Sunday 30 December 2007 - 5.45am! The alarm goes off, alerting us that it is time to rise and shine for our fundraising training hike into the mountains, in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Setting the alarm for 5.45am appeared to be a great idea the night before, but now seemed ridiculously early as we slowly awoke bleary eyed, and noted that it was still pitch black outside and very very cold! We embarked on a family training hike today with Steve's dad, Oliver and Steve's brother Malcolm, and drove from Gloucestershire into Wales to reach the start of the hike. Despite being so early in the morning it was glorious to see nature bursting into life and sunrise was beautiful. On reaching the starting point for the 'Brecon Beacons Horseshoe' hike, we had an initial ... read more

Well it's not every day you can proudly say you have competed at an international level in sport but I can now! Today I competed in the World Bog Snorkelling Championships! This wacky event is organised annually by a group of Welshmen who seem to enjoy thinking up crazy things to do over a pint of beer. Check out their website at green-events.co.uk. The event took place at Llantwyrd Wells (not pronounced at all like it looks....you kind of need to do a hacking 'kl' sound at the start followed by numerous vowel sounds which are unfamiliar to Aussie English, finished with a rolling 'r'!) The town is situated in the middle of Wales close to the beautiful Brecon region, amongst rolling hills dotted with grazing sheep and tiny roads fenced in by hedges. It involves ... read more

I've always said that when my fiance and I combine households, we are going to drown in books. Today I worked hard to contribute to our impending deaths by book avalanche. With my recent trip to Scotland and my adventures in England, I decided to go for the hat trick and go to Wales. Barely. My destination was Hay-on-Wye, just over the border. Hay-on-Wye, or "Ham-on-Rye" as a friend suggested to me, began to build its bookish reputation when a London bookseller relocated to just over the Wales border, where the taxes and overhead costs were lower. Book buyers started making the trip, so other book sellers went to where the book buyers were, which were followed by more book buyers... and you get the idea. It snowballed. If you want a list of the bookshops, ... read more

This week will just be pictures. Gretchen and I just got back from a couple of days in Wales, and I just don't have much time to write a blog entry. I have a final exam tomorrow for one of my classes, and we leave at some ridiculously early time in the morning on Friday for our trip to Austria and Italy. But I think there are something like 50+ pictures that I've decided to insert into this entry, so between the pictures and captions, there will be plenty. Oh, and a special thanks to my brother, Mark, for suggesting that I remove the time/date stamps from the photos. As he says, it should prevent some serious photo editing later on if we want to display some of them, which we probably will. In addition to ... read more

Rushing back to England in time for the first game against Paraguay on Saturday. Due to my Argentina cycling top the Welsh assume I'm from South America. It's made for some confusion. Had a glorious week of cycling and climbing high mountains in some of the most beautiful areas of the UK: Snowdonia, the Cambrians, Pembokeshire and Brecon Beacons. Apart from a stupid 87-mile day in blazing sun, ending in sunstroke and dehydration, all has gone smoothly. Only recently it was been discovered that Fan Foel, the highest point in Carmathenshire, was also the burial site of a 12-year-old girl. Her 2,000 year-old remains were only identified this year. The virgin would have been sacrificed to bring fertility to the surrounding fields. But her tomb had been used as a cairn shelter instead for all this ... read more

Since leaving work and my little flat in Loudwater, I have had the unprecedented pleasure of visiting friends and family around the country. It has been such a special time and I have enjoyed so much the luxury of spending time without the pressure of returning to work or the requirement to fit the visit into a particular time. I have been particularly impressed with the beauty of England and reminded myself of how much exquisite countryside exists. May, of course, was the best possible month in which to see all this. I walked amongst ancient oaks and chestnuts in Sherwood Forest, climbed to the top of an ancient Iron Age hill fort in Shropshire, sat beside the quiet waters of Lake Vyrnwy in Wales (photos attached) and in the shade of very old trees in ... read more
