Ok, this makes up for the piddly little space I left myself to explain two of the particular wonders of Oaxaca... Mitla was indeed another beautiful site, opposite another very religious symbol - a colonial church (no division there!) - with some exciting tombs underneath that I surprised myself by scrabbling around in. It was dark and damp but exciting, and you could clearly see the three main burial chambers and the marvellous stonework that had carried on below ground -very exciting to be nuder a pyramid! I also managed this time to get up the steep steps, a whole flight, so maybe this is some way forward to being less ruled by Vertigo. l'll keep practicing. There are some amazing wall designs, made by the actual building blocks; rather than be carved in later or ... read more

Is been an interesting few days in Oaxaca (pronounced o-wack-a). Firstly, the noise: the Guelaguetza has been getting into full flow, and this mostly means, from our hostel where we have been getting in pretty knackered by about 9pm each night to sleep at 10pm, we start to hear the fireworks going off from about 10.05. When i say fireworks, I'm talking serious explosions here, that sound as though your garden has just been blown up. I imagine this is a little like what it must feel like to be living in a city under siege, but without the fear. Then the car alarms start, then the bank alarms go off, then Gigi and family get back from their celebrations and talk loudly until they go to bed. Safe in our little cocoons (Mum and Dad, ... read more

An old friend has asked me via facebook, having read my blogs, exactly what I´m doing here. Not a clue, is my answer, aside from seeing as much as possible before I die, which is what I recommend everyone does frankly. I know she´ll agree. After Angel at BandB Mexico was so down on Bamba ("Pfft! All high all the time! Left a couple here for three days before taking them to the bus station! Rubbish!"), we were rather worried they wouldn´t show, especially after the disatrous initial conversation where Jas seemed to spend about ten minutes spelling our names and email addresses to a man who spoke no English. At 9.15am on Friday morning, the time they said they would pick us up by, we were really getting rather worried. But, at 9.17am, a very ... read more

So, it was with a heavy heart that we spent our last day saying good bye to Mexico City. We all really loved it. There's so much to do there, we were tempted to extend our stay some more, but you could spend 6 months there and still have loads to do. Our last day was spent having a lazy morning (much needed after pyramid climbing!!) and then heading to the Mercado. This is the largest covered maket in latin America apparently and it is absolutely massive. We had heard there was great food stalls there and we weren't disappointed! Lots of amazing smells and fuit and veg stalls were there for us and we spent a few leisurely hours strolling through the rows and rows of stalls but didn't buy anything other than food. The ... read more

Early morning arrival We arrived at 6am into Oaxaca on the overnight bus from San Cristobal de Las Casas. We were tired and dirty and after catching a cab to the hostel that we booked for the next evening, we found it closed up behind large iron gates. Even though it says 24 hour reception, we didn't want to wake the manager and get charged for an extra evening as part of our stay. Fortunately, the manager heard us talking and generously checked us into a clean well prepared room without an extra charge. We showered and passed out in bed for half the day before exploring the town that would be our home for the next week. Oaxaca is a lively, friendly place that has a true Mexican feel to it. We noticed that the ... read more

We toured around a bit outside the city today. First stop was the ruins of the Zapotepec capital at Monte Alban. It was occupied between approximately 500 BC to 700 AD. It is located on a hilltop that affords excellent views overlooking the three valleys that connect to form Oaxaca City. The ruins reminded me very much of the Mayan ruins at Copan, Honduras because of the layout of the city and the ruins themselves; not so much at all of the Mayan ruins at Tikal, Guatemala though. I wonder why. Maybe have to do a bit of research when I get time on whether there was any connection between the Zapotepec and the Maya but still, Copan is much further south than Tikal so it's hard to explain. Maybe it's just me and the ruins ... read more

Day Three We are just taking it easy today after all the driving and checking out the historic center of Oaxaca which centers around the Zocolo, the main plaza. We are fortunate because today happens to be the 3rd anniversary of major protests here in favor of better pay for teachers. The protesters occupied the Zocolo for months hoping to force the governor of Oaxaca State to resign. They neither received the pay raise nor saw the governor leave office. What did happen though was a lot of violence and the deaths of 23 protesters—supposedly the biggest political protest that has occurred in Mexico in many years. We got to watch a protest march and a lot of leftist speech-making led by the teachers union. We also got to witness a lot of vandalism—political graffiti on ... read more

Day Two: Today was every bit as grueling as I thought the first day would be. We started out at 6:30AM but it took till around 11 for us to travel the first 100 miles of the 500 mile total. We spent the vast majority of that time crossing the border into Mexico at Ciudad Tecun Uman. As you travel north along the Pacific Coast on CA-2 in Guatemala and approach the border there is a fork in the road—the sign to the left directs you to Tapachula, Mexico which we had to go through to get to the highway heading to Oaxaca and the sign to the right directs you to Tecun Uman. I figured that going right would lead you to the town itself which we had no need to see while the option ... read more

1/5/09 = A church and stormy day in Oaxaca :( Actually had a half decent nights sleep, only ruined by the bitten body I woke up to...my body that is! Been really lucky in Mexico so far; not even seen any mosquitoes, but they got me good and proper last night…arms...legs... back...everywhere! Curse my tasty blood! Skipped out for the tasty eggs and toast breakfast had seen advertised only to be brutally shot down when the lady announced it was ‘Mexican Breakfast’ day. What even is a Mexican breakfast? I’m sure it doesn’t involve anything by Kellogs! To this day, we don’t know for sure what was on that plate, only that it consisted of 3 things: 1) A dark, black and slightly sticky pot of coffee (yuk!) 2) The same sized pot, but this time ... read more
