I played Chauffer and Tour Guide the first week of April on the Island of Oahu as my parents and I enjoyed a week in paradise. We stayed in a lovely B&B in Kaneohe Bay overlooking the water. The view from the deck was spectacular and often my parents would look out over the water and see something large and round swimming around in the bay. We guessed it was probably a turtle; sea turtles are abundant on Oahu. Two full days and another half day were spent at Pearl Harbor visiting the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Bowfin and the USS Missouri. My dad and I are both quite fond of history and especially WWII, so we didn't really want to miss anything by rushing our visit. At the USS Arizona Memorial, visitors are asked ... read more

Leslie has a week of holidays for Spring Break...which means a week to head somewhere for three of us. Won't mind it with all the stress of the past few weeks. So here we are in Shanghai, ready for our Japan Airline flights...first to Tokyo than on to Honolulu where we arrive the morning of the 21st....even before we left Shanghai. The last few months and years, when people asked me if I've been there or there...they always end up asking me if I've been to Hawaii...and the answer was always no. But Ma'ri gave me a very good excuse to say yes this time. This will come later. So we spent few miles to get us 3 tickets to Honolulu...I know, it's the crisis... Waikiki...not my dream, but as we were landing in Honolulu, ... read more

Geo: 21.3069, -157.858Thursday 19/03/09 Honolulu - Hawaiian Islands Temps Air 27°C Sea 29°C Arrived to a hazy start and a slow and very careful approach into the harbour, it's certainly the narrowest of entrances and the tightest we've encountered, with very little room for manoeuvring or error. The berth by the road side with the ship literally facing on to the road, you can go to the foreword observation deck and look into the cars as they travel just below and some couple of hundred metres in front of you. We had the inevitable problems and delays caused by having to negotiate American Immigration. I'm sure the whole process must have a detrimental impact on visitor numbers, for myself after my last couple of experiences I'd never planned to visit the states again, and had serious ... read more

============================================================================ My friend Marion came to visit me for about 2 weeks this month. Apart from hiking, going out to eat, and watching countless hours of "LOST" we took some photos at the beach, too. Enjoy!... read more

Hanauma Bay is beautiful. And pristine. And really paradise within a paradise. We got to snorkel in the beautiful nature preserve and work on our suntans. It was really fun. Won't say much more, I think the pictures speak for themselves... ... read more

It's been a busy few days in O'ahu. Even though everything in Hawai'i is relaxed (why hurry in the sun?!), I've been keeping things at a high intensity level with work. Luckily, I've still been able to get in a lot of fun time (definitely perk of working in the leisure industry). Past few days' highlights include: catamaran cruise on the Na Hoku II, surf lesson in Waikiki, fish tacos at Duke's Canoe Club, and Pearl Harbor (in the rain). ... read more

Aloha from Hawai'i! I'm here on the island of O'ahu, actually on business. I've been here for a few days now, but today is the first time I've been able to actually slow down a bit and take in some of the sights. Since I graduated from the University of Illinois I have been working for a travel agency that specializes in tours for foreign exchange high school students studying in the United States. It's business, but what better place to do business than in Hawai'i... especially if you're from Chicago! I'm having a hard time believing I'm still in America though. Europe seemed more familiar, despite the fact that I didn't need to exchange money and there's only a slight accent here in the Islands. Riding around in our rented van on the highway is ... read more

We started the last day of Elderhostel thinking we would wear the leis we got at the Polynesian Center. Then we decided to fiddle with the ones we made the night before to wear to breakfast. We took the latter option. We left them for the cleaning staff because they looked pretty good. Breakfast went quickly. Several took pictures of each table. Up to this point our blessed/cursed camera did a lot of things but it did not do small groups inside very well. We'd tried. Susan had done very well keeping all the administration and logistics straight. She had been so intent upon sharing the spectacular and vivid of Hawai'i that she never really gave us a test to see if any of it had sunk in! But we all knew "Aloha" and "Mahalo." This entry is primarily for the Martin/Doolittle grandchildren and Sarah Merriwether. Today is the first day since we left Los Angeles that you can stick a pin in your world map to show our actual location---a little speck of land in the Pacific Ocean. The next place for a pin will be Samoa, another tiny speck which is 5 days away. Honolulu is the site of Pearl Harbor. Your parents can tell you a lot more about Pearl Harbor, but it was where the Japanese navy attacked the anchored US naval fleet on the morning of December 7th, 1941. (Google) It was the beginning of World War II for the United States. I was only 11 years old then and Granny Lynne was 4!!! However, I remember it like it happened yesterday because I was listening ... read more

Our last full day together was largely a chance to see the north shore of Oahu. We had our camera out ready to take a picture of Diamond Head. We were going to drive right past it along the coast. Before we knew it, it was behind us and indistinguishable from the other segments of rock wall that now stood between us and Honolulu. It is hard to believe that we missed it again. We got to see some of the best beaches in Hawai'i. It surprised us that they were not stacked body upon body. But that kind of overload was wreaking havoc on the beach and coral so the state was restricting access by charging a fee and limiting the number of people who could go down to those beaches. The state also closed ... read more
