We enjoyed our short visit to Portsmouth, VA and the convenience of staying at a marina. Sunday morning we took a long walk through the narrow tree lined streets of historic Portsmouth. Many of the homes date to the late 1700’s and early 1800’s and most have been restored to their early style. Unfortunately, our crew for this trip, Nancy’s brother-in-law, John, had a few delays getting down from Baltimore. When does Amtrak run on time? So our departure from Norfolk was not until early afternoon on June 1st. We had a light breeze and finally there was enough room to sail, so we proceeded to tack out of the busy commercial harbor. This meant heading for the swallows outside the main shipping channel whenever a container ship or a large naval vessel approached. By about ... read more

Got up nice and early this morning and have had a bit of walk round the harbour, went up Baltimores own World Trade Centre, walked up federation hill, climbed up the Washington monument, saw a street performer. Now ur all probably thinkin "that sounds nice" well it was. Only trouble is i think we have done everything Baltimore has 2 offer! And well we have another day here and i aint 2 sure what were gonna do 2morrow. Laundry i think would be sensible... not fun though. Probs go 4 another walk, not in the opposite direction as according 2 my guide its a "no-go area"!! Lookin 4ward 2 gettin 2 washington ... read more

Hello Everybody!! Sorry about such the delay of blog entries!! We have just been so busy that making it to the computer lab has been quite the obstacle!! Sooooo, we have been a little more active since the last entry I wrote! We have spent a few afternoons in Philadelphia working on the landscaping of an old Historical Mansion. We've had the chance to visit the historical downtown were we observed the LOVE park, the Rocky Steps, (Art Museum), and the Liberty Bell. It was a great time, but we definitely reserved a portion of our day to chow down some Cheesesteaks!! And yes they were very delicious!! Our initial visit to the site was on the 7th of February, but we actually decided we wanted to return to do more service, so on Saturday morning, ... read more

Hey all!!! So I made it to Perry Point!! It was a long and tedious trip! My flight from Cedar Rapids was delayed, causing me to miss my flight in Chicago, then causing me to spend 12 hours waiting for the next flight which was delayed multiple times! But I got to meet some great people from Iowa and Minnesota who were all headed to the same place as me! So due to my delay, I missed the first day of "In-Processing," but I soon caught up and have met some fabulous people. We have been working on ice breakers, team bonding and leadership activities, physicals, etc., etc. That sounds boring, but I'll put up some pics that will hopefully spark your interest!! But before we get that far, I have a great story for ... read more

I received an email on Christmas Eve letting me know that I have been accepted to volunteer at one of the orphanage schools Mother Teresa founded through her organization, Missionaries of Charity. I can't believe it!! I'll be able to work from 8 am - Noon with the kids!! I am so amazed and grateful that a chance such as this has been presented, and I about fell out of my chair (literally :) when I got the news! I absolutely can't wait to see what a "day in the life" working there will be like and how I'll be able to help... There has also been another opportunity presented by my Nepali language instructor - whom I met a few months back here in the D.C. area - to teach and volunteer at the Kanya ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We left our State Park camping site in the morning with little fanfare. The camping had been more or less sardine style, which we were less than thrilled about, but at least we had been able to camp, and no one stepped on us during the night, so one of our bigger concerns was thus avoided. Our big plan for the day was Gettysburg. If you haven't been there before, and are interested in such things, be forewarned that Gettysburg is a full day. If you get bored with such things, you can certainly get through it faster, but we got there just after 8:00 AM and didn't leave until 5:00 PM. We could have spent more time there, but it was dark. Construction is well underway for the new visitors center at Gettysburg, ... read more

Nov 8. Baltimore, MD to Salomon I, MD We left Henderson Warf Municipal marina in Baltimore, MD at 0700 right after sunrise. We wanted to get to Norfolk, VA before the next low pressure system gets to the area next Saturday. Once in Norfolk, VA we can continue our journey protected from the weather by the ICW. At 0725 we were going under “Francis Scott Key Bridge” heading 151˚. An hour later we passed by the actual “Seven Foot Knoll” that replaced the original that was moved to Baltimore’s Waterfront. At 0859 we went by “Baltimore”. And at 0922 by “Sandy Pt” right before getting to “William P Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge”. At 1010 we went by “Thomas Pt Shoal”. Nothing interesting really happened besides the fact that a tug pushing a barge of dirt run ... read more
