The Nomad

After spending two years in Europe, I've shifted my attention to South America.
I'm currently living in Rio de Janeiro and will be here indefinitely teaching English.
Hopefully I'll be able to get around to see some of the continent.

"Attention ladies and gentlemen! We regret to inform you that the pilot has been unable to make it in today and we cannot supply another so Im afraid this flight is now cancelled. Please go down collect your luggage and make your way to the Alitalia service desk to arrange another flight" This is definitely not the way I wanted the day to start. My flight being cancelled is one thing but the problem is I had to connect in Milan to Tel Aviv so that wasn't going to happen I guess. I avoided waiting for my bags to be dragged off the plane and went straight down to organise other plans. It paid off as after I arrived and had my booking underway, a big group of other people showed up, huffing and puffing at ... read more

Saudades do Brasil!

Sorry for the lateness of this blog, I've been a bit lazy. Still, better late than never. Rio is an amazing city but I did manage to leave a few times. The first time was just after Brazil's thrashing of Equador when Carla and I headed to Morro de São Paulo in the Brazilian state of Bahia. We caught a flight to the city of Salvador and then a boat to the Island. We met a local who was going on our boat and said, "I hope you don't get sea sick, because someone always does" We were OK but there were a couple of victims as the boat rolled over the large waves. It wasn't the best trip and after a while we started to feel a little sick as well. However, we made it ... read more

What do you do when you meet someone who lives one the other side of the world? What do you do when you hate your job so much, you cant wait to tell your boss to go and... "pleasure himself"?? Well you jump on a plane and fly to Rio de Janeiro of course... I met Carla, who's a Carioca native, in Berlin and really hit it off. Since I've always wanted to go to Brazil anyway, I thought this is the best excuse. After nearly missing my connection in Madrid and actually passing out on the plane from lack of food and sleep, I arrived in Rio late on a Thursday afternoon. Seeing Carla again was great and our first stop was a restaurant in an area called Botafogo, which had excellent views of Botafogo ... read more

Putting the Ice back into Iceland

The old childhood joke goes "Greenland is all ice and Iceland is all green." Well I don't know, maybe Greenland is all ice but Iceland isn't without it either. However, for a country that nips at heels of the Arctic Circle, it shouldn't be a great surprise. We arrived in Reykjavík, the world's most notherly capital late at an airport a long way from the city so by the time we got into town it was really late and a few locals were falling out of bars and heading home. We were dropped off somewhere in the centre and given dodgy directions to our hostel by the bus driver. We couldn't find it so asked some drunk locals who had been out and clearly drinking heavily. They were more than happy to direct us to our ... read more

Back in 2000 when I left school we had, like every other school in Oz, a Formal. That grand evening when you and your class mates dress to the nines and try to act like adults. My partner for that evening was Sarah. She was a close friend of mine at school and as it turned out we lost contact after that and I never saw her again. That is until I get a random email one day late last year from her. We began to chat and it turns out she is getting married to an Irish bloke and now living with him in Dublin, Ireland. It was quite a coincidence as I was living in England and so of course planned a quick trip over the to see her. Other things came up and ... read more

It's been a busy time for me here in Berlin. I've done and seen so much time has flown by. So what have I been up to? 1) The Language The main reason for me to relocate to Berlin was to learn German. I was lucky (or unlucky) enough to be born in an English speaking country which has it's good and bad sides. The good side is that English is pretty much the worlds most widely spoken language which generally makes travel easy. Of course, I have found that if your in, say, downtown Minsk, English is about as useful as Manchu and unless you speak Russian, your screwed. Make no mistake I don't plan on rushing out and learning Russian but I feel a little knowledge of many languages goes along way, hence the ... read more

Traveling 101; Get locals to work for you! This is one of my travel "rules" (more accurately, guidelines) If you don't know something, a local will, hence, get info from them or get them to organise things for you. "Get" is a strong work, maybe persuade... hmm no too manipulative, well lets call it "acquiring the help of the knowledge laden locals". So what am I talking about? Well I don't really know half the time, however on the train station in Copenhagen Airport was a girl. She was looking like one of those people who could tell you anything you wanted to know but had never had a chance to share her wealth of knowledge. A hidden eagerness to be a chaperon of kinds was laying just below the surface so I approached her. Weighed ... read more

We walked over the border and hitched a bus. The bus was heading for Ioannina, the largest hub in the area, so we had no choice but to go there. Once we arrived we sussed out the buses headed to our destination of Kalambaka and found one heading there at 3pm, 3 hours away. We set up temporary camp at a near-by restaurant where the waiter didn't speak English but did speak German. We get some food and wait. I soon grow tired of waiting and thought I might go for a wander to check out a castle that's apparently in the area. I check it out and head back. Ordinarily I would be impressed by this ancient walled old city jutting out into the lake with snow capped mountains looming above, but that day, I ... read more

Previously, on Camo's Blog; "When is the next bus to Albania?" "There is no bus, you can't get to Albania from here!" The Blog continues; I put my head in my hands. Everyone we had asked had said there would most likely be services from here. I guess most likely isn't good enough. A glimmer of hope breaks through when the man says "BUT!" I look up like a dog in hope of receiving a treat. "If you want to go to Ulcinj (Ool-sin), there is a bus at 6am from there to Shkodra in Albania and you can easily get down to Tirana from there." The problem was it would take several hours to get to Ulcinj and it would mean spending an extra night there waiting for a bus, not to mention the early ... read more

After a long train ride via Croatia (go figure) we arrived in Belgrade. Emma had a hostel in mind so we jumped the terrifying, rattly tram and headed for the top of the city. After a bit of wandering around we finally found it but to our dismay, it was full. The next hour and a half saw us wandering around the city in search of accommodation. We got lucky as we passed one hostel that no one had seem to heard of. It was pretty ordinary but good enough. I was somewhat looking forward to getting to Belgrade as I had heard good things and I wanted to get the other side of the story about the siege of Sarajevo. The problem was that Belgrade is, in my humble opinion, a shit hole. It stinks, ... read more
