Snow :)
Winter time here I come...its cold as hell. -7C when I landed. Alright, alright. I give. I suck at updating well…anything that doesn’t pay me money. Which point in fact, my other job does.
So here we go.
Update #1: I’m not in Israel right now. Surprise!! I’m actually in the states, in my old hometown to be exact. And to be completely honest….I’m over it. And it’s only been a week.
Now I know they say that “there’s no place like home” but well, I’m ready to come back to Israel, and what makes it worse, is that I still have over a month to go. Oh yes…because in my zealousness to come back and shove a whole year of being gone into a great amount, I neglected one small idea…….
The Poconos is boring and I didn’t really like it here to begin with so why in the world did I think my feelings would change just by being gone a year?
However…let’s look on the positive side. I live in the country and my fellow Israelis don’t seem to have a concrete idea of what “country” is. They tell me, “oh we have kibbutzim and moshavim” or “we have the Ramat HaGolan!” but let me inform you…
y’all ain’t seen no country yet.
In my town (or is it a couple of towns all shoved into one area called the Poconos? Yup. It’s not one specific town) it’s not unusual to see:
Country Fritz
This is country fritz and he was kind enough to allow me to take a picture with him...that man is a war hero. He was awesome.
- 1) Pickup trucks driving down the street with huge tires, Hemi engines and country music pumping from the stereo.
- 2) Bars with karaoke with all ages singing and 90% of the song selections are by country singers such as Johnny Cash, Travis Tritt, Dixie Chicks, Reba McEntire and various other down home songs.
- 3) People with accents that rival the deep southern Alabama, North and South Carolina
- 4) People who say “ma’am” and people who call their moms, “momma” such as yours truly.
- 5) Farms…trees…lakes…deer…wild turkey….and well….nature in all its glory, all the friggin time.
- 6) People who drink beer out of pitchers, people who wear cowboy hats, people who wear cowboy boots and people who chew SKOAL.
So this is how I grew up most of my life. Now, I don’t chew straw and I’m not backwards thinking (in fact I think I’m pretty sane compared to some of the illiterate and toothless people who live here) but I am proud of my country roots.
I’m loud when I want to be, I drink beer and hard vodka, I’m in the fire department, I say ya’ll, and I have an accent that my friend from
My momma's house
I didn't grow up here, but this is where I'm staying while in the Poconos Alabama says is pretty authentic. Plus, I say momma and love the country. I want to drive a pickup truck and watch/listen to country music no matter what part of the world I’m in. I’m attracted to country boys (none of those pretty boys thankyouverymuch) and certain things such as boys who are in the fire department/police/ambulance turn me on, especially if they drive a truck or at least have country music playing on their radio.
So….
“Talk Southern to me baby”
and I’m yours.
Update #2 I miss Israel. In a big huge way. As in, I want to cut my vacation here in the states short so that I can go back to Israel sooner.
I have come to the conclusion that just by being here only a week that I am in love with Israel. I mean I knew it before, but now I know it for real. Israel is where I want to be right now and I miss it more than I thought I ever would.
My life isn’t here anymore, and yes while I was born and raised (literally) in the States and yes, I still have my USA citizenship, this year has been one
Kitchen
The beautiful new kitchen in my 2nd home here in the Poconos - I helped build that house thanks. of the best years of my life.
I have amazing friends, some of the best people I know are there, a terrific apartment, a city I love living in, and while I may be frustrated at certain points, I know it will all fit into place. The first year is the hardest, but this I promise you I’m not giving up.
People asked me if I was coming back when I told them I was going to visit the states…I think I must have looked at them like they had 2 heads. What kind of question is that?? I mean, it’s a legitimate question but at the same time, it’s ludicrious. Do you really think I give up that easy?
Honey, you don’t know me very well then. So yes, I’ll be back. I can’t wait to be back. I miss the annoying way that Israel works sometimes and I miss the survival Hebrew I have to use everyday, but I am hitting the ulpan hard while I’m here (I already went through 2 chapters!) and I’ll be speaking Hebrew all the time once my friend, Reut, who is coming here with me in a few
Real Women Fight Fire
Would you really expect anything less from me to put on my motorcycle? weeks, since she refuses to speak English with me, so I have to get up to par. And above all, I miss my friends and my everyday, sometimes annoying, and sometimes down right pissing me off, everyday life there. Because I’m happy there.
Update #3: Crazy, small things that I missed about the states:
*1) Being able to read my Chinese food fortune in English and automatically knowing what it said.
*2) Febreeze - that wonderful spray that neutralizes odors
*3) Going into a bar and getting hit on in English automatically and getting stupid pickup lines other than “so…I hear you’re speaking English” (award those morons the obvious man of the year award there)
*4) Picking up the phone and it’s automatically in English…or hell, even my bills I can read in .2 seconds
*5) Driving - it was weird for an hour, but now I’m used to it again (not that I can’t drive in Israel, but you know what I mean)
*6) Country Music Television (CMT) is on whenever I want it to be and hell country music is on in general. They don’t have that in Israel.
And I’m sure there’s more…but
Speaking of my mom
She likes to ride shopping carts...she's insane. Wonder why I am the way I am? Look no further. for now that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Enjoy some pictures
Till next time….oh and I’ll be back in Israel on February 25th.
