Well, my year of travelling has finally started. First of all flew into Toronto which was pretty amazing. Went to Niagra falls the day after and got really, really wet on the 'maid of the mist' boat, but it was amazing. I think everyone should do it before they die. We also went to a winery owned by Dan Akyroyd where they make ice wine, and we got some free tasters. Went straight to the CN tower, which is someting like 150 stories high. You could see for miles and miles and Toronto looked beautiful at night. The strangest bit about the tower is the glass floor, its such a strange feeling because it feels like your floating. The next day I got on a bus for a 30 hour journey to Winnipeg in Manitoba. I ... read more

Wow two updates within a couple of days ... either you guys are very lucky or I've got some spare time up my sleeve. So here we go with the Saskatoon update. After weeks of living in dorms and talking to perfect strangers, it felt great to be heading back over to Saskatoon for some R & R with some old pals. Rich and Cei-Cei were nice enough to provide me with a comfy bed to sleep in for a couple of days - something my back really needed after all these months of lugging a duffel bag around. I may be stubborn but I refuse to travel with a stroller bag. I find there is nothing masculine about running for a bus or train with a stroller bag. The evening of Day 1 saw us ... read more

SASKATCHEWAN - land of big skies We took the northerly route through Saskatchewan taking us through Saskatoon. We thought we might stop in Saskatoon to visit 'Paris in the Prairies" but after battling with the sprawling subsurbs consisting (so it seemed to us) of an endless industrial estate we decided to leave town. All of our journey across the prairies had not been boring as we had been warned. We both enjoyed being able to see for miles and miles and everywhere there was something new to look at with little farmsteads, small lakes, the odd tree and bits of wildwife. We saw a couple of dead cyotees on the road too. Our long run of 330k to Drumheller was not an enjoyable day as the weather was cold and drizzling and even with 'happy glasses" ... read more

We started the day at Brian and Irene's in Brandon where we headed to breakfast at Tim Horton's! This is the most popular fast food eatery in Canada. More popular than McDonalds. They are most known for coffee and donuts. The food was great! We tried blueberry fritters, cinnamon rolls, apple fritters, and a Boston creme. From there we headed off across the prairie to the Province of Saskatchewan. We have learned so much about farming and prairie life here. The crops are being harvested, we watched combines separating grain from straw all along our journey today. We stopped and ate with friends in Regina. We have eaten amazing food. One example was Gopher Hill Cake; Yummy! We toured the training facility for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Really neat place, packed with history. We then ... read more

If we thought the rockies were intense, welcome to the prairies, so far close on a 1000km of supposedly flat land. Everybody you speak to tells you, "oh yeah its all down hill from the rockies" , "oh yeah, its all flat from *insert town we are passing through" But well......its not. I mean, compared to the rockies, this is flat, thats for sure, but the majority of the riding has been up and down small hills. The prairies are varied and beautifull, the one thing that is shared in common of all the areas we have passed through prairies so far is that you have a humongous, beautifull, ever changing sky, and , there are absouloutley no trees! A lady me and teyln chatted with told us "In the rockies, you know your coming to ... read more

Neither of us had ever been to Saskatchewan. We had several days off and it was only about 60 miles away, so why not. We decided we would go up to Regina, the provincial capital and the second largest city in the province (after Saskatoon), and on the way we would visit Moose Jaw. We intended to just drive through Moose Jaw and continue on to Regina, but Moose Jaw turned out to be an interesting-looking little resort town, so we decided to spend the night and check it out. We found a nice campsite in a city park just across the river from town and settled in. The town has a very colorful history as a wide-open center for bootleggers, gangsters, crooked cops, and speakeasies, and during the prohibition era was a major hub for ... read more

We made it to the airport. Now that Todd knows that Larry C is here he felt it was OK for him to go. If I thought the weather was bad yesterday, it was nothing compared to today. Our flight has not been canceled, but we’re not off the ground yet. I took a picture out the front window that I will post once I get to Toronto….... read more
