Yesterday marked the last bit of lengthy driving for a while - it was another 9 hour haul from Winnipeg into Saskatoon. But what a drive it was! Starting out around the Peg the skies were overcast. It threatened rain for the longest time before the skies finally did open for a bit. However, on the horizon we could see a clearing in the cloud cover, and without having to wait too long we got some of the first blue sky of our trip. The pictures have a difficult time portraying just how big the skies are out here - it's something that you have to see for yourself to appreciate. Still, the whole backdrop does make for some great photos. We got settled in at Saskatoon, and then after a quick stop in at the ... read more

We had a great visit with Eugene & Claudia, lots n lots of laughter. Saskatoon was not one of our stops but a friend I had met in Haines Junction, YT lives there. I had not seen Marla in 15 years. We could stop here because we had bypassed The Pas, and Marla had one more of my photo albums. This would be the only time I could stop to see Marla lol don't know when I will get this kind of opportunity again. The last time I saw her, her twins were babies, now they are young people lol So we stopped and I got to catch up with Marla. She has not changed at all lol. We stayed for a lil over and hour. I took pics or should I say Nat took pics ... read more

Woke up early to Otis barking at the caretaker of the campgrounds I was staying at in Swan Hills! It was 5:30 am! At first I thought it was some kind of wild animal (bear, maybe) and then I saw the flashlight and knew a bear wouldn't be carrying a flashlight! At least I know, Otis will protect me! Breakfast, a short walk and packed up the tent tent to head into Edmonton. (At least West Edmonton Mall). Lots of construction when I got onto the Yellowhead Highway. Before I got there, I saw a deer and some captive bison along the road! Got to the mall around noon and enjoyed walking through---looking at the waterpark (looked like fun, but needed my buddy, Sam to enjoy it with me), the amusement park, small and the hockey ... read more

There have been many travels since my last blog; Berlin, Andorra, the Pyranees, Alicante, Albarracin, Majorca, Picos de Europa, Bilbao, Asturias and Teruel. We travelled a great deal of the country overland by car, as the realisation came to us that our time here was coming to an end and we had spent too much of our free time and money travelling abroad. Spain needed some attention, and finally with a basic understaniding of the language we could travel with ease, and get off the beaten track... The usual bevvy of sumertime fun awaited us in Canada, and our routine combination of music festivals, camping, weddings, and parties, all went down with great success. But as the end of summer approached, the frenetic pace of constant travel has slowed, and Spain already feels like a distant ... read more

Well I finished up work now and I'M SOOOOOO HAPPPPY ABOUT THAT!!!! I only had one day off before we headed to Wilkie, Saskatchewan for my cousin Jordan's wedding to Tamara. A couple of cousins, my brother and his gf and my parents and I drove in a 3 car convoy from Calgary to Wilkie and just outside of Stettler my dad who was bringing up the rear and was speeding up to catch up to the others and got pulled over by the cops and given a $166 speeding ticket. Not the best start to the weekend. We drove through rain almost the whole way but it was party sunny in Wilkie when we arrived. We met up with everyone at the campground and had some bbq and some drinks and visited. Was fun! The ... read more

We had a nice breakfast at the Hawood Inn, one of the nicer hotels in town. Then we stop and grab a couple of sweet buns for later at the local bakery, which is bustling with people getting coffees, papers, and bakery items to go. We are heading home, and plan to take secondary and grid roads to see more of the countryside along the way. We take highway #263, AKA ‘the scenic route’ south through the park and stop at Trappers Lake and Sandy Lake before leaving the park. Trappers Lake is very small, shallow with lots of reeds and bulrushes, and with mud shores. It also allows no motor boats, so is nice and quiet, and has only 5 camping spots. However, it is not very inviting, so we move on. Sandy Lake is ... read more

We hiked several trails today, starting early in the day to see as much as we could. We started with Shady Lake trail, billed as a “moderate terrain 1.7 km loop”. Then there is a 1 km spur trail taking you to a lookout tower called Height of the Land. Sounded easy. Boy was I wrong! I walk every day, and this walk just about did me in! It took us almost 2 hours from start to finish (you couldn’t walk any faster, due to the grade and condition of the trail.) The trail went down a long way using stairs, and then it turned into a narrow, muddy, uneven trail full of big tree roots that had us climbing up steep grades, then down, then up again till our legs and lungs burned. If you ... read more

I have a week off of work, and the weather is supposed to be cool and rainy all week, so we decided to get in the car and go somewhere where it is sunny. It seems counterintuitive, but the forecast says it will be nice and sunny in the north. So, we have decided to head north. Waskesui Lake, in Prince Albert National Park is a favorite summer vacation spot for lots of Saskatchewan folks. Neither of us has ever been there, so that is our destination. As soon as we get out of town and start heading north, the land turns into rolling hills dotted with hay bales and farms, both old and new. Just off of highway #2 we find an old abandoned farm. You can see that it was once someone’s home. A ... read more
