We had a very leısurely two days. Yesterday after the markets we had a rest. Thıs was the fırst non actıvıty for a long whıle. Had a half and half meal last nıght. Lamb kebabs were to dıe for. Chıcken wıth Pıstachıo nuts was so so. We chose a restaurant that dıd the huge bread that rıses on the top layer. Ok. Have only had pıdda bread served to us once. It,s all french bread. today we went to the blue mosque and the Ayasofıa. “Then Moses went up to Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab and climbed Pisgah Peak, which is across from Jericho. And the Lord showed him the whole land from Gilead as far as Dan; all the land of Naphtali; the land of Ephraim and Manasseh; all of the land of Judah, extending to the Mediterranean Sea; the Negev; the Jordan Valley with Jericho, the city of palms, as far as Zoar. Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said I will give it to your descendents.’” - Deuteronomy 34: 1-4. As I read through the passage, I thought back to the previous day when I stood on that very same peak and looked out over the Promised Land just as Moses ... read more

Step one is now completed and I am now the proud owner of a Syrian Visa. Trying to locate the Syrian Consulate in Dubai was an interesting exercise as it appears they do not like to answer there phones instead preffering to send us to a non existant website! Lama came to my rescue by ringing and listening to the arabic versions and I eventually found the requirements online with a visa form. My first attempt at going to the visa was reasonably succesful a random map which showed the locations of all the schools in Dubai and one of the schools was apparantly close to the consulate and thus helped me locate the general area of the embassy and off I toddled. I arrived at the Consulate without getting to lost and couldn't believe it ... read more

We got up very early to take advantage of the early light to take some more photos. However, it was so windy there was too much dust in the air. No photos! We had breakfast and then got on our way to Damascus. Once out in middle of nowhere, Al decided he wanted us to drive the car and he would film us driving, so, we got off the paved road and in a middle of desert, where it was flat as far as you could see that was fun being out there driving around. When Lisa took the wheel, she was doing doughnuts and kicking up lots of dust. We had a great time getting dusty. Again we had the same issue with road signs, either there were none or when we spotted one, it ... read more

The flight: $140 USD Shay and I flew from Izmir to Istanbul on Saturday morning. The Atlas Jet flight was only 40 minutes long and we were actually served a meal, a brown bread, pimento cheese sandwich along with our choice of beverage. I, of course, chose çay (Turkish tea), which I have become very fond of. It is served in a clear, small, tulip shaped glass with a couple of optional sugar cubes and a little, tiny spoon to stir. Our Hostel: $18 USD per person, per night (female dorm) We had no trouble taking the Metro from the airport to Sultanahmet (the old European side of Istanbul...very touristy). Once we arrived in Sultanahamet, we were totally lost. Luckily, we recieved help from a local man that has moved to Florida and was back for ... read more

To get to Germany is a bit of a mission, especially when you go for the cheapest flights. That meant that I had to fly 8 hours to Dubai, and then spend another 8 hours at the airport before leaving on another 6and a half hour flight to Munich. (Which is a bit of a miracle in itself as when I booked the tickets there was a mixup between my dad and I and for a while there were no tickets, and then suddenly tickets at R1000 cheaper than the previous tickets, amazing grace) It's not too bad to be in dubai airport for so long, a lot of people spend so long in shopping centres, and that is basically what the airport is. Some of the highlights of the trip was meeting Philip Morkel from ... read more
