The weather became very nice, and gave the city a completely different vibe. Now that it feels like January again (not fair), I decided to post these photos in memory of the good weather. [View Full Entry]

Late afternoon in Soho

I have photos of the surrounding area on here already, but I thought I'd show what it looks like in the immediate vicinity of my flat (1-block radius). If you've ever been to London and seen a typical residential neighbourhood, you'll understand why I'm happy to live here. Much of London is absolutely filthy, and pretty ugly when it comes to housing. I am grateful to LSE's endowment for buying a pice of this area and letting me stay about. Here it is on a sunny April morning at 6am. Still only feels like spring for a few hours before it [View Full Entry]

Ah, Great Britain. Free health care, affordable housing, cheap groceries, and easy transport- sounds great? Don't make love in the street just yet... I feel like discussing this because I have been required to understand housing policy in Britain, among other things, as part of my programme. When I arrived in this country I was a left-leaning moderate. Now I am calling that into question. I wouldn't have guessed that would happen, but it is nonetheless a direct result of the ultra-liberalness of the LSE student body (and curriculum to some degree). Now, being a radical myself in some sense, this [View Full Entry]

Looking out toward the barbary coast
Tarifa is the southernmost point of the continent (the straight of Gibraltar is slightly north). Here, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, the winds are fierce and constant. This cannot be overstated: the sand on the beach will blow into your face and stay there from the impact. The water is not too cold, however, and the winds attract a younger, adventurous element to this premier windsurfing location. I rolled up my pants and walked through a cove behind a military base at the edge of the peninsula. We stopped at a some sort of hippie cafe after playing in the [View Full Entry]

Gibraltar

 Europe » Gibraltar » Gibraltar
By 6am we were hurtling down the coast in a rented BMW at 160km per hour, hoping to make it to the edge of Europe in time to see the sunrise. We made it. I was impressed by the city, though we didn't have time to explore the rock itself. You have to cross the runway of the city's airport to get in. It felt very strange walking across such taboo pedestrian space, but all cars and people have to cross, stopping and going in time with landing planes. As you may know, Gibraltar is part of the UK, so I [View Full Entry]

Ronda

 Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Ronda
Drove up into the mountains for the day. This town supposedly represents a more traditional Andalucian way of life. We tried to eat at a Tapas bar that is rated among the best in the country for such- but eveything in the village closed at 4, so we were forced to eat at McDonalds. A shame... [View Full Entry]
