I'm a firefighter and EMT moving from the United States to Israel in 2007.

About to embark on some world travels and find out who I really am or who I want to be.

This should be an interesting time...

Hello, Shalom, Salam, Bonjour! Besides being on crutches which is not so much fun in my life, I tend to keep myself busy with writing. Not that you would actually know that from my horrible habit of not uploading new blogs, but rest assured, I do write on a fairly consistent basis. Now, because of my injury, that seems like all I have time to do! :) and :( Anyhow, one of my newest writing endeavors involves writing for Instablogs which is a concept based out of India where many bloggers or "Citizen Journalists" come together and report on different news items in the world. The tagline is that Everyone has an opinion. Now if that isn't the place for me and my writing, then I don't know where it is. Which speaking of, I love ... read more

So...funny story. Yesterday I was walking towards home in a semi-happy daze after going to a job interview (probably won't get the job but I had fun in the interview anyways!) I then see a fire truck passing by, which always confirms to me that because I focus a lot of my energy on the FD, this is why I see it everywhere. I'm walking along and these 2 children ask me to help them get their basketball down from the rooftop where it got stuck by throwing a rock at it. I say Sure why not (this was my 1st mistake) and I throw the rock (2nd mistake). It gets stuck right on the edge of the roof, so I climb up on the small fence - we're talking about 2 feet here - no ... read more

I love finding other English speaking bloggers in Israel. It's like a game of hide and seek and makes me feel slightly less crazy when something happens to me in this country and I look around and happen to be the old non-Hebrew speaking person on the planet at the moment. Saying this, I have my few favorites. What War Zone?? is this hilarious guy Benji Lovett's blog. I had the very interesting and somewhat stalkerish experience of getting to meet him at the Taglit Purim party held in Tel Aviv this year. Not only have I been following this guys blog for just about a year, but I actually got to meet him. I recognized him because everytime I log into his blog, I see his picture so that when the time actually came to ... read more

This is not a country made for waiting. In any form. Which I find ironic considering that technically the Jewish people have been waiting eons, I'm talking biblical years, for Israel to come to be. So maybe in a way, the lack of patience of the Israelis is a form of rebellion against time which is constantly threating to end. I find it fascinating that on certain days of the year, such as Yom Ha'zichron and Yom Ha'shoah, the whole country will stop what they are doing and stand still as a whole for the duration of the siren. It's a collective time when this country, who so dearly hates waiting for anything, stops and stands completely and utterly still. There is no screaming, no annoyed yells of “Hayiti po!” (I was here!), no cutting in ... read more

Alright...I have a very quick gripe. Today in my mailbox I recieved a piece of mail from my old bank in the United States and upon looking very closely, it is addressed to Jessica N Edwaid" What the hell is that?? Just because I live in the Middle East, I have to have an Arab sounding name? My name is Edwards, that is a very English sounding name...nowhere even close to Edwaid!?! Not cool PNC Bank. Not cool.... read more

Updates, updates. Life is interesting and in the interest of not being too hippy-dippy, I'll try to keep my self in control. I'm home. Home as in Israel - not that far off place over the Atlantic ocean I used to call home. That my dear friends (by the way - 1 more new loyal reader Hey!! Hi!!) is what I used to call home. Not anymore. What's absolutly ridiculous however, is how I seem to have melded into the Israeli culture that when I went back to the states, certain things that for the first 23 years of my life were considered normal, were either completely backwards or just "foreign" to me. Take for instance American money. For the life of me I couldn't fit it in my wallet without having to fold it in ... read more

Alright, alright. I give. I suck at updating well…anything that doesn’t pay me money. Which point in fact, my other job does. So here we go. Update #1: I’m not in Israel right now. Surprise!! I’m actually in the states, in my old hometown to be exact. And to be completely honest….I’m over it. And it’s only been a week. Now I know they say that “there’s no place like home” but well, I’m ready to come back to Israel, and what makes it worse, is that I still have over a month to go. Oh yes…because in my zealousness to come back and shove a whole year of being gone into a great amount, I neglected one small idea……. The Poconos is boring and I didn’t really like it here to begin with so why ... read more

Anger management and inefficiency are the tag words of these next two blogs. I have decided to write about these phenomena’s in two separate blogs, not only because it’s a pretty lengthy subject, but also to well umm…give me 2 blogs because only God knows when the next time I actually sit down and write another one will be. Hey…life happens. +++++ What never fails to amaze, amuse and horrify me at the same time is the lack of utter patience and anger management that Israelis have. It’s actually been researched and documented however that Israelis tend to be more emotionally healthy because they express their feelings (whether or not one likes it actually) and therefore do not bottle up their emotions and cause emotional distress (for themselves…other people? Not the same case). There are spectrum's ... read more

Ok…so when is it ok to stop being a momma's boy? Is there a certain age cut-off, a significant point in your life where you say "Ok Mom…I'm (insert age here) now and I want to be my own person without you in my life all the time" or how about "Mom, I know that you love me dearly, but really…I can do my own laundry and cook my own food and hey can you just stop trying to fix me with with Elisheva, Vardit, Orr, or whoever else you seem to have grown attached to?" See here's the reasoning behind this rant or actually, a look into what I have now come to realize happens all over Israel at any given moment. Now I know that Jewish mothers no matter what age, country or continent ... read more

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round. Busses are interesting here in Israel. First you have the 2 main ones, which are called Dan and Egged respectively. Now, there's a new company called Kevim which to me seem like much nicer busses as far as public transportation goes. However, their lines are very limited and only go to places within Tel Aviv and the periphery towns such as Petach Tikva, Or Yehuda and some others. But ok, not to bore you with bus schedules but I just wanted to write that it's a subculture - those who ride public transportation and those who do not. I fall into the first category since I have sold my car back in the states and didn't bring my baby (my motorcycle - not the ... read more
