Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Wild Asters
Wild Asters
They grow everywhere here in the rocks and roadsides.
Sept 11 - Five years since 9/11 Sept 12/13/14 Cape Breton, Nova Scotia We arrived in Pictou, Nova Scotia to an obvious air of excitement. We thought they were sure happy to see us but we soon found out it was because Condoleza Rice, US Foreign Secretary was about to visit there later in the day. We toured the Hector on the Quay - a museum and a replica of the boat that brought 33 Scottish families to this area in the 1773's. Conditions on the ship were unbelievably cramped and smallpox erupted causing the death of many of the children. [View Full Entry]

Sept. 5/6/7/8/9/10 (we overstayed by a couple of days according to our preliminary plan) Prince Edward Island - WOW This has to be one of the most beautiful places we've seen on this planet! Farming, fishing harbors, red sand beaches, golf courses, Celtic misuc, fantastic scenery and great people! And everything is so close we keep overestimating how far it is to the next place we want to see - can't get used to the .6km type distances on the signs. You can drive around the coastal area of the whole Island in 15 hours. We don't know where to start [View Full Entry]

Sept.4/ 5 New Brunswick Con't We saw Fundy National Park through a haze of fog and rain. Parks are fantastic, fun places in the sun but have a totally different atmosphere when it's raining. Still a beautiful place. Since we were only about an hour out of Saint [View Full Entry]

New Brunswick

August 31/Sept 1/2/3/4 - New Brunswick ....the only province that is completely bilingual. All signs - government and businesses etc. are in both languages. It seems most of the people speak both languages. We met some nice young boys on a golf course and Larry asked the one little fellow (about 9 years old) who spoke English with a French accent if he was French or English and his answer was "both". Now wouldn't it be wonderful if the whole world thought like that!! It would be a much more peaceful place. We entered the province at Campbellton and took the [View Full Entry]

August 30/31 - The Gaspe Peninsula of Quebec Followed Highway 20 up the South side of the Saint Lawrence with our destination in mind for the evening to be at Gaspe. This area of the Gaspe Peninsula of Quebec is call the Bas Saint Laurent. Originally the Basque people from France were here to hunt wales even before Cartier arrived in the 1500’s. We have scenic views of the river as it widens the further east we travel. Little towns and farms populate the roadside continually so it seems there are always buildings in view. The farms are close together and [View Full Entry]

But, with summer nearing it's end, we look forward to seeing the beautiful fall colors down east that many have told us about. Our itinerary: First to Yorkton to say goodbye to the [View Full Entry]

The Praires have their beauty
The Praires have their beauty
This is near Whitewood, SK, but it could be many places on the prairies. It just struck me as a typical scene that I could record for others to see.
Odometer: 42920 km The travel is all familiar, old ground, from here to home in Calgary. The temptation will be to ride through it with out taking notice of anything, thinking that I know everything there is to know about the country here. I’ll have to overcome that numbness and try to keep my senses as alert as they have been for the rest of the trip. My plan is to travel on the TransCanada to Indian Head; slip over to the Qu’Appelle Valley and past Katepwa, the location of our cottage back in the forties; through Labret; breakfast in Fort [View Full Entry]

Introduction This canoe trip in northern Saskatchewan runs from Paull Lake down the Paull River to the Churchill River and terminates in Missinipe. Paull Lake is accessed by float plane. The paull is a tributary of the Churchill. In some years, the water levels can be low enough to make this trip difficult. Not this year. In fact, some portages were washed out. For any canoe trip in northern Saskatchewan, the missinipe canoe outfitters, , are highly recommended for supplies and advice. July 31, 2006 We wer [View Full Entry]
