mini-vacation during the visit. Since this was our 2 year anniversary of being in Iraq, we decided we had earned some serious luxury and flew first class all the way from Dubai to Portland, Oregon. I know that sounds crazy huh? Are we rock stars ... read more

Sorry it's been so long since I last wrote on this! I promise I haven't been lazy - it's just been impossible getting on a computer for anything other than Greyhound/hostel/hotel booking recently. We were reduced to using the local Holiday Inn last week to book stuff - we even managed to use their shuttle (yay my being so tight with money!) rather than forking out for a taxi. It doesn't look like we've been far since I last wrote (NY to Long Island!) but we have been to Washington DC and Chantilly, Virginia in between (and Maryland on an impromptu bus stop. There were no cookies). We only actually made it into DC today because of the ridiculous transportation costs otherwise. It was good though (and I'm getting arm muscles from all this backpack carrying. ... read more

I had a great time in NY! I stayed on the upper east side with Andrea. Her apartment is just great. Lisette and Rachel seem to be doing really well, too. They live in a quasi-train car place at 90th and 1st. We spent a good deal of time doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, which was just what I needed. We walked around to a bunch of the acting studios to distribute post cards for the acting studio for which Andrea works. She was sick for one of the days I was there, so we sat on our butts watching her Tivo and then went to Aces and Eights at 86th and hung out with Beth, Erin, Amber and Toni while Lisette was bartending. Isabelle, Toni's new dog, is really cute. The exhibit we saw at the ... read more

Wandering through the Big AppleLiz Toms I dig New York City. I feel like it's such a different city than any other, but for reasons I can't really put my finger on. Maybe I'll have to spend more time here to really know why I feel that way. My best guess right now is probably because of the sheer size of it. Everywhere you go, there is something. Tall buildings, people, shops, trash, street vendor here, street vendor there, landmark here, landmark there, apartments, delis, newspaper stands, hot dog stands, peanut stands, ethnic food stands, squares, gardens... all over and over again. I would imagine that you could spend a week here, doing nothing but tourist things in Manhattan alone, and still have so much more to see and do. Then you have the the other ... read more

New York, here I come!Liz Toms I feel like Kerouac in a way, and I love it. A month ago I was on the west coast in LA, and now here I am in a hotel on Wall Street in the Financial District of Manhattan. It's almost surreal, and definitely not good for my wanderlust (or maybe just what I need; a quick fix). An aside: just in case you don't know... I'm currently reading On The Road, and I have three things to say about that. 1) I feel like I'm living the book in a modern 2007 kind of way. I literally was driving from Baltimore to NYC today as I was reading how Kerouac drives to NYC via Baltimore with Dean, Ed, and Marylou in Part I. Plus, his trip to San Fran/LA ... read more

CC OD is way too wordy! I have enjoyed my time at home and believe my gear will work for me now. I had time to do a yoga class that made my muscles hurt in places that the hiking missed. I got to visit with my friends and catch up on our adventures to this point. I have been able to do a bit of work on my yard and flower beds I thought would go neglected this summer. Then lastly I am pumped up to get back to the trail and resume walking . Keep us in your prayers, I feel them everyday. ... read more

Well we have arrived in New York (well 2 days ago), the weather has been fantastic here. It was sunny all day. We have found most New Yorkers to be quiet friendly and humourous. Yesterday we started our 2 day hop on - hop off bus tours and saw lots of the key attractions, Madison Square gardens, Macys (MMMmm.... Shopping), Rockerfellar Centre and went for a trip up the Empire State Building. Oh and Daniel got to see his "Soup Kitchen" from Seinfield. Today we are going to see the Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero and what other attractions we come across, and will be finishing our last night in New York with a Broadway show tonight. We will be going to see either the Producers or Lion King - not sure yet. We sampled ... read more

OD Evaluating, improving, replacing and eliminating of gear has been completed. We have gone over every piece of gear we are carrying and feel we now have the proper things for returning to the trail. We have trimmed at least five pounds from our packs each and a minimum of one pound off our boots. A pound off our boots does not sound like much, but over the course of a hike like this the figures are staggering. The average person takes 2,100 paces to walk one mile. Drop one pound from your boots and this equates to eliminating ONE TON of work or more on your legs per mile. In a ten mile day (about our average right now) that is 10 tons not lifted, over the course of the trail you save 4,350,000 pounds ... read more
