Happy New Year to all our blog readers! After a fun Christmas we are busy getting ready to leave on Dec.30th for some adventure in Central America. We will start our trip touring the hot spots of Costa Rica for a few weeks and then visiting three different beach towns along the Costa Rican Pacific Coast. In early February we will travel to Belize and spend two weeks on one of our favourite islands - "Caye Caulker". We are also hoping to take a short trip into Guatemala to visit some of the famous sites there. We will be home by mid February to welcome our two new grandchildren!!! My goal is to send a blog each week. Hopefully you have a few minutes to check out what we are up to. Best wishes for 2013!... read more

Summer in Saskatchewan is always so beautiful and such a special place to be! We enjoyed our family, went camping, and attended the Blanchette family union in Meota at the end of July. We were able secure an extended family camping site at Meota Regional Park. About 15 people camped with us in our designated site. We registered and enjoyed the social on Friday, and on Saturday we hosted the many visitors that came to the group site with coffee and a little fruit. Most brought something to add to the group effort including tarps to protect us from the sun's blistering rays. A short walk or drive got people down to the beach area to cool off and visit more. Later in the afternoon, we headed to Vawn for the family church service, followed, of ... read more

I don’t know how many of you have ever been to Saskatchewan (again - Sas-KATCH-ewan, not Saska-CHEW-an), but Peter told me years ago that we would never, ever go. Not even to cross it off "the list". This is because his grandparents were from there, and they had had to drive that long, straight, road, back and forth, back and forth, year after year, to visit. And, while I’m completely entertained by long straight stretches with nothing in them but grass and the occasional cloud, it’s probably much more boring to 3 little boys, trapped in the car. But then! Friends moved there - and not to the thriving metropolis of Saskatoon, but to a little town an hour or so south, called Outlook (Google map http://goo.gl/maps/DtyrQ). So, despite the "never, ever going", we’ve been there ... read more

You don’t really get a name like "Big Ball of String Girl" if you aren’t interested in roadside attractions. Also, HAVING the label actually makes me feel entitled to stop and see every little thing. Like, it’s my responsibility to stop and see if it’s worth a picture. Which is why between Outlook and Fargo ND we saw the World’s Tallest Wheat, the World’s Largest Moose and the World’s Largest Buffalo In fact, we had to reroute just to go to Moose Jaw to see the World’s Largest Moose - "Mac". Mac is 32 feet tall, and is still (at the moment) the Tallest/Largest. (There seems to be something in the works in Sweden, but nothing completed as far as I could confirm...) (Google maps http://goo.gl/maps/Tjlnd). I assumed that that was about all Moose Jaw had ... read more

We woke up this morning to a beautiful prairie sunrise! Yes, it was a bit of an early awakening for two girls who didn't get to bed until after 2 am, but it was too exciting to miss it. Due to being off schedule, they served brunch instead of breakfast and lunch this morning. We shared a delicious omelet and crab eggs benedict around 10:30. Then we went back to bed and slept for another three hours! Feeling almost normal at this point. We are stopped at the moment in a small town, Melville, SK. We're supposed to be in Winnipeg around 9 pm tonight. Yes, I am writing this from the train! We’ve had a cell signal pretty consistently every time we’ve checked since leaving last night, but this is the first time I’ve tried ... read more

During the planning stages of my trip I realized that I could not travel for an entire year without returning home for a “break” as I am very family oriented and knew that homesickness would be inevitable. The fact that my sister would be graduating from the college of Dentistry in June gave me the perfect excuse to return home at what just happened to be the "halfway point". I spontaneously changed my original flight date of May 30/12 to May 23/12 so that I could return home a week early. I was feeling tired and had lost my energy to keep moving forward. It takes a lot of effort to keep motivated and continue moving to different places, saying goodbye to old friends, and trying to meet new friends. I was finished. My mind kept ... read more
