Ok…so when is it ok to stop being a momma's boy? Is there a certain age cut-off, a significant point in your life where you say "Ok Mom…I'm (insert age here) now and I want to be my own person without you in my life all the time" or how about "Mom, I know that you love me dearly, but really…I can do my own laundry and cook my own food and hey can you just stop trying to fix me with with Elisheva, Vardit, Orr, or whoever else you seem to have grown attached to?" See here's the reasoning behind this rant or actually, a look into what I have now come to realize happens all over Israel at any given moment. Now I know that Jewish mothers no matter what age, country or continent ... read more

A week has past since our last trip. Apologizes for not writing sooner, but I have been on two (!) field trips since and papers are due and well its that time in the semester. And I'm loving it. I'll give you a quick overview of my four days touring the Negev, visiting the sights, learning the environmental issues and how they affect the communities there. We leave Ketura early early Wednesday for Machtesh Ramon, a crater north west of our home. We arrived at the crater, drank coffee, learned a bit about the geology, and played some games. We spent the rest of that morning hiking through the machtesh. A highlight was teaching dahn mu do on top of a hill, with the whole machtesh below us (talk about energy!). After a series of lectures ... read more

We are not the sole occupants of our apartment. We share the space with some local tenants. One of the less appealing was a 12 cm (5 inch) centipede we found crawling on the stairs shortly after we arrived. After Betsy snapped a couple of mugshots, I caught it in a yogurt container and released it outside. More charming are the geckos. They are up to 10 cm (4 inches) long and have special hairs on their feet that permit them to adhere firmly to surfaces, so you’re just as likely to find them on the walls as on the ceiling. I’m told that these geckos have break-away tails. This is a defense mechanism. If a predator grabs the tail, it will snap off and start wiggling, distracting the predator while the business end of the ... read more

(As dictated to Betsy.) I’m happy with how my Hebrew is going. Every night we have treasure hunts or a scavenger hunt. In the treasure hunt, I read clues in script in Hebrew and I go to the place and find a treat (gummi treats, chocolate, etc.). In the scavenger hunt, my mom gives me one clue, which leads to another clue, which leads to another clue, and after a lot of clues I find a piece of candy or a dentist’s worst nightmare (not healthy snacks!). Here’s an example of a clue: ".תסתכל על המדף בסלון" (Look on the shelf in the living room.), but it’s written in script instead of block letters. My parents and I talk a lot in Hebrew. I can talk about my piano (איפה המוסיקה שלי? על הפסנתר ; Where ... read more

I like to cook. It’s my responsibility to shop for and prepare our meals. One of my favorite pastimes is to take the bus down to the shouk and stroll among the fruit and vegetable stands, comparing prices and quality. I buy what looks good and bring it back to make dinner. The produce here is amazing—everything is so fresh. And though it has cooled off—it’s been in the low 20’s Celsius (low 70’s Fahrenheit) for the past week or so—the market is still full of summer vegetables: zucchini, eggplants, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers (red, yellow, and green). One of the surprises for me is how much more creative and enjoyable cooking has become. Part of it is the availability of fresh ingredients, but it’s more than that. At home, I’m surrounded by a lot of ... read more

A few weeks ago, shortly after I wrote the post about how I was finally feeling happy and well adjusted here, I dreamt that I was back at work teaching. Usually these kinds of dreams are nightmares, at least they are for me. In one of the recurring ones, I’m standing in the hallway talking with my colleagues between classes when I suddenly realize that I’m completely naked. I desperately want a towel, but there’s nothing close by. This latest dream, however, was different. I felt a palpable sense of relief to be back at work. I was happy to be there. Perhaps I am still adjusting. My only experience in the field of education is in the US, so I have been curious to see how schooling differs here. In some ways, the US and ... read more

Well, finally, after a several month hiatus from blogging, while I was back home in the States, I have returned to Israel and to my blog. Its hard to believe, but I've already been in Israel a month. Part of me feels like I just got here, and part of me feels like I've been here for such a long time already. The last few weeks have been spent settling in, and taking care of lots of beaurocratic stuff for my citizenship. So let me start at the beginning. On October 10 I finally arrived back in Israel. My flight was delayed 2 hours, after we had already boarded the plane, so we were all stuck on the plane an extra couple hours. Luckily, I was so exhausted that I slept through all the waiting and ... read more

This is what Ayelah said during our Peace, and Environmental Leadership Seminar (PELS) this morning. A cute, curlie haired, small and athletic tel avivan with striking eye makeup. The desert is your test. It is my test. It tests us. There is nothing more vulnerable than living in the desert. It does not forgive. This i have found. I have wore myself out to my bare bones. I have soaked all this in like a sponge, and am sitting here, full, exhausted. I have argued about the conflict, I have planned a project for youth environmental leadership during a seminar of Palestinian and Israeli youth, I have taught Dahn Yoga to my peers (they want me to teach a class every night! wow!), I have baked cakes for birthdays, I have read articles on environmental mediation ... read more

Hey guys sorry it has been so long since I have written. I have been busy and havent gotten around to writing but I had some free time before I go to bed. So its already November, wow.On one hand its hard to believe Ive been here for so long and on the other hand its hard to believe i have so much time left. I will be flying home at 1am on December 21st and should be in boston at around 2:30 pm. So, I have been here for roughly 13 weeks. Throughout that time I have gone through a lot of emotions. At the beginning I absolutley adored Israel and loved every minute I was here. Now, the program hasnt been everything we had hoped and the city has lost its glow. Now, for ... read more
