30/4/09 = V.scary arrival in Oaxaca Another bad sleep. Still awake when a guy came in just before midnight and then kept awake when same guy fell asleep instantly and snored for rest of night. Don’t need to re-iterate how I feel about snorers! Did the half-sleep thing until 8am, then got up, packed up, had breakfast and headed out just after 9:30 to visit Zona Archeological Cholula = a church on a hill/former pyramid. Not going for the church - had quite enough of those - going for the amazing view of the volcanoes you get from the top. Stored bags and pottered off to catch bus; only 5peso = v.cheap. Nice bus man told us where to get off, but didn’t tell us where the church on a hill was. Walked generally until came ... read more

Saturday, March 14th. We are now in the city of Oaxaca at San Felipe Trailer Park in the hills above the city. Our host, Doug French is an American. The past two days from San Cristobal de las Casas to Oaxaca (pronounced wa-HAH-ka) have been the most exhausting and frustrating days we have had on this entire trip. Our Church RVing Mexico guide said that it would be 357 miles and take 12 hours. Mike recommended we overnight in the city of Tehuantepec. We were supposed to bypass the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez, a city of more than 500,000 people because it lacks any colonial buildings or interesting sights. However, we wound up nearly going thru the city center because we either missed a road construction detour or didn’t know where the heck we were going. ... read more

We didn’t accomplish a lot on our first day in Oaxaca as we were still feeling the effects of our turbulent mountain traverse the day before. Upon first pass the city of Oaxaca seemed a pretty decent spot. Its Zocalo, the square at the centre of the city, was impressive with its colonial architecture and a teaming crowd of people either enjoying a drink in one of the multitude of cafes or strolling about soaking up the atmosphere. One thing worth noting that was immediately apparent was that for the first time on this journey we’d met our walking match as the speedy Oaxacans showed an unusual turn of pace as they scooted about their city. Oaxaca is somewhat of a cultural hub for this region and so we had set our sights on seeing its ... read more

Apparently the best way to get to Oaxaca from Puerto Escondido was on one of the frequent express van services. These went straight over the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range rather than taking three hours longer going via the highways and avoiding the high peaks. It was a pretty straight forward choice as we had already clocked up over 25 hours on Mexico’s buses so unnecessary extra hours was certainly not desirable. If the Americans are in search of an alternative form of torture to the much condemned practice of Waterboarding then we’ve discovered it. Neither of us are easily made travel sick particularly to the point of nearly vomiting but our express van service conclusively did the job. The mountain road was an endless series of hairpin and near hairpin bends and for four ... read more

We took a day trip with a private guide on our last day in Oaxaca. He took us to the Friday market at Ocatlan. This market was fairly overwhelming. With the guide along, we never really felt like it was OK to stop and buy something, or to explore. It kept feeling like we were rushing through the market, to get somewhere - and then suddenly, it was over. We had "seen" the market, but we hadn't really seen it because we spent most of our time trying to follow our guide through the crowded stalls. Next, we saw a gorgeous church restored by a famous artist in Ocatlan. He had painted the outside and inside so creatively. He is very famous for his work in Mexico, having also painted inspirational murals in Mexico City's subway ... read more

So once upon a time I was studying Spanish in the country called Mexico when I decided to go home to the United States to see my family. I thought that I was not going to come back to Mexico, so I bought an apartment. The apartment was a townhouse with three floors and I decided to renovate it to fit my tastes. A couple days later a good friend of mine heard I was in town and came over to see my new apartment. However, this was interesting because I had not seen this person since 8th grade. He convinced me that I needed to return to Mexico to finish out my semester there. I said I would return, only under the conditions that he join me, so we hopped on a plane to Mexico. ... read more

The days that we spent in Oaxaca were, for the most part, very leisurely. This beautiful colonial town is perfect for long strolls, with its Spanish colonial architecture, broad plazas, ancient churches, and delectable food. It feels that there is an equal part traveller or Spanish student for every native Mexican here. As many people are here studying in language schools, it is easy to find people who will converse with you solely in Spanish. So I had lots of opportunities to practice. Oaxaca is also a central location for artists in this area, and many boutiques along the pedestrian drag show this off. It is easy to take a bus to Monte Alban. There are many companies offering the service. It took us some time to find the one I had read about in the ... read more
