Route 389 in December

I would like to travel up Route 389 from Baie-Comeau,QC to Labrador City,NL at the end of December.

Is it feasible to go up to Labrador City from Baie-Comeau along Route 389 in December. I figure that temperatures can drop as low as -40 or even -45 and am wondering if a normal vehicle(G5 or Focus) will withstand such temperatures? Furthermore the road conditions are worrying me: Is it possible with such a vehicle or will I get stuck in the snow three miles down the way?
If you consider it to be possible, what kind of stock should I take with me for the case that something should happen?
How long would that take(one way)? I sawsome very nice pictures of the way up have any of you been that way?

What alternative routes would you propose? I will be leaving from Montréal and have exactly one week for my trip. Would this be a good alternative?

Thank you for your help!
