One week to go so I guess everyone is getting pretty excited. Last week of exams, lots of marking for the teachers, a weekend spent packing and organising last-minute things and then off to the airport on Monday.... read more

Hello We left Cardiff Wales on Thursday morning in the pouring rain for London but not before we drove a little further south to the seaside town of Barry Island. For those that dont know Chris and I are mad fans of a tv show called Gavin and Stacey and it is a comedy set in that town. It was a three hour drive to London were we were meeting up with Annie as she flew into London that morning to join us for the next 3 weeks. Chris was extremely keen to get there as we also were returning the rental car and that meant no more driving for a few weeks. Yippeeeee not bad seeing we clocked up close to 2000 kms over the UK. We are picking up a car in Italy to ... read more

Gday all Well here we are in London at our second hotel. We didn't have a great start with our accomodation. The first hotel we stayed at was The Blue Bells hotel in Kensington Gardens but it was a 3 storey listed (protected) building so it had no lift and we got stuck on the 3rd floor so after a 14 hour sleep we switched to a chain hotel called the ibis Hotel London Earls Court. A good travel tip here don't try to save 20 pounds, instead, go for the hotel with a lift and porters...lol Checkin was not until midday so we went for a walk around Eals Court/Fulham area with the idea of getting the extra clothes that we needed so after a 2 hour walk we ended up with a cheap mobile ... read more

Malcolm: Today we called an audible. We were going to go to Rye and 1066 country today, but we heard (but never actually confirmed) that Westminster Abby is going to close on April 5, to prepare for the wedding (maybe you heard there is going to be a big wedding at the end of the month). Karen: We really wanted to visit the Abby, so we decided to flip days, and visit the Abby, watch the "changing of guard" at Buckingham Palace and take the train out to Windsor Castle today, instead of Tuesday. All of this made for a very busy, but very fun day. Malcolm: I am pretty sure that the Abby and Windsor Castle were built by aliens. It is the only way to explain how these two unbelievable structures were built over ... read more

CHAOS!!!!!........So much for Jeff's trip-organizing skills.....Next trip we are taking a nice safe bus tour, because at least the guide on the bus tour would not try to load us (cram us is probably a better word) onto a train on the Piccadilly line of the London Underground (which is, by the way, the busiest subway line in the world) at 6:00 p.m. on a Friday night! Admittedly, he was some help getting us out of the airport, but come on....there are 13 million people in this city and all of them were trying to get onto the Piccadilly Line last night at 6:00. Malcolm: I am pretty sure after taking escalator after escalator deeper and deeper that the Piccadilly Line is actually about half way to China. Karen: Today we took double decker bus tour ... read more

Malcolm: We are having a great time. Jeff is trying to kill us. Long walk from plane to train, followed by a two mile walk in central London. Karen: Blake should be proud of Grandma, because we rode the London Eye (the world's largest Farris Wheel). Hotel is awesome and we had a great lunch at an authentic London pub. Malcolm: I don't know how we would have gotten out of the airport without Jeff. He just kept barking "follow me." We took a train from the airport to London, then an real London cab to the hotel. After we had a terrific pub lunch, and then took tube to see Big Ben and ride the Eye. Karen: We also saw Trafalger Square and Buckingham Palace. Now really tired. Hope for a good night sleep and ... read more

The 3rd Celta weekend(14th-15th August) was dedicated to writing assignment number 3- Skills Related Tasks where we had to prepare a listening lesson , with a rationale and 6 follow-on activities. Tue the 17th was a loong day! In the morning we had 1h30min to write our 4th Assignment - Lessons from the Classroom where we had to draw together and articulate what we had learnt about teaching techniques and principles from our own classroom teaching ,observing our peers' classroom teaching and observing experiences teachers at work. We were asked to refer to our own teaching strengths and weaknesses and choose 4 topics to focus on. I chose Concept Checking, TTT, instructions/ setting up activities and use of whiteboard/OHP. In the afternoon I delivered a lesson on skills: a 60min class on Writing a website profile ... read more

CELTA - week 3. I guess this has been the most challenging week so far, with so much going on, that all I could think about at the end of each day was 'Will I ever get my 8 hours of sleep?' That's just because the average sleeping hours have decreased to around 6.5h/night and I honestly cannot function well if I'm sleep-deprived. And to quote Hema, one of the fellow trainees, we should not only work hard on this course, but we should also enjoy it. Anyways, in a nutshell, my group of 6 trainees which taught Pre-Int for 2 weeks are now in charge of Uppr-Int. I had a busy weekend having to do my 2nd Celta assignment, including a lesson plan for a one-to-one class with my case study student and my lesson ... read more

It's been an awfully long and hard week. If I had to recap, it would sound something like this: very little sleep, very much drama. My TP (Teaching Practice) 4 on Tuesday the 3rd on Grammar Practice - Present Perfect + Past Simple was hectic! My tutor actually put the word 'wired' in my TP feedback. Tried to do a zillion activities in 30 minutes. Students enjoyed my 'Pass the orange' game and all other activities, so I was pretty happy with myself. The only problem I had going through all the stages of a grammar lesson was the fact that we did not get any TP notes, which meant that we were basically thrown to the wolves! So as I know my grammar well and love it to bits, I wanted to make a point ... read more

Thanks for all the well wishers for my birthday, it was greatly appreciated. I had an enjoyable and relaxing day with the kids and Sam in Ljubljana (LJ). Dame. Now here is part 2 of Alex´s account of London, with Dad typing! Monday We were up early to catch the coach to Windsor Castle (One of the Queens castle), Bathe and Stonehedge. At Windsor castle we walked through the castle gates where they were changing of the guard. we als walked through St Georges chapel which is the like the Quenns own cathedral. The celings were very high and lots of information on past kings and queens. After walking around the estate we hopped back onto the coach and headed for Bathe. When we reached Bathe we went to the the first Roman baths were built. ... read more
