Not too much has been going on here. I've been walking to the beach and reading and studying there. It's really relaxing there- we found a restaurant on the beach that has couches that are long enough to lounge on, and we go there and get a drink and read and relax. Yesterday our program took us to Jerusalem for the day. It was about 15 degrees colder than it had been the day before and it rained on and off all day. We went to the Kotel and around the Western Wall where it meets the southern end and talked about a lot of the history of Jerusalem that we talked about on Birthright and in my Ancient Israel class. Then we went to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where we saw graffiti from ... read more

It's been a while since the whole team has had input on what the update says, so here we go! Kieran aka "Keys" or "Kiwi": Hi! Having a blast round here soaking up the atmosphere and being able to cross the road without 50 million near death experiences per square cm (that might be a slight exageration...) I have been a tad sick but my health is on the ride even though I'm still coughing so hard I want to laugh at myself. :-P It's so awesome hanging out with the backpackers here in the Holy Land, to see the places where Jesus walked with them (the backpackers) and to be able to answer their questions about Christianity; I really feel useful. Oh and something super cool I forgot to mention. We went to a traditional ... read more

Another fantastic day, each day is so different and so wonderful, today was our small group visit to the archives display. This is the only place you can actually see a picture of the prophet founder of the faith - Baha'u'llah and the forerunner the Bab. There was a painting of the Bab, 3 small paintings of Baha'u'llah (approved of by his daughter who said that they were authentic and perfect down to the color of his lips) and a photograph, amazing does not begin to share the emotions I had this morning gazing upon their faces. All I can say is that I was so moved and in those moments the only thing I could do was communicate with my Lord, the rest of the world outside did not exist, there was not a single ... read more

These sorts of signs are in every restroom at Haifa University. The translation for the top one is: “Please! The paper goes into the trash can.” The bottom one says, "Throw the paper into the trash can." We’re not really sure what to make of them. As you can see from the picture, there is a small wastebasket next to the toilet. The wastebasket is almost always empty, just like this one. On the occasions when I have seen discarded paper in the basket, the paper is never … how to say this delicately … streaked with brown. The signs are in both the men’s and the women’s restrooms, which eliminates one obvious possibility. We want to do the right thing with our paper, but we're confused. We’ve asked numerous Israelis to explain the meaning of ... read more

Shalom. So maybe a week ago it snowed in Jerusalem for about 2 days straight. It also snowed once two years ago, but apparently it normally only snows once every ten years. Two days off from Ulpan for what would have been considered flurries in Washington or Jersey. It was an amazing sight though, and I have plenty of pictures. Though we missed two days, we are only able to make up one, this Friday morning, Feb. 8th. Just about everything here, except for a 24hr. coffee chain called Aroma, closes on Friday around 4:30 PM. Some places open up again Saturday, after sunset, around 6 PM. The bureaucracy here is something to be seen. You wait five hours to get a room that they escort you to. There's another office to get a key ... read more

With Australia Day celebrations approaching in Jerusalem, I decided to take a few days off beforehand to tour the Holy Land. A few mates ended up being free as well so we piled into a hire car and headed down to Jerusalem. After a few textbook road trip moments (the highlight being driving through snow without snow chains and proving the car had ABS) we finally made it to Jerusalem. We even managed to fit in a quick snowball fight, much to the amusement of some Indian UN peacekeepers in the area. With two days free Dean, Corey and I headed into the Old City after a well earned sleep in. Though it was my second trip to the Old City it was just as impressive as the last. I cannot help but be affected by ... read more

Allah'u'Abha (this is a greeting that Baha'is use when they meet each other, it means God is Most Glorious) and considering where I am, I could not address you any other way! God is Most Glorious! I can not even begin to describe the unbelievable bounty it is to be here; I've never in my life experienced God on Earth, you know in the "Lords Prayer" "Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven," I can feel it, the bounty, the magnificence, the love, the compassion, the awe, the beauty. You really can feel the spirit of God on earth! If you are receiving this email then I prayed for you in the shrines today. For some reason my pilgrimage got off to a rocky start (which is weird because ... read more

WOAH!! Seriously what a week this has been. It has absolutely flown by and I have had an absolutely AMAZING time. Honestly, I can’t say it more than now that I LOVE MY LIFE. I was sitting on the beach the other day and had a brief few minutes by myself and started a flashbook of pictures in my head of all the places I’ve been and what I’ve seen and put on one of my stupid little smirks. I tried to do the beach thing every day. But it’s not the typical beach weather…it is still winter in Tel Aviv, so its long sleeves and pants on crisp sunny days just soaking up the warmth. Like autumn which is my favorite season. The beaches however are packed! Everyone hangs out on chairs and at the ... read more

I took the train from Tel Aviv to Haifa and arrived into Haifa at 8:59pm on Sunday night. I was told that it would be fine to arrive anytime after 9:00pm on Sunday evening, so this was the best I could do. It was amazing the feeling I got the closer I got to Haifa, I started to look out the window to the east because I knew I would be able to see the Shrine of the Báb soon and in less than a minute I could see the Shrine of the Báb, it was so wonderful, its been over 20 years since I’ve been in Haifa and I could not wait to be there again. It was lit beautifully and it brought me so much happiness. When the train stopped in Haifa and I ... read more

OK, so here I am at the end of my second day in Tel Aviv, it was a wonderful day, I started out, packed up my hostel and then made for the market, I heard from something I read that there was a really nice fruit market, but really it was more like a flee market, I do not need another freakin' thing, oh my gosh... People everywhere, stuff everywhere! Oh but I can't forget to tell you that I started out my morning at a place called "My Coffee Shop," had a great cappuccino and wrote in my journal, then I made my way through the market! Finally I came upon the fresh fruits and vegetables and bread, it was lovely. I stopped for some fresh squeezed OJ which cost me about a dollar and ... read more
