12Aug07 - Rhode Island - Experienced my first real seafood along the coastal waters at Mystic Bay. Spent two days at the Sheraton by the Providence Airport. It was right beside the airfield so I got to watch up close the planes takeoff and land. At one point there was a thunderstorm which grounded all the planes and left a line up of aircrafts. I felt sorry for the poor air traffic controllers as the weather cleared and the ensuing meyley of planes landing and taking off. Wandered into the city and visited Brown University where I picked up some souveniers including a George Bush countdown clock. August 7, 2007 With the blog back up and I think mostly accounted for here are some new pictures of last weeks class along with our field trip to the Blue Hills Observatory near Boston, and other pics around Boston. Today Molly & I signed up to be hair models! This meant we went to a fancy shmancy hair salon on Newbury and paid a pittance for them to practice on our hair. The style they were learning was the Bob, but a contemporary one not a classic one. So it is angled towards the front, Molly’s more than mine. Our trip into New England began on Tuesday the 31st July, about 2 days after we had planned. Our time in Canada had been so enjoyable that we had spent an additional couple of days in Ontario which limited our time in New England. After reading through the ever-trusty Lonely Planet Guide (we’ll never travel without one of these suckers) we picked out a path that would lead us through all six of the New England states. The main sites we had picked out were New Hampshire’s White Mountains National Park, Vermont’s covered Bridges, Yale in Connecticut, Rhode Island’s Mansions, and finally Martha’s Vineyard (from Fi - my pick, always wanted to go there) and Boston in Massachusetts. Saturday, August 4, 2007 I guess the time went by and I did not update this too regularly, now I leave in 5 days! So Molly and I went to camp and had an absolute blast. We headed to Elizabeth’s first and spent the night there with her and as always had a great visit. Thursday we drove to camp. Tod & Nancy were to meet us at 3:30 at the landing. We did our usual shopping and got to the landing and waited a bit. George Jr. was there too and they were putting new boat cleats on the docks. Alicia and her kids and grandkid were there swimming. On our way to Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, we stopped at Mystic Seaport and Newport, Rhode Island. Mystic has an old ship, a museum, an aquarium, and a "village" of shops to wander through. We spent some time wandering around and evjoying teh local scenery, which was fun. Then we went on to Newport, where we did some more walking around, had a fantastic dinner (where Paul tried a crab claw!), and then spent the next morning checking out some of the masions built there. The mansions were built at around the same time as the Biltmore (late 19th, early 20th century) as summer homes for the extremely wealthy. They were only lived in for about 6-8 weeks a year, by families with namkes like "Vanderbilt" and "Astor". A few of the mansions are gaudy ... read more
