We are back in Istanbul now after a super long bus ride. We have done quite a bit in the last few days that we spent in the Cappadocia area, so I’ll try and sum it up here! Three days ago we drove from Pamukkale to the Cappadocia area. That was a long drive. With a few stops along the way it took over 12 hours. Our first main stop was in Konya to visit the site of Rumi’s tomb. Rumi was a very famous Sufi mystic of the 13th century. The whirling dervishes were started by Rumi and they are Sufi mystics as well. So Rumi was very important in the Islam, especially Sufi mystic, tradition. The tomb was gorgeous and very elaborate and there were many tombs around his of other Sufi mystics. We ... read more

Tři holky a dva kluci. Těšili jsme se víc na Jordánsko a o Sýrii si mysleli, e jedeme do absolutní divočiny. Přečetli jsme cestopisy z netu a nakoupily Lonely Planet a Rough Guide.

Trying to sleep last night was kind of difficult; not because of the sleeping surface, but because of how sunburnt my arms were! We actually had really comfortable cushions to lay our sleeping bags out on, so that was no problem, but I could not get comfortable with my burns . Inside the sleeping bag, my arms felt like they were on fire, but outside the sleeping bag, they were freezing cold! It was not a fun night. Anyway, I guess that’s what I get for being such an idiot. So, we got up this morning around 9 and neither of us really felt like moving right away. Luckily we did have our bag of food and fruit pretty close by, so we had a breakfast of kiwis, leftover raviolis, Viva snacks and dry cereal ... read more

What could be better than waking up to breakfast on the beach? We sipped our Turkish tea and planned our day while soaking up the sun and enjoying the view. We then packed up the car and drove into the town to explore Fethiye a bit before we leave. We spot some ruins carved into the mountain that bordered the back of the town. We park the car, walk up a tiny street and find some old stairs leading to right to these old structures built 6000 years ago! The view of the city and harbor below is stunning and we feel very fortunate to be the only ones in the world to be standing in this spot at this moment. After lunch and some shopping we head south toward Antalya. The drive is through the ... read more

Middle East » Syria » West » Krak des Chevaliers April 16th 2008

Crac de Chevaliers, home of Richard Lionheart, in the middle of Crusader country. Doesn't that just bring back memories of all those good (and bad) movies about knights, crusaders, arab wars and the attempts to control Jerusalem in the middle ages... Well, it's all that you could imagine it to be! We turned up the night before we were to go into the castle after a particularly partying, singing, drinking truck ride, and rocked up to our banquet dinner very merry already. And we had a fantastic night eating great Syrian food, drinking bad local wine and very moreish Raki - the local spirit which is very like ouzo and has a definite kick - and singing various Australian and Kiwi songs when we could remember the words. Loads of fun, and our hotel had beautiful ... read more

Middle East » Turkey April 16th 2008

April 16, 2008 Turkey General comments Turkey is a wonderful place to visit. There is a lot to do and a lot to see. The countryside we saw is beautiful, and varied, from almost desert to the beautiful mountains, the Mediterranean and Aegean coast and the very exciting city of Istanbul and the smaller cities and towns we visited. We never visited the eastern side of Turkey or the Black Sea area and we are told it is also a very interesting and different experience. I suspect that that part of the country is a little less developed and poorer than the parts we visited. One of the most important industrial centers is east of Istanbul on the Black sea. The food was excellent and varied in all the places we visited. ( We especially enjoyed ... read more

Middle East » Saudi Arabia » Riyadh April 16th 2008

Well, I've been here now in Saudi Arabia for just over six weeks. It feels like such a short time ago that Jamara and I stepped off the plane here in Riyadh only to be dropped off at an empty villa at 10.30pm with no one to direct our questions to and no idea of where we were to go the following day or how we were to get there. Over the last six weeks we've managed to take a trip into the desert to look at the beautiful red sands and amazing landscape that surrounds it. We've attended parties within the Australian and American Embassies. We've done LOADS of shopping in countless shopping malls over here. We've gotten into trouble off the Muttawa (religious police) for having our hair uncovered. We've gone desert diamond hunting, ... read more

Arrived in Dubai @ 2.30am local time, the benifit of being an NZ citizen made it easy to pass thru customs and obtain a 60 Visa for UAE. Slept in today then have just had a look around Dubai - off to a local indian place for dinner, plenty of Ex-Pats here, lots to see and do - everything is just on a massive scale. The three star hotel I'm staying in has 6 night clubs attached, rooms are big and confortable, the exchange rate is good comming from NZ. Will spend a bit more time tommorrow checking out the sights, then head to Oman. today is wednesday , but is actually treated as a friday, with thursday and friday being the weekend, so plenty of people out on the town tonight!! off to dinner...... read more
