Five years ago David and I flew into Oaxaca, from Puerto Escondito in a small plane that had all instrument panels broken. The pilot flew over the mountains, skimming over the tree tops until he dipped into the valley where Oaxaca is located. I am not sure which is worse, coming in by bus through continuous windy mountainous roads for 6 hours or flying in by plane. When we arrived, those many years ago, we caught a taxi with another couple who were staying at a bed and breakfast. Once we settled in at Nora's home, we went for a walk to Juarez Park where there was a Friday market. In one section there were 20 people running a barbaque and taco stand. People stood in lines waiting to order. Mexican dance music was bellowing out ... read more

It has been a busy week since I wrote last. On Monday a group of us from the hotel hired a van to take us up to an ecological reserve where a number of villages have come together to offer one day or four day hikes from village to village. The drive was about an hour and a half up into the mountains. When we arrived we hired a guide to take us on a vigorous hike, he also identified planets as we walked through a forested area not dissimiliar to British Columbia. One can chose an easy or difficult walk, you can also walk from village to village, on trails where only people walk, sometimes with donkeys. The area is very isolated, is in a cloud forest and is quite primitive. Our group chose a ... read more

We have moved into our room at Las Mariposas. Our room is simply appointed, Mexican style, with a bed which has a soft matress which is quite a contrast to the hard beds we have been sleeping on. Our room is upstairs. To get up there, I have to pass by flowering purple bushes, and potted geraniums. We share a large sun filled patio area with two other suites The sun in the morning pours through our double doors warming up the tiles, which keeps the room warm throughout the night. As usual we have met interesting people here at the breakfast table. Every morning I wake up to the smell of coffee and the sounds of people talking down below. Yesterday, David and I walked to an organic farmers market, on the way there we ... read more

Thank you for the responses. Yes, Joan I got your e mail, which I have read numerous times, I would love to hear more. Congradulations. Of course Mike can use our place, our bed or the guest room. Oaxaca city: We are so happy to be here. We left Puebla two days ago, we decided to take a chance with no reservations. We found a lovely little hotel within 30 minutes of arriving. We weren't booked for Las Mariposas until today, Jan. 9 and will be here until the 19th. We stayed at this delightful hotel last year where we met so many people. One of the reasons we come here is because of the hotel. Every morning there is breakfast served from 8 to 9:30, there is a central courtyard where everyone gathers and sits ... read more

Cruised out to Oaxaca on Christmas Day and arrived fairly late, so took a look around the city. There was a bit of a festival in the Zocalo (main square) so we had a peek, but a bit too family oriented for us and all the bars were shut, so into bed for an early night. The next day, we went to the Monte Alban archaeological area. Monte Alban was a town situated in the middle of three valleys and throughout the 1st Millienium AD, it was the focal point of all the Oaxacan state, a state consisting mostly of a lot of valleys up to this day. Good sights of some massive valleys on the way to Oaxaca and mountain ranges surrounding every view. Breathtaking. Photos will tell a longer story, but it takes a ... read more

Oaxaca, Oaxaca: The historic center of Oaxaca, Oaxaca was much better than driving around looking for incognito campgrounds throughout and along the outskirts of town. The mercado (market) has very good food for very good prices. I ate the biggest tamale ever seen, seriously this thing was enormous! And, I also had mezcal (like tequila) ice cream, pretty good! The historic center of Oaxaca, Oaxaca has a handful of museums featuring historical and cultural information about the region. Chuck and I walked through two museums. One had exhibits about the ancient indigenous codices from the surrounding area. The other, the culture museum, was expansive in both information and size. The culture museum is housed in the Santo Domingo Cathedral and it interprets cultural and historical information ranging from pre-Hispanic to modern times. We watched local dancers ... read more

A five hour drive turned into a ten hour drive due to military check points and some upset workers who were drinking beers while blocking off the highway for three hours brings us to Oaxaca. Oaxaca's a sweet city, big city feel without the big city pains. There are a lot of artists and students here so there's a great vibe when you're walking around. It also happened to be a particular holiday inwhich fireworks are lit from all the different churches at all hours. Then we happened to run into a parade with lots of music, fireworks and general shenanigans. After a couple nights in Oaxaca we headed to Monte Alban which is an ancient city in ruins on top of a nearby mountain. We figure that the Mayans must have had great butts due ... read more

Hola! A quick update on my adventures in Latin America! As hinted at in my previous entry, I managed to get out of La Paz for a day´s mountain biking last week, which was headed up by the very likeable Miguel of 'Baja Challenge'. Five of us cycled through some beautiful scenery in La Sierra de Laguna just south of La Paz, seeing Santiago on the way and finishing up at a beautiful natural pool with a waterfall. We swam and lunched and the braver ones jumped into the pool from the top of the waterfall - I was not one of them! After another day´s relaxing in La Paz it was time to fly to Mexico City for a night at the vibrant, busy hostel there - right in the city centre with a roof ... read more

Got the bus to Oaxaca (pronounced O-ha-ca) early in the morning. Bus journey was alright as had a good chat with Laura and tried to learn Spanish. Finding it pretty difficult! The hotel was gorgeous with plants and birds everywhere and one particularly noisy parrot! We went into the town and wandered around. Again lots of markets to look and and so much activities going on in the town. To be cultured myself and Laura went to visit a few more churches! after which we treated ourselves to some beers on the terrace with the others in the hotel. We went into town and had dinner on the streets which watching a Mexican band play and the locals dancing. Its amazing how much they all love dancing here! We got up early and got on a ... read more

So there I was, deep in thought about deep listening. Thinking hard about how important it is to just listen to people and let them talk without throwing in your own experiences or ideas, when up walked one of my students to ask if I wanted to play snakes and ladders. Well, does one really have to ask?! Of course I want to play snakes and ladders! Only it turns out we didn’t play snakes and ladders, we played a game called “roll the dice and make up the rules”, and it went a little something like this: First we pulled out the board and made playing piece out of erasers, pencil sharpeners and other desk paraphernalia. Two dice were located and the fun began. I noticed that the board didn’t really look like snakes and ... read more
