Internet access has been spotty while visiting friends the last little while, in the sense that I've been too busy having fun to post to the blog. However, now that I'm back on the road all that has changed. Today was an absolutely epic drive from Vanderhoof, BC (just west of Prince George) to Watson Lake up in the Yukon. Suffice to say that the drive across the Yellowhead to Smithers was peachy, but half way up the Cassiar in the middle of no-man's land things started to get interesting. My lasting impression/description of the upper portion of the Cassiar - long (500 km) - right through mountains - twisty switchbacks with hairpin turns - gravel surface - snow covered - desolate - gas stations closed at 6 pm, used the 60 liters i had in ... read more

Soooo a few days and no updates. But fear not! Now we're back on track. There has been lots of visiting this past little while. First we went from Saskatoon to visit Al in Westlock, Alberta. Though we were only there for a handful of hours we still had a fantastic little trip up. Dan - Al's boyfriend whom I haven't seen since my Ottawa days - was also in town visiting, so it was a good-sized reunion all around. That night we had a fantastic salmon fillet for dinner, alongside some risotto and stir-fried vegetables. Come morning Val and I drove Dan down into Edmonton to see his folks for a bit, and from there the two of us got to our business in the city. We did the West Edmonton mall for an hour ... read more

Yesterday marked the last bit of lengthy driving for a while - it was another 9 hour haul from Winnipeg into Saskatoon. But what a drive it was! Starting out around the Peg the skies were overcast. It threatened rain for the longest time before the skies finally did open for a bit. However, on the horizon we could see a clearing in the cloud cover, and without having to wait too long we got some of the first blue sky of our trip. The pictures have a difficult time portraying just how big the skies are out here - it's something that you have to see for yourself to appreciate. Still, the whole backdrop does make for some great photos. We got settled in at Saskatoon, and then after a quick stop in at the ... read more

Ontario is freakin' huge. What a difference a day makes. First of all, we actually got to sleep in today. What a relief that was since each of the two previous nights I only got a few hours. Combine that with the marathon drive to T-Bay the day before and I was dead tired. Sleeping in 'til 9 was a fantastic fix for that. As we hit the road the sun came out, melting the ice patches which formed on the truck the previous night. Thunder Bay didn't get hit as hard with the bad weather as did the Wawa area. Come morning we were the only ones it seemed who had evidence of driving through the bad bits. Today was a perfect day for travel - sunny and about 7 or 8 degrees without a ... read more

Things got going the night of Tuesday the 20th. The bulk of that day was spent running last minute errands (read: buying a new iPod and closing an account at the 407 ETR office), and then through the afternoon and evening I finished packing the last of my gear. Val was at the house in Hockley from 4 pm onward to help with that, too. I can't believe that everything fits! The truck is definitely sitting pretty low in the back - particularly on the left hand side where the toolbox is sitting in the bed. Some others (mom) contend that I'm a fatty in the driver's seat. I beg to differ. We pulled out of Hockley at 4:20 Wednesday morning and got as far as Alliston before stopping. Timmies was in order for a cup ... read more
