Day 1: New Brunswick, NJ -- Frankfort, KY (730 miles) So we have finally departed!! Today was quite a day... about 11 hours on the road. We have, thus far, followed the suggested route from AAA, leaving us in Frankfort, KY....about 30 miles west of Louisville. Here is a quick summary of the day's sights and sounds before I crash: New Jersey- We passed about 36 Dunkin Donuts as well as 80 road-kill deer on the way out of the good ol' garden state. We drove SW through PA, stopping at Cabelas "The World's Foremost Outfitters" for hunting and outdoor pursuits. This place was crazy!! 250,000 sq. ft. Full of taxidermied animals and even a waterfall!! (I bought a can of isopropane butan for the stove). You could buy everything in camouflage-- i think they even ... read more

The subject line, for those Aussies out there, is the name of the song sung at the Kentucky Derby and is certainly not a reflection of the age of the lovely house of Barbara and George Beury in which I am staying! This may become a theme of my 6 months but I love this place! George and Barbara, in particular, have been exceptional hosts and the many people I have met from both Louisville and out of town (Florida, Ohio, New England) have made my stay here something to cherish for a long time. An unexpected highlight of these 4+ days was meeting Muhammad Ali at the Muhammad Ali Centre in downtown Louisville. What I should say is that I had my photo taken with him. Unfortunately, he is in a poor state of health ... read more

April 1 Departure from Spring Creek, our Kentucky place, was unhurried and stress free. I decided to put both cats in the PT Cruiser, rather than one in each car. Our Alaska caravan consists of the five year old PT, a three year old Toyota Prius hybrid, and a Cessna 150. My son Scott and Maria, my adventure travel partner, have been very cooperative in trying to control the weight loaded into the trailer and the cars. Still, I am concerned about the PT Cruiser’s ability to handle a fully loaded trailer for 5,000 miles, including the Rocky Mountains and the Alaska Highway. Despite our weight control efforts, 7 months worth of gear for three people and two cats is a lot of stuff. Today was my first ever drive through western Kentucky. So far, the ... read more

Last day of March, 2006. Maria and I completed our preparation on March 27 for departure from Orlando about 3 hours ahead of schedule. Arrived in Spring Creek (Albany) Kentucky on schedule. 715 miles, thankfully without incident in the PT and Prius. Planned to pass through Atlanta around 11 a.m. to minimize the traffic hassle. It was only bad, not horrible. We now have the trailer loaded, kayak aboard, and the Cessna readied. So, weather permitting, it is off on the main journey from Spring Creek to Anchorage tomorrow morning. Itinerary is here to Boise in 7 days, then a few days visit with family. Maps and photos on next entry. Dave... read more

Well finally we are back, i was getting sick of driving. Today we just relaxed, Steve and I were both tired... so we played with the kids and then did some killing on the Battlefield. The kids broke the rail on the stairs over the weekend, so i fixed that. They loved me even more after that. On Tuesday Steve had to work so Melissa was home and we spent the day doing some work around the house and I taught his Pierce how to ride a 2 Wheeler bike. It was great! We went out to Buffilo Wild Wings at had the hottest wings i have ever tested in my life. My eyes couldnt stop watering. On Wednesday Steve and I cemented his sons Basketball ring out the front of the house and went in ... read more

Date: 7/01/05 Location: Jackson, KY Living this past week didn’t seem so bad, but looking back it seems a miracle we survived it: -At auditions we had 23 kids show up. Our show usually has 60. Ricki-Ticki-Tavi story is cut, as are a few characters and groups are made smaller (Monkeys, Wolves and Snakes) -The number of kids continued to dwindle as the week went by. For some reason everyone had a dentist appointment this week. And I mean everyone. By Wednesday four of our monkeys had decided that they didn’t want to be in the show (which I attempted not to take personally) which left us with 7 monkeys (usually we have 18) one of which would not be back until dress rehearsal on Friday. -Buck (the Buck)’s father got into a car accident midway ... read more

Alot of the food is similar except like bread and milk they both have alot of sugar in them and they taste like shit. you have to get this 2% stuff which is about as normal as you will get. They have these self checkouts which u just do yourself and its not to bad if u only have one or 2 items but Steve and I must have pissed everyone off because we ... read more

Hello Everyone, Well over 2 Continents, 5 States and 5 Airports i finally made it, and man what a DAY! I started of at adelaide airport at 6am Monday, i flew virgin to Melborune where i boarded United Airlines and flew to Sydney. I waited in Sydney for 2 hours and then boarded United Airlines again and we set off to LAX (Los Angeles Airport) I got a nice little 85 year old lady next to me named Wanda and she only had one hearing aid (she lost one at the airport) and with the damn noise of the plane and that weird air blowing noise, i couldnt really hear anything she said. She was nice though. They put me in Economy Plus (it was suppose to have more room, but that still had jack shit ... read more

Location: Jackson, KY Date: June 28th, 2005 I’m not sure if I’m adjusting quickly to this new life style of packing up and driving somewhere new every week, or if by leaving towns I’m leaving everything behind and my mind has yet to catch up and realize how crazy what I’m doing is. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting my reaction to be, but it was definitely along the lines of weirdness and freaking out. But it still hasn’t completely hit me yet, or maybe I just adapt easily to new situations- who knows. The shows went well last week (in Cory, PA) I screwed up a few lines and songs but oh well. I also sweated up a river on stage what with the lack of AC and me in my huge bear ... read more
