So I'm getting so excited about this entire experience. I'm 33 days and counting until I travel to Edinburgh, United Kingdom for my study abroad experience!!! I'll be attending Napier University, where I will be hopefully studying Animal Behavior, Whale and Dolphin Biology, Scottish Culture and Society, and Hillwalking. It’s going to be a major adjustment, emotionally and physically. I’m really going to be on my own for once. Hopefully I will also find a veterinarian to work for, or at least to shadow. Look out for pictures of sheep!!! If you want to email me (which I will really really want once I'm there), I'll continue having my bellarmine email: bmurphy01@bellarmine.edu. Well have a Merry Christmas everyone!!! ~Brian ... read more

11/18/2006 8:58 AM I-65 north of Louisville. When we pulled in to the club last night we noticed the night was billed as a “Metal” night which neither of these bands are. Although, people that listen to metal seem to like us despite our lack of heavy guitar chugging and cookie monster sounding vocals. Apparently the promoter originally had a different venue that had been used by the local goth/industrial scene for quite some time but they lost their space. The show was moved to a different venue. We kept hearing from the locals that they had never actually been in this place and dressed down a bit so as not to have problems with the bars regulars. We met the opening band, set up our gear, and stood around for about 20 minutes waiting for ... read more

It was on a business trip to Louisville- a few of us ditched the proceedings to do some sightseeing. Rented a car, and started out through the ‘bluegrass’. Went to a civil war site where they were having some re-enactment, that was interesting, especially all the little food booths that were there. Then someone mentioned the ‘snake handling churches’, why don’t we try to find one? So we started asking around, and were told there were none in the area, but we would have to go to Eastern Kentucky. So away we went. After a few more inquiries, we found ourselves in a little town near Hazard. Someone told us where a church was that did it. We found it, and according to the sign, they were having church that night!!! We were in luck! So ... read more

From Chattanooga we drove west across Tennessee to Nashville and turned north to go to Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. We parked in a Jellystone RV Park in Cave City, nice campground but was not busy and we only spent two nights. Toured the Mammoth Cave National Park and met up with one of Judy's high school class mate Sue Banks and her husband Tom who live in Louisville, KY. They took us to their cabin on a lake, really a beautiful place. We sat on the back porch and just took in the beauty of the lake and surroundings. This country seems to have just one place after another that one has to see and experience. Later we all went to a restaurant and then we were treated to a dinner. After leaving Mammoth Cave area we ... read more

I should be in West Virginia within a couple days. Kentucky is big when you have to snake through it the way I've been. At least I'm out of Louisville I suppose. Today I'm back in Lexington at one of my preferred Starbucks locations. I was in the vicinity of the city so I decided to drink some real coffee for a change. The coffee out here is terrible. Like the instant coffee in your office that someone left in the back of the cabinet by the water cooler. Wretched. Southern California spoiled me with an abundance of that triumphant bean, so I can't really blame this region for its lacks. I've found that what makes me happy out here is not necessarily getting a lot done in a day. Its when I'm able to chat ... read more

We left Mammoth cave park and headed East. We noticed the rocks on the side of the highway are sedimentary and very flat. I was building a big pond at my home during that time, and I would pay a fortune to buy big flat rocks like that at the garden center! Turns out that ages ago, that region was part of a sea so it makes sense. When I was bored of the highway, I took some country roads. At some places, you have big ranches with white fences and horses, a classic! We then arrived in Daniel Boone national forest. Daniel Boone was a pioneer of the 18th century that helped to develop this part of the USA. The park itself is interesting: lots of caves, arches, tower rock formations. One small road goes ... read more

There's a somber mood all over the city. From what I've overheard, it seems everyone here knew someone on the plane that crashed yesterday. It's been raining all over Ketucky for the past few days. Today I took my first full day off from field work since I arrived in the state. I haven't had a chance to see much of Lexington yet, but soon I'll have covered every street. I'm glad to finally be away from Louisville. My laptop failed halfway through the job. Between being sick and not having a working computer, it took me twice as long to finish the job in Louisville as it should have. Todays pictures are from the last few days in the big city and its hinterland. ... read more
