This second week of work has been great as I'm getting more marketing stuff to work on (updating social networking pages, researching blogging, etc), but I am quite bothered by my allergies. This is probably too much information, but it's the only thing on my mind right now... The weather has improved the past few days from rain, wind, and cold to sunny! However, the air is very humid and the moisture gets trapped in my lungs and in return, flaring up my allergies. It was very awkward in the office today as the room was silent and I was sitting there sniffling away to disrupt it. Wow, this really is too much information about allergies, but my followers should know all of my London happenings... Other than the allergies I've been having a great time. ... read more

This second week of work has really taught me a lot about becoming an adult--it's difficult. Many times I dread going to school, but this is completely different. This is the application of what we learn in school. Everyday I must get up early, get ready, and transport myself to work for a full day. Now I understand why parents and adults are so keen on finding the right job as it's what they do EVERY day. Each day at work is long, but I love it. I love conversing with adults and understanding the workplace. Creating and running a business involves a lot of time, money, and the right people. My company is giving me the chance to be a part of this in terms of marketing. How do we appeal to more people? How ... read more

Today was perhaps one of the most interesting days I have spent in London. You know the late singer Amy Winehouse? Well, I saw her home. She lived in a very edgy part of town--Camden. It is very well known for its music scene and eclectic atmosphere. Her home is up for sale, but I think it's a bit out of my price range. After the visit to her home the group headed over to the hipster part of Camden where there is a long road with funky shops and restaurants (Bang Bang Chicken, for example). For lunch I tried a nutella crepe--heavenly and surprisingly cheap. I absolutley love discovering little places like this. I was also talked into buying a dress...I just had to as Camden is so famous for its market and shopping. There's ... read more

Yesterday, June 16th, the group took a tour of London during the day, which was great! We rode on a double decker bus and saw all the major sites such as the London Eye, Big Ben, St. Paul's Cathedral, etc. It was great to revisit those memories I have from the first time I visited. However, the highlight of the day/night was the Portuguese food. We went to a place called Nando's, which serves pitas, burgers, wraps, and the like. Delicious food! It was an interesting experience as it wasn't a traditional sit-down restaurant. Rather, you order at the counter and they bring out your food, but it had the ambiance of a real restaurant--beautiful artwork on the walls and ethnic music playing in the background. To satisfy our sweet tooth we walked around a bit ... read more

While in London this summer, I am working at International Collective, which is, in its simplest form, an artist management and event planning firm in the Covent Garden of London. My title at work is the Accounts Intern, but based on my work so far and looking forward to the weeks to come, I see myself being an intern of many jobs – like a dog of many tricks. My first day at work was a bit of a shock. Everything about the office was different than I thought it would be (I guess that is to be expected at any new job or internship, though). When I first walked into the building, the décor struck me. Much of the building is very modern – dimly lit with hard, white furniture and shades of pink and ... read more

Transitioning from the American workplace to a European workplace has been an exciting, yet intimidating experience. I am a marketing intern at the company Irresistible Films. This first week of work has taught me a lot about not only the work environment but also how the people interact in the United Kingdom. When I first entered the office I was initially shocked at the layout of desks and how co-workers interact with one another. I pictured something much like the U.S.--cubicles and blocked off desks. The office is a large room with desks divided into pods for each department. Immediately I felt a very relaxed, yet quick-moving vibe. As the week went on I learned that the office is arranged in this fashion for easy interaction between departments and co-workers (I am stationed near the production ... read more

Today was my first day of work! The idea of working in a different country did not really hit me until I got on the bus. I simply get on a bus right outside my residence and get off about 25 minutes later. The nerves really started to kick in once I was en route, but once I made it there I took a deep breath and relaxed. Naturally I arrived way too early (40 minutes), so to kill time I went into a cafe called Nude Espresso and got a delicious skim latte while I waited. I learned that you should familiarize yourself with the coins as there are a ton and you seem to be drowing in them after only a few days. The office itself is only two floors, but has an awesome ... read more

I made it, and I'm all moved in! Today, it's raining quite a bit, but that's London for you, right? One of the presenters during our orientation the other day told us that Londoners talk about the weather a lotbecause they can have all four seasons in one day. Since I have been here, I have gotten lost twice, which led to a lot of exploration. First, my roommate and I went to find a cafe for breakfast. We definitely got lost for almost an hour but found a Farmer's Market and bought bread from a bakery over there. Later, I took the Tube, which is basically the subway system in London, to my workplace, and made a wrong turn to end up in some construction areas. I did make it there eventually, but I am ... read more

Today I ventured around to find out where I work. London is a very confusing city! However, I did get to the right bus stop and find my way to my company. The rain did not help with this. I also discovered there are other interns at my company and am looking forward to meeting them and working with them. Stav (my roommate) and I also walked around and picked up odds and ends for the room. We walked quite a bit and discovered some new places like Sainsbury's and a movie theatre. Finally, Stav, Marissa, and I went to a restaurant right next to our residence and ate dinner and watched the England/France football match! They are very passionate about football here. I hope I develop a liking for it as well. The game ended ... read more

I have made it to the United Kingdom safely! The flight went very smoothly, but getting from the airport to my housing was quite the adventure. I was supposed to take a shuttle, but ended up taking the tube (underground train). We struck up a conversation with a gentleman who knew we were from the midwest somehow. Pretty cool! I definitely feel comfortable in the city at this point. We discovered a cute bakery this morning and had a delicious breakfast. In addition, I had an orientation to familiarize myself with the program, get some tips, and learn a few things about the city. Tomorrow, I am doing a test run to work to make sure I can get there okay! I am one of the few to take the bus versus the tube. Today I ... read more
