When travelling, plans can change suddenly and drastically. After leaving Dahab, we headed up to the popular resort of Sharm El Sheikh to meet up with my parents for a week of snorkelling and lazing around the beach and pool. The day before we were due to meet them at the airport, I checked e mail to find that my dad had been taken into hospital with a kidney infection and subsequent blood poisoning, so they had to cancel their trip (hope you are feeling better, dad!). As we had already done the major highlight of the area, snorkelling and diving on the magnificent reefs of Ras Mohammad National Park, we decided to move on. This decision was helped by the fact that our accomodation was very basic, mosquito-ridden, and overpriced, and the only transport out ... read more

Just fresh back from a weekend in Tel Aviv... with a few stories. On Friday, my good friend Dana (graduated Cornell in 06', is here on a fullbright, and besides having these wonderful credentials, is an amazing friend and housemate!), went up to Tel Aviv to see a concert. The concert was this funk/drum and bass band that performed in this hidden venue right near Yafo. The Apples. Check them out. On Friday evening, before the concert, Dana and I visited Dana's family in Rishon L'tziyon. Dana has this wonderfully sweet grandfather who is married to, how do I say it a bit nicer, em, not the nicest woman in the world. This is Dana's stepgrandmother, (family through marriage, Dana wants all of us to know) who is a bit of a grump. Rather, a bit ... read more

(As dictated to Betsy.) In school, I’m learning Hebrew and my friends are mostly talking to me in Hebrew but if I don’t understand they talk to me in English. One of my friends talked to my dad and said I’m learning Hebrew really well. I have a tutor named Yuval. He’s really nice and my teacher doesn’t think he’s doing enough. My school teacher wants me to do other stuff with her and not so much with him. My teacher’s making me read a book in Hebrew called “Alexander the Great, the Small" ("אלכסנדר הגדול הקטן"). With Yuval, I’m also learning to conjugate verbs and know colors and numbers, and we have signs on lots of things around the house that I’m learning. I went to a party on a boat for a bat mitzvah ... read more

It’s pomegranate season. I just finished a large one. I like that they have lots of seeds—you have to eat them slowly. No instant gratification as with seedless grapes. The shouk is full of really fresh vegetables and fruits, all seasonal. Lately I’ve been busing there every couple of days, buying what looks good, and then cooking dinner based on what I’ve purchased. I’m glad to be here—finally. For the first five weeks I felt disconnected and adrift without a purpose. It’s no surprise actually. We left more than our jobs in Tacoma. We also abandoned a familiar city and our social network. I can see now that there is comfort even in something as mundane as a shopping routine: knowing where to shop, how to get there, what you will find, and how much it ... read more

I must say, each day is big. Real big. Classes have started, and I have to say they are now full on. Lets see... where to start. How about here: Last Friday, we all took a "field trip" down to Eilat for a ecological boat ride around the gulf of Eilat. Eilat, as a city, is not much to speak of. In fact, it is overpopulated and touristy, and dont even start me on how detrimental its overdevelopment is to the environment (I am, afterall, studying the environment here!). But the coral reefs in Eilat are some of the best in the world. And its amazing, as this one body of water connects four countries. From the boat, we were floating in the middle of Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Man, that is loaded. After ... read more

Today, we went to the Israel Embassy in Jordon to see about a travel visa for my husband. We put our names on a list and waited to be called. This is out on the street in front of the embassy. There are many people waiting behind the cement blocks erected for barriers. There are to armed Jordanian soldiers here along with different men who come and go reading lists and looking at papers. They must work for the embassy. My husband's name was called and we pass throught the barrier and walked a few meters to another waiting area. This time two rows of benches with a sun cover were provided. Men in one row and women in another. "This looked like a sign of hospitality" I thought to myself. My thought was soon proven ... read more

Hey all, Internet connections here seems to be few and far between... plus, it seems there is always something else luring me from the computer... I now can use my laptop (hurray!) in some places... so I am not confinded to the bunker :-). But I still dont have access in my room, (nor do I yet have a desk on which to put it!), but all in time, I know. I realize that many of you are in the dark about what I am doing, and where I am doing it. So this entry I will try to explain what's going on in my corner of the earth. I am currently living, until mid January, on a small kibbutz in the Arava desert, right near the Jordanian border. It is a tiny oasis with some ... read more

Hello All! And finally... I have arrived, at least to the sight of my first home for the next three months. Kibbutz Ketura, a conservative kibbutz in the middle of the Arava desert, a small oasis amid kilometers of rocky yellow sand. Let me give you my exact location right now: I am sitting, wet hair (my first kibbutz shower!) in my pygamas, typing on a rusty and dusty (my hands are grey now!) keyboard in a bunker covered with murals of the Negev. Yes, I am yet to have computer access from my room, in fact, my poor little macintosh does not seem to want to connect to PC friendly wireless. Alas. All in time, they say. L'at l'at. Also all in time: well, lets just say I am lucky enough to be in the ... read more

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round. Busses are interesting here in Israel. First you have the 2 main ones, which are called Dan and Egged respectively. Now, there's a new company called Kevim which to me seem like much nicer busses as far as public transportation goes. However, their lines are very limited and only go to places within Tel Aviv and the periphery towns such as Petach Tikva, Or Yehuda and some others. But ok, not to bore you with bus schedules but I just wanted to write that it's a subculture - those who ride public transportation and those who do not. I fall into the first category since I have sold my car back in the states and didn't bring my baby (my motorcycle - not the ... read more
