Hola! Sadly I didn't make it to the pyramids on Sunday as I was apparently the only one from the hostel who wanted to go (they did another trip on Saturday morning which is how I found out about it, but by the time I got in on Friday night I was exhausted and beyond caring to ask which trips they had to offer), so I went to the zoo instead. Not too bothered, as there's lots of other ruins on the way, though at this place there was the 3rd biggest pyramid in the world. The zoo was right in the middle of I suppose the Hyde Park equivalent, called (let me get the guide book out) Bosque de Chapultepec. I took the Metro out there (so cheap!! I think about 18p for a single ... read more

Tapachula, Chis., a 28 de agosto del 2009. Saludos.

Hello I can't believe it, we're already well into phase 2 of our travels! We arrived in Mexico City not really knowing what to expect, but left loving the place. The city is really beautiful with loads of old architecture that reminded us of a European City, only on a much bigger scale. The sad thing is that Mexico City is actually sinking, it was built on top of a lake and all the beautiful old buildings are starting to fall apart. Our guide said that many of them couldn't be saved and would be gone in the next 50 years. We did offer our building skills but apparently they'd already tried filling in the holes with concrete, I think they should try silicon and gaffer tape....always worked for us! There was a big winter festival ... read more

After returning to the beach for the Christmas and New Year holidays and camping there, we were literally itching for a hot shower. So, we drove over the mouantain again to the Emerald City, (Oaxaca), and have been staying with a friend who has a Temascal at her house. Over the holidays at the beach we participated in drumming classes with an american guy from New Mexico for a few afternoons. He had a large collection of African type drums and showed us how to do some simple drumming. Although it was not planned, we jumped right in on the night of the new years eve full moon party and had a great time. The many people there thought we were real pros improvising. But the beginers just did their simple parts and the whole thing ... read more

We arrived in the City of Oaxaca yesterday and are ensconced in a nice hotel and all ready for the famous Fiesta De Los Rabanos where local people carve large twisted grotesque radish tubes into strange shapes and display them on the main square on the night of the 23rd. The weather is quite cold for here and we have dug deep into the luggage for the cold weather gear. After leaving Antigua in Guatamala, we traveled to Xela (aka Quetzaltenango), and on to the border at El Carmen near Tapachula. We drove a long day up the coast on what seemed like super highway and arrived the same day in Ziploite. We are planning to spend christmas and new year on the beach. The road from the beach to the City of Oaxaca is as ... read more

Swimming in Mexico City through thick layers of smog and drowning in pollution. Winding up and down two lane highways for hours upon hours on our way to Oaxaca. Surrounded by untouched lands of barren landscape full of rocky terrain that is adorned with lanky cacti that are highlighted by the setting sun behind us. Racing against the descending sun and losing miserably into the dark highway of abyss. Upon arrival, Oaxaca's festive lights shine upon the vibrant essence of the Zocolo. Cafes and live music quench the thirst of both locals and tourists. Cobble stone streets escalate towards colorful colonial architecture. Simplicity...less is more. Out of the smog and into the dust we venture away form the tourist track. Four by four, side by side. Indulging in the city's cultural beauty and continuing onto the ... read more

Hola, We have landed in the land of Tequlia and Tacos. We have forgotten how hard it is not to speak the language however we are managing to get by with what we have learnt and with some sign language and pointing. Leanne even managed to purchase a memory card for her camera with the locals. First day in Mexico City was a public holiday, they were celebrating the revolution, hence there wasnt much open. But with Leannes great map skills we found our way around the city pretty easliy. That night we met the people from our tour and tour leader. There are 7 of us including Leanne and myself. Rick the tour leader, is from the South of Mexico and is in a rock goth band, which we looked up on myspace, not really ... read more

We spent one and half glorious months in oaxaca. it was everything and so much more than we had even hoped or expected it to be. both of us agreed whole heartedly that it was one of our favorite destinations on the entire trip. not only did we fall in love with the city but we loved our spanish language school, the friends we made and our teachers, the food we ate, the house and neighborhood we lived in, the mercados we frequented, the ruins and many day trips we took and so so so so much more. my brother graham also came to travel with us for 6 weeks. he was with us for our last 3 weeks in oaxaca and we had an absolute blast. i am 100% positive this added to the fact ... read more
