Still seems surreal that we are finally doing our East trip across Canada and down the US coast. My focus this summer was our daughter, Chelsea’s, wedding on September 3, 2011. It was a beautiful wedding, and we are so very happy to now have Cole Shepherd as part of our family. So, I am leaving with happy thoughts (though sad too, realizing that it will be awhile before we see our kids again), pleased that everything went so well.... read more

Left Melfort later afternoon, supper in Saskatoon with our daughter, got to our farm at 10 PM. Looked frantically for my passport which I could not find in Melfort, and finally decided it must be in Melfort. Decided to drive back there early morning to get it as I cannot get into the USA without it.... read more

We spent last night in a campground we got out of the 2011 RV and Campground guide from Trailer Life Directory. Compfort Plus RV Park, White City, Sask. A place we won't come to again. We usually don't complain about a place, but this place is a rip off. We thought because it is listed in the book that it would be nice, and this is the first place worth complaining about. It is on a terrible road, kind of in a backyard of a farm, they have lots of spaces, but not enough water pressure to go around. Took my reservation, but when we got here they were confused about where to put us......anyway my rating for this place is 5 out of 10. If that even matters. Our last days in Winnipeg were great. ... read more

Day 75 – August 4 Gordon Howe Campground, Saskatoon, SK. Our random spurts of spontaneity really made for a serious situation that ended up being an amazing experience. I’ll explain in a minute. We packed up the car on the morning of Saturday, July 21, and headed east. Our plan all along was to visit a high school friend in Fernie BC but did not hear back from her soon enough because she was out of town, so we made a drastic change of plans. The plan all along was to skip out on Edmonton. Not much farming, stories of less-than-interesting vacations or the actual geographic location of the city were all reasons we’d never really considered going. For some reason we felt no need to head directly east with all of this free time and ... read more

Day 75 – August 4 - Part 2 Monday morning came really fast and our plans had shaped a bit more. I had been communicating with my cousin Daniel who lives in Edmonton, and after our afternoon of rafting the plan was to get in the car and drive to meet him and his fiancé Missy for some barbeque. Though the rafting was extremely fun we ended up starting excessively late because we had to wait around for people. I texted Dan at six to tell him we were just leaving and wouldn’t make it for a reasonable time. We grabbed a quick snack and drove towards Red Deer to camp near Sylvan Lake. My eating habits had been sporadic and unbalanced the past couple of days which usually happens if we have big goals for ... read more

As we descended down from Cypress Hills Provincial Park, we crossed the border into Saskatchewan... and onto a hunting trail. Outside the park boundary we were met with what appeared to be endless fields. It was incredible! The road ahead travelled straight towards the horizon, with a few small knolls between us and the ‘end of the earth’ as I started to call it. Following dirt roads for what felt like hours, we ended up back on bitumen outside a town called Consul. We noticed that most vehicles were heading towards the outskirts of town where there were a few large festival type tents set up. A rodeo!!! Talking to the lady on the gate, who happened to be Linda Brown, the Mayor of Consul, we were sold on the idea of staying for the rodeo ... read more

Blackstrap Provincial Park is a conservation area with a man made lake, a provincial campground, and a man made mountain; Blackstrap Ski Hill. Driving back south from Dawson through Whitehorse was another beautiful drive, I’m sure that word is getting over used in the first couple of entries, but it is the simple truth. Nothing too exciting happened on our drive, we spotted more black bears on the sides of the highway and enjoyed the sunny day we were given. In Whitehorse we got the oil changed and the tires balanced on our beast- that is the name that we have finally bestowed on to our Ford Escape- Beast. She can make it up and down the Dempster and can keep on driving even after sustaining a few battle scars. From Whitehorse we decided to get some more miles under us and woke early for a long few days of driving. We headed all the way to Fort Nelson ... read more
