After a restful night's sleep, we woke up at 9:30am London time, and planned on heading out to explore. Poor Mariel woke up feeling ill and ended up staying at her uncle's house for the day to rest up. It's a good thing she did, because Lauren and I ended up staying out in the city for a while 8 hours--8 hours of straight walking. First, we visited St. Paul's s cathedral which was amazing. We bought a day pass, and wondered up hundreds upon hundreds of stairs, up into "The Whispering Dome" and the stone gallery where we had a fabulous view of London. In the Whispering Dome, it is said that the architecture is so perfected that you can whisper onto a wall and the person on the other side of the entire dome ... read more

Wow, a long day of traveling finished, and hopefully not much jetlag in our future. Left San Francisco at 7:30am on Aug. 4, but didn't arrive in London until 1:00pm on the 5th. The plane seemed actually much quicker than 10 hours. For some reason Lauren, Mariel and I somehow got separate seats, which was pretty lame because we couldn't lean on each other to sleep. I was sitting next to this lovely little English girl who was returning home from a 3 week trip visiting friends in Danville, CA. She was quite, polite, and small (which is necessary on an airplane I'd say). Lauren, on the other hand, was stuck sitting next to this 60+ year-old man headed to Iraq to be some sort of architect. He fell asleep A LOT and would accidentally lean ... read more

So last week was my first week of classes and I think it went quite well. My Spanish for Business class is by far my favorite. There are only 5 of us in the class and I actually get a bit nervous when I have to speak because it's been so long since I've had to speak beyond a conversational level. My vocabulary recollection is horrible right now and I am so excited to have the grammar review and the speaking practice all in the context of the business world. It's an advanced class and I really feel challenged. I'm still not used to the fact that classes are only once a week because I'm used to the reinforcement of talking about one subject twice a week. However, the timing of it all is really nice ... read more

Welcome to Richard and Kellie's travel blog. It's been a mad rush trying to get everything sorted including emptying the flat and trying to pass my drving test so Kellie doesn't have to do all the driving (scheduled for tomorrow!), but we're just about there. We fly out to our first destination St Petersberg early Friday morning (25th September). Hopefully we'll get some time in the various places to tell you what we're up to and hopefully share a few photos. Enjoy. Rich... read more

The glitteringly white tables and modern curved chairs are the first things that catch my eye at Ottolenghi in Islington. My friend Mai is a big fan of this Israeli chef and so she booked a table for us at this hugely popular establishment. I have never heard of him but was always keen to try new food. The restaurant, in Upper Street Islington, seats about 50 people and serves small portions of food that are similar in size to tapas however the food is very sophisticated and quite scrumptious. I was happy to let Mai lead the ordering and we started with her choice of grilled peaches, goats cheese, rocket and balsamic vinegar dressing . The goats cheese was creamy and the saltiness cut through the sweetness of the grilled peaches. We next ordered char-grilled ... read more

The Roma B & B has been open for business with a busy spring season. Spring certainly arrived fast in London and we took advantage of the lovely weather and did lots of walks on the weekends. The daffodils in Green Park were particularly stunning as they carved out beautiful garden beds, and we were not the only one's out enjoying the spring time, everyone was having picnics, walking their dogs and eating ice creams in the sunshine. Kate's best friend Marianne came to stay in March which was not only a fun time, but it was also quite a reunion for them both as they had not seen each other since Mari was Kate's bridesmaid at our wedding. So almost 2 years, which was incredible as before that they had always seen each other every ... read more

Happy Easter everyone. Trust you all enjoyed your time off work or study. Well, I’m now unemployed! At the start of April I said farewell (again!) to the Horwich Farrelly gang. We did have one last night of fun, my leaving drinks was a riot with some nice beers and tasty cocktails followed by lots of dancing - wicked times! The next day I made the most of my last day in Manchester by, finally!, visiting the Central Library (very beautiful inside) and then the John Rylands Library which is stunning outside and even more so inside. That night I went to a gig by Denis Jones, a great local musician. The gig just happened to be in a vego café - perfect! I spent the following day with my flatmates at the Ramsbottom Chocolate Festival ... read more

Monday the 2 February 09, London experiences its worst snow in 18 years AND WE WERE THERE. At 6am Anita woke and thought we may have slept in, such was the light coming though the windows, but no: overnight it has snowed and over a foot of snow carpeted the landscape and the reflection has caused it to look unsually light. All the bus services were cancelled and the streets almost empty. All the airpost were closed, train service restricted and even the classic Black Taxis were scarce, but in a city of 10 million there are always a million or so hardy souls and Anita and I made it to work without too much hassle. We were in the minority and at 1pm the office was closed and we were went home. The roads had ... read more

I sat on my bed earlier this week and had the moment. It was about 4 in the afternoon and the sun was setting and I had the most perfect and gorgeous view of the London Eye and the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral. I’m excited to be going home but after seeing that sight, I know I am going to miss London forever. I’m going to miss my London afternoon adventures and how it’s so easy to just turn a corner and find that a huge sight is right in front of you. It’s the London Eye, Parliament, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Piccadilly Circus… I’m going to miss Thai food and definitely Wagamama. I’m going to miss my floor mates (most of them). Even after all the drama, I will miss the kitchen parties too. ... read more
