Yes, my liver has been working overtime, since I landed in Iberia - they sure know how to party here ;-) As many of you remember from my last entry, my last night in France was very much a wine infested one, and the train the next day would have been unbearable if it wasn't for the beautiful French countryside that occupied my eyes along the way. With green fields and dinky French villages, the French countryside, I think, is the most beautiful. We even passed a couple of castles, including a fantastical one just outside Lourdes. It's weird how that when crossing the border, you immediately sense a different culture and a different visual setting even though you've only travelled less than a kilometre. The people are different, the language is different and there are ... read more

Luckily we didn’t have an early train this morning. Eliza was up at 6:30, which meant that since it was Jonathan’s turn to get up he only had about 3.5 hours sleep! We left our first house guest, Jonathan's cousin Eric, to see himself off on Monday morning. We had a great visit with him and the boys especially had a lot of fun last night at MachtRock as there were bands on stages all over town (hence the three hours of sleep!) We got out of the house easily and made our way to Brussels to catch our 10:45 train to Paris. There was a French woman and her two kids in front of us and two Chinese businessmen diagonal from me. As we were about to leave a man came up to one of ... read more

Since our first visit to London, Jay and I have been hoping that we could see Spamalot, but it's been such a huge hit we didn't think we could get good seats without paying too much money. On the occasion of Dr. Amber's visit this weekend, we decided to try. One of the open secrets about buying theatre tickets in London is that instead of paying a big fee at Ticketmaster, you can go to the several half-price ticket booths on Leicester Square and get reduced price tickets for the that day's performances. While waiting in line I looked at all the list of shows, wondering which one I'd be willing to settle for if we couldn't get the tickets we wanted. When Amber and I were in London in 1992 we couldn't get the tickets ... read more

Thanks to a Norwegian friend of mum's in Australia we had some advice on where to visit in Oslo; This blog entry and the next one will show some pictures of these places. This blog: mostly Vigeland Sculpture garden, in Froger Park (bus 30 from Akker Brigge) There are 192 sculptures with more than 600 figures, all modeled in full size by Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) without the assistance of pupils or other artists. Vigeland also designed the architectural setting and the layout of the grounds. Ella tells us that the park caused quite a stir when it first opened. ...not much more to add really, photos do the job PS Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday, it was a very nice surprise to see all the messages. Got to get that Freddie Mercury song out of my head!! I have wanted to go to Barcelona for so long, ever since I had a ticket booked, but my companion changed their mind, and at that point I wasn't prepared to go on my own, although I would now! So, first full day of the trip, and I'm already heading out on an excursion (this is unusal for cooks/housekeepers on team!), and I'm very excited. Kate and I work hard to ensure that we have everything we need to have done re: cooking so that we can both go, as most of the guests are also on the excursion. So, off we set, first stop Parc Guell, just one of Barcelona's areas made famous by Antonio Gaudi's designs. Particularly well known from the tourist guides ... read more

Today was Sara’s birthday, she turned 13. The alarm this morning at 7 was too early and the fact that I had to pack weighed to heavily on my mind to allow me to continue to sleep. My bag came together easily and quickly, so we all parked the car and made our way down the dock. We walked to Split to start Sara’s birthday jaunt but were interrupted by a disturbing phone call. Bruno called to say that the charter company hadn’t paid him even though David and Gianluca had given them the money before we boarded. They paid in cash and the girl didn’t make a receipt and now claimed they hadn’t paid at all! Then the police and a jackass from the charter company showed up, caused more problems. Accusations flying everywhere while ... read more

The overnight train was the only option from Krakow to Budapest, so it had to be done. It would have been okay ïf we didn´t have to share the compartment and didn´t get woken up what seemed like every hour by someone checking our passport or tickets. It also seemed to be the slowest train in the world. Adam spent the whole of the morning being eyed up by the old Hungarian lady sitting next to him, she obviously liked what she saw! Needless to say, when we finally made it to our hostel on the Buda side of the river we were in need of a shower and a nap, followed by a big dinner on the Pest side of the river where most of the restaurants and bars are. I was excited by the ... read more

The POV (purpose-of-visit) for this Europe trip. Have only seen it on movies and TV, never dream that I'll get a chance to attend one myself. Am very privileged to be invited by Jiahui & Antonin to attend their wedding. Wonder how the wedding will be, what people will wear, what food will be served :) Will it really be like in the movies? One worrying thing. Other than bringing my dress, I have to pack in my kok kok shoes and matching handbag in my backpack. Never had to travel as a backpacker with a formal dress + heels and handbag. Met Angster and gp at CDG airport to get a lift to Oulches. The 3+ car ride was longer than expected cos tere was a bad jam at Paris City. We stopped by a ... read more
