We arrived! Great flights via Southwest Airlines - San Jose to Phoenix with a short layover - then onto Baltimore! Only problem was, when we were sitting on the plane in Phoenix, Nikki was watching the men load the luggage onto the plane out of her window...she then showed me the cart that held our luggage (identifiable by the nice gold ribbon we had attached to the handles) which were still sitting on the carts as the men closed the plane up - they were done loading. We waved goodbye to our suitcases (Tim never did believe us!) as we headed east. When we arrived in Baltimore, no surprise to us girls, there was no luggage for us to retrieve! We worked it out with Southwest (sparing you the details), earned a new suitcase, surrendering the ... read more

Just realize where you come from: this is the essence of wisdom. -The Tao Te Ching Every year, Rotary International Clubs around the world hold conferences to welcome back their young countrymen who have just experienced a year abroad living and studying in various foreign countries. Six years ago, during one such conference held in the US, there was a private meeting held with the students who had just returned from the Asian countries of India, Thailand and Indonesia. In this meeting the students found themselves face to face with a social worker and psychiatrist there to talk to them about culture shock. “We’d like to take you back for a minute to the beginning of your exchange,” the two began. “Please for a moment remember how difficult your first few months in these countries were. ... read more

Cruising the East Coast - 2009 We really enjoyed our month long stay at Brunswick Landing Marina. This was our longest marina stay since leaving Kemah, Texas back in October of 2007. The facility at Brunswick Landing was first class. All wide concrete floating docks, with a nearly new shore-side bathhouse, laundry and cruiser lounge in close proximity. Best of all the laundry was free. They also had free wifi and cable TV at every slip. We cashed in enough American Express membership rewards points to pay for a rental car for the month we spent in Georgia. This allowed us to explore the nearby islands of St. Simon and Jekyll as well as the historic town of Brunswick. Also, we now had transportation to Atlanta and back to help set up the wedding of our ... read more

During the season, I visited five MLB stadiums for the first time - US Cellular Field, Nationals Park, Citi Field, new Yankee Stadium, and Camden Yards. I traveled to Baltimore for the a Braves-Orioles game on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. After a late evening out with friends, I didn't feel up to driving so I bought a same-day Amtrak ticket to/from Baltimore Penn Station. Upon arrival in Baltimore, I transferred to the light rail ($1.60 one-way fare) for the 20-minute ride to the ballpark. Outside Camden Yards, you can find decent crowds at street vendors and food carts hawking burgers, peanuts, and beverages for very reasonable prices and/or purchase food to bring inside the stadium - quite a change of scenery for one accustomed to attending Yankees games. You can also pack your own lunches and ... read more

Monday, June 8 On the road again...and happy birthday, Steve! Tennessee is one long state east to west and I began to wonder if we'd ever get out of it. As we passed exit signs on the freeway to many small cities throughout Tennessee, Steve began to reminisce about his travel in the early 1970's when he worked for Seligman & Latz in New York. His job at S & L was to visit the various beauty salons the company ran in department stores throughout the country and he, being the low man on the totem pole, got some very interesting routes to travel throughout the south - Rome, Georgia where he got to go waterskiing in a bayou with alligators and Ashland, Kentucky and the $7 a night motel room. He dredged up names out ... read more

Located a short distance from each other, the Maritime Museum in Baltimore's Inner Harbor and the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad Museum make for a fantastic day-trip into Baltimore. With family in town, we ventured north for the day, first visiting the B&O Railroad Museum, which is the birthplace of American Railroading and a massive museum of over 40 acres with nearly 200 trains on display. Then we headed over to Baltimore's Inner Harbor to explore the Maritime Museum, which really means we boarded and explored three ships and a submarine berthed at the Inner Harbor. First there was the USS Constellation, the last all-sail warship built by the US Navy, then the Lightship Chesapeake, which served in the US Lighthouse Service, the USCGC (U.S. Coast Guard Cutter) Taney, the last surviving warship still afloat from ... read more

We spent today, Friday the 13th, exploring the Baltimore Museum of Art during the grown-up version of a field trip with people from Seth’s work. A couple of art students had volunteered to give us a tour of the museum and discuss some of the pieces on display, but the formal tour soon dissipated into occasional casual conversations, mostly due to people like me who become easily distracted and wander off. I wandered from painting to painting and sculpture to sculpture, photographing whatever caught my interest. There were numerous intriguing items exhibited, and though I enjoyed the more traditional landscape paintings the most, the strange concoctions in the Contemporary Art section inspired the most critical discussions. And I spent a great deal of time touching and floating through and swimming about in the blue and silver ... read more

Mistakes can really help a person have a good time. While Bill was still in Prague during December, I had a sudden impulse to give a more generous than normal donation to our local PBS television program. The donation had a real bonus attached. Along with an annual membership I got two tickets to a live performance at the Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore, Maryland of the group “Celtic Women”. Bill’s sister introduced us about 3 years ago to the TV broadcasts of the concerts by these lovely young woman and the musicians who accompany them. They are not our ‘favorite’ singing group but they are quite good and we always enjoy their PBS performances. I thought it would be a good late Christmas gift for both of us since we were not spending Christmas together in ... read more
