- Sue - Bob and I arrived in Oaxaca early Monday evening after a four and a half hour bus ride. We don't particularly like the bus company ADO, but it's the only good one that services the area east and south of Mexico City. Unlike the other first class bus lines we're familiar with, Primera Plus and ETN, ADO does not give out free water/soft drinks or a sandwich and snack. Once the passengers have boarded, ADO sends someone onto the bus to sell drinks and snacks. On ADO's service, passengers provide their own food and drinks no matter how long the trip is. After being spoiled on the other bus lines, we felt cheated. Anyway, we arrived safe and sound. A taxi brought us from the first class bus station to our apartment to ... read more

Wednesday 22nd September After a mammoth overnight bus journey lasting 12 hours we arrived in the city of Oaxaca. (pop 265,000). Oaxaca is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of the same name (Oaxaca). There had been Zapotec and Mixtec settlements in valley of Oaxaca for thousands of years in connection with the important ancient centers of Monte Albán and Mitla. We will be visiting Mitla amoungst other sites this week and we're looking forward to it. Its only 9am when we arrive at Hostel Don Nino and our room isnt ready for us until 10pm so we dumped the bags and went for a stroll around town. The hostel is located right beside the Parque Benito Juarez which is a park dedicated to a president and local hero from the 19th Century ... read more

Just like the trip from Mexico City to Puebla, the journey down to Oaxaca was on a modern, comfortable bus, again with the drop down TVs subjecting you to the films you don't want to watch. We feared that the Big snore, who had joined us on our trip from Mexico City, might follow us. But fortunately it was not to be. The drive down to Oaxaca is through a very green landscape (in August anyway) which includes amongst other things palm tree forests and a large cactus forest. These are in rolling hills, on a well maintained highway for some of the way, but as we approached Oaxaca city it became clear that road maintenance is less of a priority in Oaxaca state. On arrival in Oaxaca we quickly and easily transfered to a taxi. ... read more

Last day in Oaxaca today. First on the agenda is to pack all our bits and pieces. By discarding the unnecessary shampoos and so on, we manage to cut down to just 1kg over and everything fits in ok. Amazing. Unfortunately one of the large orange lizard's feet breaks off while packing. I expect another one at least to come off by the end of the flights, but should be able to fix with a little glue. We walk into town for lunch, first having a long last look at the markets on Plazuela Labastida (that first market we'd found on Sunday) where we find a few gifts. Lunch is in a modern cafe on Ave Independencia which is passable. Then we walk down and through the 20 de Noviembre markets again. Liam decides to buy ... read more

Another tour is on the cards today. We'll be visiting the Tule tree, Teotitlan del Valle to see a rug making demonstration, the ruins of Mitla, lunch at a restaurant serving "Camidas Oaxiquenas" Foods of Oaxaca, the ruins of Yagul, and a mezcal distillery. So first the Tule, the widest tree in the world with a circumference of 58m. It is not a very tall cypress, but old at 2000 years. The name Tule comes from a swamp grass that was common to the area before it was developed into farmland. Remains of a recent (or coming?) festival create colour at the base of the tree, with large letters spelling the words "Asuncion de Maria". The arch of the adjacent church has a lavish display of lillies arranged in a huge wreath around the door. The ... read more

An early wakeup call shatters the silence. We take our time getting organised. No rush today. Breakfast is a piece of bread. Around 10:15 we walk down town to find the large toy store. It presents ok, two storeys and lots of stuff, but hard for the kids to get enthused when (a) they've spent all their $200 allowance for Mexico and (b) the stuff is all imported so as expensive as at home, and much the same stuff. So next we head into the main market, the "20 de Novembre". This is gradually coming to life. I have a yearning for a "jugo", a juice, but the lady says "media hora": half an hour. It's only 10:30, but there are lots of stalls open. I really like this market. Produce is sort of in sections ... read more

We're ready to tackle some sightseeing, but first where to go and when? I visit the tour desk in the hotel lobby, and with a little of the lady's english and my spanish we arrange two tours for $1100 each. Today from 10am to 6pm we're touring Monte Alban, Arrazola, Cuilapan de Guerrero and San Bartolo de Coyotepec. The first place is ancient ruins on a hilltop to the southwest of the city, the second the home of the artists that create the colourful semi-mythical creatures that we've seen around. The third place is a sixteenth centry former convent, and lastly the maker of the famous black Zacatecan pottery. The van collects us a little after 10am, and Moses introduces himself. We drive into town to be met by five others for the tour. It will ... read more

We are woken by loud bangs, which we'd heard intermittently last night and continue sporadically through the day. They seem to be fired like fireworks but just to let out a bang. Possibly related to the bicentennial celebrations happening across Mexico. As Alehandro had explained, in 1610 Cortez routed Emperor Moctezuma and exactly 200 years later the Priest Hidalgo started the revolution that gave Mexico its independence (from spanish rule). I'm still no better than yesterday , so we make do with a breakfast buffet at the in-house restaurant which is more expensive than the dinner at $160 each, although I don't partake. The boys had been keen to hop straight in the pool, but a bouncy castle in the room next to the restaurant distracts them. It's a bold move by the hotel as the ... read more
