What can I say...New York certainly does not dissapoint! New York was definitely our favourite city in the whole of the States! There are so many things to do, and every different part we saw is just so different - and that's without leaving Manhattan Island! We arrived at La Guardia airport and caught a bus to Harlem and had our first experience of the New York Subway into Chelsea where we were staying. The Subway is just great...so easy to use and you can go everywhere. And the whole time we were there, we only got on one train that was like a sardine can. The rest were just like catching a train in Melbourne. So we arrived in Chelsea and didn't think all that much of it, but once we got walking around ... read more

Hiiiiiii everyone! Seems we've barely had time to scratch ourselves or sleep - let alone hop on the internet!! So New York.....WOWWWWW. Some random thoughts: * The taxis relly are yellow * The school busses really are yellow too * The staff arent friendly at all - very unexpected. Dont get me wrong, the restuarant staff are great - waiters/waitresses - but everyone else we've encountered - bus drives, hotel staff, shop keepers etc just arent friendly at all * The stature of liberty isnt as big as you would expect * There's cute little squirrel things running around Battery Park * The loss of the twin towers is afr more devestating than just the lives lost, its is such a massive emptiness in the sky line where they onece stood * Times Square freaking ... read more

As I have now nearly come to the end of my adventure I thought I would try and just add more pics and less verbals so what have attempted to do is post a site where you can view the pictures I have taken on my last stop before I leave for the UK and view as you wish. Let’s hope it comes off. I have now been away for 6 months, yes hard to believe .it was an amazing experience, covered 60,000klms via air some 24 flights. 17,500 klms by car I have some wonderful memories and I have my blog with 5,000 photos to look back on in future years. I still find it difficult to accept it’s nearly over and I will be back in Tenerife shortly and back to reality. It ... read more

Awoke this morning to find it reasonably bright so decided to do the city tour north towards Harlem past Central Park. However within 1/2hour down came the rain fortunately only light rain. As we approached Harlem the rain stopped. interesting Harlem is the only area on Manhattan Island where the roads are not laid out in a grid system more like Europe all higgledy-de -piggledy we past a very impressive Roman Catholic Church (aren’t they always ) and onto the famous area where there are theatres where many of the great musicians started their careers. Then spotted some local bikers from there we viewed the Hotel Theresa where Castro stayed as a snub to the Yanks when he went to New York 40odd years ago for talks, they expected him to stay at the Waldorf ... read more

The last weekend I joined one more time a LSC activity to a famous American city. On the schedule was New York. Like to Chicago we spent our first time in the bus to New York and arrived at Saturday morning tired in Manhattan. After a breakfast we started our walking tour at time square. It's a very impressive place, but I expected a little bit more... But it's incredible that they don't have to rent the building on the south side of the square, because they can pay it only with advertisement! We continued our walking tour along the famous Broadway to the South-End of Central Park. Broadway is one of the only streets in NY which doesn’t go direct from North to South or East to West. We took a right turn, and arrived ... read more

Made it to New York. Left on Friday - my mom rode up with me, and we stopped in Hagerstown, MD to visit some family for the weekend. We reached the lovely town of Wappingers Falls, NY on Sunday afternoon (actually, the hotel is in Fishkill, NY - the office is about 15 minutes down the road in Wappingers Falls - both cities are very near Poughkeepsie, which is a little bigger). I'm interning with the company my dad works for (Laerdal Medical Corporation, a private Norwegian company), and we found out later that he has to be up here today and tomorrow for a meeting. So, he flew in yesterday, and my parents stayed down the hall in the same hotel. The hotel they put me up in for three weeks is really nice - ... read more

HISTORY The Two Sisters America probably could not have won its freedom from the British during the American Revolution without the help of the French. France provided arms, ships, money and men to the American colonies. Some Frenchmen - most notably the Marquis de Lafayette, a close friend of George Washington - even became high-ranking officers in the American army. It was an alliance of respect and friendship that the French would not forget. Almost 100 years later, in 1865, after the end of the American Civil War, several French intellectuals, who were opposed to the oppressive regime of Napoleon III, were at a small dinner party. They discussed their admiration for America's success in establishing a democratic government and abolishing slavery at the end of the civil war. The dinner was hosted by Edouard ... read more

On awaking I was to find the “Rainmaker” had cometh again it was coming down cats and dogs .I had geared up to go on the city tour south .I had to wait impatiently until the afternoon to make the adventure, at last it stopped raining but was still really cold .Picked up the bus outside the Empire State building and went down towards the Flat Iron building The Fuller Building better known as The Flat Iron Building was one of the tallest buildings in New York City upon its completion in 1902. The building, at 175 Fifth Avenue, sits on a triangular island block at 23rd Street, Fifth Avenue, and Broadway, facing Square. Then continued down 5th Avenue people watching. The tour bus guide really singing the praises of N.Y. with very heavy hints ... read more

My first impression of New York is that it never sleeps, you can get virtually anything at any time .i was staying at the Latham Hotel for 2 nights so I had to think also about further accommodation wasn’t prepared to stay any longer there as half the hotel was being occupied by single mothers with loads of rug rats ,I was paying $100 a night !I wanted more from the hotel. Decided to look further later in the day the only thing really in its favour was the location. Just off 5th Avenue. And round the corner was that Icon the Empire State Building The Empire State Building is a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in New York, NY. Its name is derived from the nickname for the state of New York. It stood as ... read more
