I'm stuck, I'm stuck, I'm stuck in Florida!! And I'm already trying to plan a European summer. Right now, (and my plans change all the time) I want to be in England for a majority of my summer. Spending most of my time in Reading, with visits to friends in London and Cambridge (Bedford really). But my logic is, why would I spend so much money on an international flight and not take advantage of cheap inter-European travel? I'm already looking at Ryanair and have found £2 tickets for Krakow, Oslo, and Stockholm and £30 tickets to Berlin, Grenada, Pisa, and Madrid. My logic for having only travelled to France 3 times (rather than going to another country; Scotland and Wales don't really count) was because I know some French, at least enough to get by. ... read more

Day 167 (Saturday 03/10/09, NJJ) Processed type food stuffs for breakfast accompanied by butter and jam from squeezy bottles - only in America! We hate food from squeezy bottles, especially the fake cheese shit! Back on the road and we travelled from Mississippi, into Alabama around 12.30pm and then into Florida around 2pm. We stopped at a visitors centre and had a lush drink of OJ. We drove to the Gulf Islands National Seashore area and were at Perdido Key by 3pm. We parked the car at Johnson beach and walked along the sand. The weather was so hot and sunny that we had to change into our swimwear and head into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. We were very much in the honeymoon mood. In the evening we arrived in Tallahassee, stopped ... read more

How depressing to have to do through my little location list and select USA instead of all those other exotic choices. Ok, so the UK is hardly considered exotic, but many people here like to think so. Speaking of exotic I always thought I could deal well with that type of environment. Maybe not for a long period of time, but at least for a little while. My idea was to study hollistic medicine and change the world like Angelina Jolie. (mom doesn't think I can do it!) But I'll find away, even if it means having to stay at disneyland resorts alongside Samantha Brown first! Speaking of the travel channel.. did you know that through FSU's international programs you can do an internship with them in London? Yeah, I don't think I can pass that ... read more

Deciding that I don't want to go all the way from New Orleans to Port Charlotte in one go (Greyhound isn't that great after all) I decide to go to Tallahassee, Floridas capital. Yet, this time I don't travel alone: Anna comes along for the ride. As she likes to book hotels in advance, we don't have to worry about where to sleep when we arrive at 4 in the morning, which, I have to admit, isn't the worst thing. Also, you read correctly, we booked a HOTEL. The first (and probably last) hotel on the journey - privacy, queen sized bed, our own shower. Of course there are some minor troubles as we booked online and only paid 15 euros, but who would have expected anything else. Tallahassee itself is not the most exciting town ... read more

I-75 heading north was the usual....just a busy non scenic interstate but it served the purpose to get us heading north. At Ocala we turned on to US 27. I'd not remembered how hilly Florida can be. It was a gorgeous drive on a 4 lane highway with miles of rolling hills, horse farms and huge live oaks covered with Spanish moss. Some of the horse farms were amazing, complete with luxurious barns which could have housed up to about twenty horses. We had intended to take Alternate 27 most of the way but made a wrong turn (and this is just the start of the trip) and ended up traveling along the regular route 27 instead . All was not lost (no pun intended). It turned out to be a lovely peaceful drive through many ... read more

Temp: 34°C Another early start, up at 6:30am for brekkie and bags to coach by 7:30. We had a whole day of driving ahead of us before we reached Orlando. We stopped a couple of times at a some rest stops, the main one was at Tallahassee, Florida for lunch. Tallahassee is the state capital of Florida. We were on our way an hour later, Christina had put Apollo 13 on for us to keep us entertained as we are heading to the Kennedy Space Center in a few days. The trip was so long that we got time to watch Pirates of the Caribbean aswell (a Disney movie in honour of people heading to DisneyWorld tomorrow. It took about an hour longer to get to Orlando then planned as along the way we got stuck ... read more

Today's drive was much more enjoyable for the pilot. We left I-95 after an hour and have been taking state highways through Georgia and Florida that provide interesting scenery and velocity changes to keep Vincenzo from falling into a monotonous drone. The intermittent downpours also spice things up a bit. The navigator's day is nearly fulfilled at having spotted a wild boar grazing in the “soft-shoulder”, an armadillo whose vital signs were questionable, a fox the size of a gazelle fleeting across the road, and many flocks of white herons. I still want a 'gator but I can wait till Friday when my AAA book PROMISES me a gator sighting. We were warned against swimming in the swampy water at the Florida Caverns State Park campsite because of the gators, but I was dubious of their ... read more

Hello, a little travel update. I was very busy with the Master Gardener Program the first half of his year, so not too much traveling for Tim and I. However, we did go to Florida for Ken's graduation the first part of May. I have posted a few photos from a day trip to Wakulla Springs, south of Tallahassee. I know most people go to the beach when they visit Florida (and Florida has some very nice beaches). I think if you really want to see the REAL Florida then you must experience one of the many natural springs. The cypress tree and the wild life are beautiful.... well see for yourself!... read more

I got to sleep in today. That was nice. Then we did lunch and Dana, Sarah and I went to see the movie Taken. It was pretty good. Afterwards, we hung out at the book store and read a bit to kill some time- that’s what we do, just hang out in book stores and not buy things. Kyle came to get us and took us to dinner. The church that’s hosting the kids had a sort of pizza picnic for the kids and the host families, so we went and joined them at the park. We had lots of fun. I took lots of pictures, and since a picture is supposedly worth 1037 words (inflation), I’ll leave you with several rather than a long blog tonight. And here is a fun conversation from yesterday about ... read more
