Autumn is definately upon us, the season of mellow fruits, silky brown conkers, mists , leaves changing colour on the trees and dew on cobwebs. Gardens are not at their best at this time of year as the flowers have gone over but sometimes you find a garden that bucks the trend and Powys Castle near Welshpool or Trallwng to give it its welsh name is that garden. The castle itself is approached via a one way system which leads to a very large carpark. Being a Monday out of season it was fairly quiet . We noticed the car park was big enough for motorhomes and when we left there were two parked up. Why can't everywhere be like this? The castle itself built of red gritstone is known as Castell Coch in Welsh. Coch ... read more

I had a lovely day out yesterday. I met up with 3 old High school friends in Cardiff for the day. There was no particular reason to meet there, just a change. We took a water bus down to the Bay, had a look round and a long lunch, and before we knew, it was time to get back to the station for our trains home. A good time was had by all.... read more

Ineke, Caroline and I went to Birmingham last week, for a concert - The Vienna boys Choir were at the Town Hall. It was lovely, and we really enjoyed it, especially the song about "poisoning pigeons in the park." We arrived mid afternoon and had a look round before the concert, but the whole world was wanting food and everywhere we went to get tea had long queues. So I ended up with a tuna sandwich from Spar! All good fun. We go again soon, for the christmas market and the Messiah - King's college choir.... read more

Just spent a few days with my school friend Hilary and her husband in Somerset. It was all very jolly, and we had a lovely time with them. It had rained rather heavily just before we went, both here and there, but we made it through. One day we took a steam train along the coast to Minehead. The other day we went to a nature reserve on the Somerset levels, where we saw a swimming snake and a kingfisher, as well as enjoying a lovely walk.... read more

I popped down to Meifod today with a card, as it was Mum and Dad's 65th wedding anniversary - yes, married in 1947 - and it seems like yesterday! Mum said she can hardly remember a time before they'd been together. They had quite a display of cards, and tonight are going to a posh hotel near Oswestry.... read more

This week I took my tent to a site near Ludlow, not much more than an hour's drive. I was lucky to be the only person on the site, thus having 2 loos and a shower to myself. It was beautiful, on a farm in the middle of Mortimer's foest, with walks to be had from the site, practically in any direction. The first morning I woke to see the sun bright on the tent, and shadows of the house martins dancing across. The second morning I could hear lots of heavy breathing followed by thunderous hoof beats - it turned out the calves had escaped in the night and were very interested in my tent!. Today, I just ate my boiled egg with no interruptions!... read more

This annual event gets better every year. This time we were able to have a go at all kinds of craft activities, as well as stroll past dozens of beautifully decorated canal boats, and look at all the stalls. Kids could buy a passport for £1, and could then do 10 activities free all day. We had to pay a bit for what we did, but it was great. The only blemish on the day was I bought Mum and dad a bag of toffee each, and when we called in at their house to give it to them, I found I'd left it on the stall - once I'd paid for it! So they had to make do with a pot of lemon curd.... read more

Ineke and I took our tents to a lovely quiet site betwenn Machynlleth and the sea. We were lucky to get about the best spot there, on a little knoll looking straight down the estuary about 8 miles to the sea. We watched the river get broader as the tide came in, and the train on its way to and fro. We did some walks and some strolling by the sea. It was lovely.... read more
