My husband and I just moved back to Florida, but we lived in Maryland from June 2008 until October 2009, and we lived in Heidelberg, Germany from June 2005 until June 2008. I created this TravelBlog to share our experiences and pictures with our family and friends. We love to travel, so I hope that shows! :) I also love photographing new and beautiful places, so I hope you enjoy both the blogs and the photos!
This photo of us was taken in Nuremberg, Germany in early 2004.
The blogs begin with the Spring of 2006. Don't forget to check out some of my favorite photos from our past travels in the Gallery!
I haven’t been to the Florida Aquarium since soon after it first opened back in 1995, but as far as I can tell, it hasn’t changed much. It’s still nestled along the banks of the Ybor Channel near the Tampa Port Authority off Channelside Drive in downtown Tampa, and it still has two main exhibits: the Wetlands, housed within a giant, curved-glass atrium visible from the street and the water, and the Coral Reef, which twists through an underground-like tunnel of glass and faux stone. I’m more of a zoo-person myself, so I don’t visit too many aquariums and, thus, don’t have much to which I can compare Tampa’s attraction. But the Florida Aquarium has many fans to support it; for example, it’s been voted in the top 5 “Kid-Friendly Aquariums” by Parent’s Magazine and was

We hadn’t had a chance to visit since we’ve moved back to Florida, but the seasonal arrival of the reindeer seemed like the perfect excuse to spend the evening at the zoo. We met up with a friend and her 3-year-old son at 6 p.m. when they opened the gates for the after-dark Wild Wonderland event. The park was deluged with crowds of people pushing carriages and being trailed by young, excited children, and it really is the type of event no parent should miss. Parents Magazine has rated Lowry Park Zoo as #1 in their list of “10 Best Zoos for Kids” across the country, and there’s no surprise as to why when you see all that they offer for this special

Sure, there are beaches and bodies of water in those places, too - but nothing’s like Florida. Nothing’s like the calm, gray-blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico that lazily crash into the soft, white beaches, and the quaint specialty shops and rustic restaurants that line the shores, bathed in a warm sun and soothing breezes. Our recent return to Florida helped us to realize that spending the day at an old beach haunt of ours was the perfect way to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Our anniversary may be in December and only two weeks before Christmas, but it was a beautiful, blue day with clear skies and

Perhaps the cold breezes and gray clouds and the bundled coat to keep out the 40-degree chill were an appropriate setting for a viewing of a battlefield carrying the memory of so much death. I’m not trying to sound cynical, but I just don’t consider Gettysburg to be a very cheerful place. It’s an interesting place to visit and included a beautiful drive through part of the Pennsylvania countryside, so it made a great day-trip for us. Once we arrived, we started out with a free, 90-minute walking tour around the battlefield, guided by a friendly employee of the National Parks Service. I was freezing, and my hips didn’t appreciate

As we now know we won't be living in this area for much longer, my husband and I took a day off from packing and moving preparations to explore a few places in Washington, DC that we had yet to visit, such as the National Archives. We did take a quick stroll through the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, which is across the street from the Archives, so that we could enjoy the outdoor exhibit while the sun was shining, though the weather never did get wet again. Then we excitedly passed through the basement entry into the exhibit area

With family in town, we ventured north for the day, first visiting the B&O Railroad Museum, which is the birthplace of American Railroading and a massive museum of over 40 acres with nearly 200 trains on display. Then we headed over to Baltimore's Inner Harbor to explore the Maritime Museum, which really means we boarded and explored three ships and a submarine berthed at the Inner Harbor. First there was the USS Constellation, the last all-sail warship built by the US Navy, then the Lightship Chesapeake, which served in the US Lighthouse Service, the USCGC (U.S. Coast Guard Cutter) Taney, the last surviving warship still afloat from

The annual Cherry Blossom Festivals began in 1935 and we received a second batch of trees 1965. The trees are located along the Potomac River and around the Tidal Basin and so are in easy walking distance from D.C.'s monuments. They only bloom for about two weeks every year and it's impossible to estimate the exact time of perfect viewing. The best estimates for Peak Bloom come about ten days before it happens, so it can be tough to plan a trip to D.C. months in advance and ensure that you'll be in town for the Peak Bloom Date. We drove into D.C. on Palm Sunday and wandered through the national monuments and beneath the cherry

A couple of art students had volunteered to give us a tour of the museum and discuss some of the pieces on display, but the formal tour soon dissipated into occasional casual conversations, mostly due to people like me who become easily distracted and wander off. I wandered from painting to painting and sculpture to sculpture, photographing whatever caught my interest. There were numerous intriguing items exhibited, and though I enjoyed the more traditional landscape paintings the most, the strange concoctions in the Contemporary Art section inspired the most critical discussions. And I spent a great deal of time touching and floating through and swimming about in the blue and silver

Sandy Cove is a resort in the tiny town of North East, Maryland and lazily stretches along the coast of the Chesapeake Bay. The sprawling brick and white-siding resort is bordered by the water on one side and buried within miles of forest on the others, like a little world onto itself. We attend the Couple’s Weekend Getaway which includes a Couple’s Conference led by an energetic and entertaining husband and wife team. In between the conference sessions, meals, and a Saturday night concert we wander the expansive grounds, strolling along the shore of the bay or just sitting and enjoying the view. The property includes campgrounds and nature trails but we stick close to the water. We did

And if you’ve ever been to Florida and trekked through the many wild forests or walked a wooden pathway over swampland or taken a boat through the Everglades, you’re likely to have noticed a threatening bane of the tropics: bugs. Big bugs, bugs that bite, bugs that jump, bugs that you can’t even see. I hate bugs. And so as we are exploring Historic Jamestowne, far away from the tropics, we encounter - ick! - more bugs. Just outside the Memorial Church, brazenly perched upon the top of a stone wall is this horribly huge… bug. I think, from later research, that it is a leaf-footed bug, which fits into the category of True Bug - really: True Bug. It should be Huge and Scary Bug. So
