When the ferry landed in Marmaris, Turkey I still hadn’t figured out where I was going. I didn’t have a map of Marmaris, so I had no idea where Marmaris’ ottogar was. I was not really in the mood to go into town and get a map, so I picked a main road, hoisted my bag and started walking. It was about an hour later when I spotted a bus pulling into a parking area in front of me. During my walk I had narrowed my possible destinations down to three, but I still wasn’t sure which I wanted to see the most. Luckily, none of the busses in Marmaris were going to any of my three chosen destinations. I settled on one bound for Izmir, on Turkey’s West Coast. From there I would be able ... read more

Hello hello hello. Well 3 days in Dubai and what can I say. Hmm... there is a lot of construction going on out here. I mean A LOT. I knew there would be some, but it's seriously incredible. These guys build Canary Wharf for breakfast and then double it for lunch and build 10 golf courses on it for dinner. I've taken hundreds of pictures of half done buildings to try and capture this fact, but I can't do it justice and so I've only added a few. The Burj Dubai The tallest building in the world. No one knows the final height - its kept top secret because a rival prince is also building one further up Dubai - they're having a little competition to see who can build the tallest building! Its rumoured to ... read more

11 AM I am a worrier. At home I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and start mulling over things—work or finances usually—and can’t get back to sleep. I thought it would be different here. A few bumps getting settled and then we’re essentially on a year-long vacation, right? What’s to worry about? Early on, Betsy and I decided that we were going to homeschool Zach. Why not public school? Well, naturally, there was the language problem: Zach doesn’t know Hebrew. But more important, we had heard horror stories about the Israeli public school system. Expatriates reported that discipline is lax and the culture is extremely violent. Students are disrespectful and won’t listen to teachers. Bullying is common and tolerated—both of students and teachers! Students even assault teachers in the classroom. (We’d heard ... read more

Al-Salam Alaykum from Jordan everyone! I have been here for a week now and I thought that it was about time to fill you in the happenings here as I sit in my apartment awaiting the first day of classes tomorrow. Starting from the beginning... My flight was great as flights go. I was one of the nine of so white people on the plane, the rest were Arabs and most from Jordan. I got to sit next to a sweet little lady going to Damascus and we chatted in Arabic on and off the whole flight which was a great warm up for getting into Jordan itself. After a 10 hour flight, fitful sleep and two meals, we landed in Amman. The majority of the young English speakers on the plane quickly grouped up and ... read more

We have included in this entry a map where you can see our journey of the first 19 days in Iran. Just click on the map to the left. Yazd Although we are on one of the different branches of the Silk Road since we reached Central Anatolia in Turkey we have not yet written a lot about it. Not only Silvan and Annamaria traveled to Yazd but also the probably best known Silk Road traveler: Marco Polo. He passed Yazd in the 13th century and described the city as "a very fine and splendid city and a center of commerce". Marco Polo was much more a traveler than a merchant. Only travelers with a sense of adventure (700 years ago, not necessary anymore today) traveled the whole Silk Road from Europe to China and eventually ... read more

Time has been passing very rapidly here in Istanbul. With only two whole days left, I figure I should recap about some of our adventures. We had our fourth test on Turkish Secularism and Democracy. Friday, brought a friend and I to Galata Tower, and its spectacular views of Istanbul. Eating on the streets off of Taksim square is always interesting, as the proprietors of all restaurants try to convince you that their establishment is the finest. On Saturday the entire group deemed it necessary to visit the famous Istanbul Archeological Museum, located in the old city. The museum hosted thousands of artifacts from the ancient world, ranging from the rule of the pharaohs, Alexander the Great, The Romans, The Persians, and everything in between. If one were to spend time reading and seeing everything in ... read more

The Friedlands Pictures of the Friedlands are below. I am so blessed to still be connected to this family. I have known them since I was a girl of 12. I used to babysit them, and here they are... all grown up! It is so much fun to have friends from so long ago and to see how we all mature and grow. Building life-long friendships is priceless. Some pictures are of Stephen (the second oldest) winning his award for Valor in the Lebanese War. The Burden of Israel "The burden of Israel is divided between those who fight, and those who pray." This is a quote from an Israeli that I met recently. When creating Israel, the government decided that the citizens had two choices: they could go to a Yeshiva and spend their ... read more
