Got to get that Freddie Mercury song out of my head!! I have wanted to go to Barcelona for so long, ever since I had a ticket booked, but my companion changed their mind, and at that point I wasn't prepared to go on my own, although I would now! So, first full day of the trip, and I'm already heading out on an excursion (this is unusal for cooks/housekeepers on team!), and I'm very excited. Kate and I work hard to ensure that we have everything we need to have done re: cooking so that we can both go, as most of the guests are also on the excursion. So, off we set, first stop Parc Guell, just one of Barcelona's areas made famous by Antonio Gaudi's designs. Particularly well known from the tourist guides ... read more

Europe August 11th 2007

Today was Sara’s birthday, she turned 13. The alarm this morning at 7 was too early and the fact that I had to pack weighed to heavily on my mind to allow me to continue to sleep. My bag came together easily and quickly, so we all parked the car and made our way down the dock. We walked to Split to start Sara’s birthday jaunt but were interrupted by a disturbing phone call. Bruno called to say that the charter company hadn’t paid him even though David and Gianluca had given them the money before we boarded. They paid in cash and the girl didn’t make a receipt and now claimed they hadn’t paid at all! Then the police and a jackass from the charter company showed up, caused more problems. Accusations flying everywhere while ... read more

The overnight train was the only option from Krakow to Budapest, so it had to be done. It would have been okay ïf we didn´t have to share the compartment and didn´t get woken up what seemed like every hour by someone checking our passport or tickets. It also seemed to be the slowest train in the world. Adam spent the whole of the morning being eyed up by the old Hungarian lady sitting next to him, she obviously liked what she saw! Needless to say, when we finally made it to our hostel on the Buda side of the river we were in need of a shower and a nap, followed by a big dinner on the Pest side of the river where most of the restaurants and bars are. I was excited by the ... read more

The POV (purpose-of-visit) for this Europe trip. Have only seen it on movies and TV, never dream that I'll get a chance to attend one myself. Am very privileged to be invited by Jiahui & Antonin to attend their wedding. Wonder how the wedding will be, what people will wear, what food will be served :) Will it really be like in the movies? One worrying thing. Other than bringing my dress, I have to pack in my kok kok shoes and matching handbag in my backpack. Never had to travel as a backpacker with a formal dress + heels and handbag. Met Angster and gp at CDG airport to get a lift to Oulches. The 3+ car ride was longer than expected cos tere was a bad jam at Paris City. We stopped by a ... read more

Our first vacation —yeah! We went 3 hours west to visit the Roman Baths in Bath. What a beautiful city. The river Avon runs right through the middle of town. Magnificent architecture is seen throughout the city with the Royal Crescent, the Roman Bath house, and Bath abbey being the most notable. When we arrived in Bath our first stop was the site of the Roman Baths. They are situated right in the city center. We were able to do a self guided tour and it was very informative. I wouldn’t suggest bathing in them anymore however—the water is a murky green color The water that fills the bath is from a natural hot spring and the temperature is about 46C (115F). It is full of 43 minerals and a bit of iron that causes an ... read more

Summer is here, at least in name...London has been gray, cold and rainy this year (believe it or not, this is not the usual, summers here are mild but sunny, except for this year)...so we are escaping to Spain. We rented a villa with 4 other friends (Paul, Ty, Ben and Emilio) in the town of Javea, about 1 hour south of Valencia...... read more

Iceland isn't as far away as you think. It's about a six hour flight from Baltimore, and we took a red-eye, arriving around 6:30 am local time. I woke up as the plane was descending and looked out on a bright blue morning. A layer of clouds several thousand feet below us obscured the ground. As we descended into the clouds, I watched intently out the window, waiting for that first view of land as we broke the cloud cover. Then we landed. In the clouds. Which turned out to be fog. I never saw the ground until we were about five feet from it. That was kind of weird, but I guess if you fly to Iceland, you land no matter what the conditions are. Rachel and I were meeting several of her friends at ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Flemish Brabant » Leuven August 11th 2007

Having the privilege of avoiding any 'real life' responsibilities (read jobs), one thing we really wanted to do was spend some quality time with friends and family during our trip to Europe. First stop .. a return to Hendrix's birthplace, Belgium. My big brother Gordon and his partner Ingrid live in a cute wee village called Wakkerzeel, just outside Leuven (famous for being the home of Stella Artois) and within an hour of Brussels. With mile upon mile of green, flat farmland and quaint old villages with stereotypical wee pubs and shops it oozes tranquility and has a sweet country community feel. Of course every local area also produces it's own local beers guaranteed to knock your block off. It was great to catch up, and share stories with Gordon and Ingrid, who are just about ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest August 11th 2007

Thankfully I was on a bit of a buzz after the fun I had in Switzerland so I could (almost) keep up with Jen and her friend, Dean, in the partying stakes when I met up with them in Budapest. This city is geered for the summer party season with large open clubs you'd expect to find on a Greek island rather than an inland Eastern European city. Needless to say, any sightseeing I managed during the day was done under much duress as I nursed my hangovers! And to further prove my theory that its never wise to have firm plans when travelling, I found myself in Hungary for the start of Sziget music festival after I remember being so adament to Jen that I would long be in Romania by that time so it ... read more
