THE ROCKIES OR NOT Having missed the Rocky Mountains on our way through due to bad weather and having discovered that it was now much improved on the Glacier Parkway between Jasper and Banff we debated whether to rush off there to take a look. However, having worked out that we would have needed to travel about 500 miles there in one day, one day up and down the route and then 500 miles back to Vancouver we decided to be sensible and stay closer to Vancouver. THE DRY VALLEYS So instead of rushing to the Rockies we cruised around the dry valleys north east of Vancouver. Here in the Kamloops Plateau area they do not get much rain and the highsides are quite barren except for the wild sage which scents the air. It ... read more

VANCOUVER ISLAND We arrived in Port Hardy on the ferry late at night and just as we got the bikes under cover at the hostel it started to rain and it continued to rain until about 2pm the next afternoon when we eventually left town on 23 Sept. We managed to ride for a few hours in the intermitant rain through countryside that was not dissimilar to England except for the pine clad hills. We stopped for the night at Selway in the rain and it rained and rained. We discovered a few days later that Port Hardy had actually been cut off due to floods not long after we had left so we got out of town just in time. Our over riding memory of Vancouver Island was rain, rain and a bit more ... read more

ATLANTIC TO PACIFIC ACHIEVED!!! Our arrival in Prince Rupert meant that we had ridden from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Although the last time we had seen a "real" sea had been Port Hope Simpson in Labrador it did not seem that we had not seen a sea as we had seen several huge lakes - Lac St Jean in Quebec and Lake Superior - one of the Great Lakes. THE INSIDE PASSAGE We decided to catch the ferry from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy on the northern tip of Vancouver Island. This is a 15 hour ferry journey that travels down the Inside Passage. We had to be down at the port at 6am which was a little hard after spending a very late night the night before chatting to a mad American who was ... read more

TO PRINCE RUPERT - 8000 miles gone! We checked the weather forecast and it continues to be forecast for 2 degrees C and sleeting but forecasting 17 degrees and sunny up north so we set off from Nelson and rode 700 miles for 2 days in the rain and cold (thank goodness for heated jackets) up to Prince George. Then we headed west towards Prince Rupert in cold, crystal clear weather through fantastic scenery that just got better and better. It is the best scenery that we have seen so far in Canada (but we have not been to the Rockies - could they be better). ... read more

HAVE WE MISSED THE ROCKIES? We rode across the prairies and eventually Calgary loomed out of the wheat fields and at Calgary the Rockies loomed in the distance. After several hours riding we reached the Rockies and unfortunately the rain too. We headed towards Banff and then up to Lake Louise but saw nothing as it was pouring with rain and the clouds so low that we were not really sure if there were mountains hiding away there although the occassional glimpse did reveal snowy topped moutains. NELSON We therefore rushed west to the sunnier side of British Columbia. We stopped off at Kelowna for a very expensive new back tyre for Mark's bike (200 pounds - twice what it would be in the UK) and then headed to Nelson near the US border where we ... read more

DRUMHELLER Drumheller Valley is in the heart of the Alberta Badlands and is stunning natural scenery formed by erosion. It is also an area where tens of thousands of dinosaur bones have been discovered and is home to the fantastic Royal Tyrrell Museum. We spent almost a whole day at the Royal Tyrrell Museum as in addition to the very fine models of dinosaus it is a serious paleontology authority. We also enjoyed a day cruising around the Drumheller Valley visiting the famous Hoo Doos (rock formations), the Last Chance Saloon in Wayne which is reached by crossing 11 bridges in 4 miles and generally admiring the interesting scenery. We camped at Drumheller and awoke after a chilly last night there to find the tent frozen solid and the bikes covered in frost too!!... read more

SASKATCHEWAN - land of big skies We took the northerly route through Saskatchewan taking us through Saskatoon. We thought we might stop in Saskatoon to visit 'Paris in the Prairies" but after battling with the sprawling subsurbs consisting (so it seemed to us) of an endless industrial estate we decided to leave town. All of our journey across the prairies had not been boring as we had been warned. We both enjoyed being able to see for miles and miles and everywhere there was something new to look at with little farmsteads, small lakes, the odd tree and bits of wildwife. We saw a couple of dead cyotees on the road too. Our long run of 330k to Drumheller was not an enjoyable day as the weather was cold and drizzling and even with 'happy glasses" ... read more

MANITOBA Leaving Ontario we briefly hit the Trans Canada Highway and all the Labor Day Holiday traffic heading home to Winniepeg. We turned north off onto a more minor road and had a fab 30km or winding road until we hit much flatter farmland that did not look very prosperous. The roads are long and straight. We stopped to check the map in Beausejour and Sally decided it looked like a cowboy style town - hopefully a photo attached. We continued to head north east north of Winnepeg and took a gravel road from Inwood to Clarkleigh which went through some marshland that resembled Lincolnshire on a much larger scale. All along the road we saw small bluish coloured small snakes that we were later told are garter snakes. FARMLAND The further west we travelled the ... read more
