This update might not be so organized, and there may not be spaces between words where they should be (the keyboard at the internet cafe isn't so good), but that's okay because God is good and we are all learning a lot! Since the last update, a lot has happened, both good times and hard times. We started our backpacker ministry in Dahab and it was great. We met some really great people (including the people mentioned in the last update) and also two people from California who were on a birthright trip. They wound up travelling with up to Petra Jordan, but more about that in a bit. While in Dahab, we met one of our first hard times. We were told that two of our teammates would have to leave to go back to ... read more

In typical Casey Farin fashion, whenever things seem like they should start getting better, they get worse first. And I usually just respond by laughing. Yesterday morning I woke up with my right eye crusted shut. Pinkeye. My suitemate Debbie woke up a little later and looked in the mirror at her eye all red and goopy and, flustered, says, "I have pinkeye!" So at least we both had it. We ended up going to a doctor who spoke very very minimal English and somehow conveyed to him that we had pinkeye, that our throats hurt, we were congested, and had been coughing and sneezing. After the doctor looked in Debbie's throat, she asked him, "Beseder?" meaning "Okay?" and he responded, "Lo." meaning "No." Pretty much the story of our lives. I laughed really hard. We ... read more

My father said that my updates were like watching the travel channel, so he gave me a great idea... I'm going to start sending updates and pictures whenever I can. So yesterday I arrived into Rome after flying all night, the night before I left I only got 3 1/2 hours of sleep, of course I did too much, typical of me, but what can I say... And of course typical of me too is to pack too much (even though Dennis told me a couple of times to pack as light as I could), Dennis I wish I would have listened to you! What a pain in the ass, but because I was packing up my house too and was 90% done but not 100% done packing so I did not have anywhere to leave ... read more

The past few days have been really stormy- we've lost power for 2-3 hours a day for the past two days while it's been snowing in Jerusalem. Last night I studied for my Ulpan test by the light of my computer because the power was out and I didn't want to walk all the way to the 24-hour coffee shop/restaurant where I spend a lot of time. The thing is, Coffee to Go is really close to my dorm, it was just miserable out. My cell phone broke yesterday. I put my purse on a chair, my purse slid off the chair, my cell phone fell out of my purse and landed on the ground. It turned off and I tried to turn it back on but everything was backwards. Then it turned off and wouldn't ... read more

So I've been in Israel for only two weeks but it feels like a lot longer. Our flight took off on the 14th from JFK and we got here on the 15th. It was a group flight, so a lot of Americans from my program were on the flight, and I ended up sitting with two of them, Jodi and Mark. Being at the airport was like a mad dash to meet people as fast as possible, and we were already talking loudly amongst ourselves when someone from El Al came over and yelled at us to get on the plane so it could take off. We got to our dorms and dragged our luggage upstairs (no elevators... thank G-d I'm on the second floor!) only to be met by dirty, dusty, cold rooms. A lot ... read more

When I visit someplace new, I like to see and I like to eat. For the eating part, I go for street food: cheap, tasty, and local. Here that means falafel and shwarma (the Israeli version of gyros, minus the yogurt sauce, naturally, which wouldn’t be kosher). More about them some other time. Here I want to talk about the bakeries. It’s hard to find a stand-alone bakery in the States anymore, and I don’t even remember many from my childhood. All that remains of bakeries these days is a small corner in the big-box supermarkets. Here bakeries are as numerous as Starbucks in Seattle. It’s important to have goals in life. One of my goals is to sample each bakery. Bakeries stock a number of items, some of which are familiar and some of which ... read more

Shalom y'all. In Israel now, and the first few days have been quite an experience. And it all started at the Newark International. Checking in began with a short round of questioning, mainly your reason for traveling and a series of leading questions to find out if you are Jewish. After informing them I was a goy, they let me check my bags, and told me they would meet me at the gate to search my carry-on bag. So I gave them my bag and waited. There was quite a group of us, all but one, as far as I know, non-Jewish. I was told to expect this, and given my facial hair, I sort took it as a given. A few people got their bags and boarded. Security then told me I would not ... read more

Ok, I just have to show you what we found today on our eggplant plants: gi-bleeping-normous caterpillars. They look just like the tobacco/tomato hornworm caterpillars I’ve used for years in my Advanced Ecology course, except on steroids. These are apparently Acherontia atropos, or “Death’s head hawkmoth” larvae, so-named for the skull pattern on the back of the thorax of the adult moth. We have 4 of these 10-12 cm long caterpillars, looking pretty close to pupation size. Wikipedia says that when threatened, the caterpillars will thrash at both ends and make rapid clicks with their mandibles, and even bite, as Kaitlin can attest. Zach picked one up and carried it around for quite a while without eliciting any of these responses. Apparently the caterpillar either didn’t realize how threatening Zach actually is, or perhaps it was ... read more

"Attention ladies and gentlemen! We regret to inform you that the pilot has been unable to make it in today and we cannot supply another so Im afraid this flight is now cancelled. Please go down collect your luggage and make your way to the Alitalia service desk to arrange another flight" This is definitely not the way I wanted the day to start. My flight being cancelled is one thing but the problem is I had to connect in Milan to Tel Aviv so that wasn't going to happen I guess. I avoided waiting for my bags to be dragged off the plane and went straight down to organise other plans. It paid off as after I arrived and had my booking underway, a big group of other people showed up, huffing and puffing at ... read more
