Switzerland's development stretches back to 1291, when a defensive alliance was formed among three cantons, forming the Swiss Confederation - which gained independence from the Roman Empire in 1499. As a result the Swiss population is formed from distinct linguistic groups, French, Italian, German and the traditional Romansch. It is common for Swiss residents to be multi-lingual.

Switzerland holds mountainous regions, with Jura in the north and the Alps in the south - famous for their ski slopes. The central plateau however holds rolling hills, great lakes and plains, creating a luscious green landscape during the summer months. Famous for it's rural mountain towns with their pine lodges and chalets, Switzerland also holds cities each with a unique character - from the vibrant and thriving, to the traditional and cultured.

Zurich Europe » Switzerland
I am leaving Zurich today and the Rama-Gasser pack. I had a great time getting a real home meal and rest in a real house. We went to Chur and Holdenstein and saw the castles that the Gassers helped to make. I relized how much I for got when I first got there. Certain parts really sparked a memory though. The big ones were the Gasser furniture workshop, the old castle, the new castle garden, and the fountain in the middle of town. It was fun to see all these Gasser icons again and hopfuly put them in my mind better [View Full Entry]

Author's note: This one is still incomplete. I've now posted a few more pictures but I'm waiting for some pictures from David. When/if I get them I'll repost. I’ll just come right out and say it. I had a blast today. All the stars were aligned for a great day on the road - majestic scenery, interesting people, beautiful weather… The day started out at the low point with my training run. It’s an off weekend this week (so no 20+/- mile training runs) but I still had to put in seven miles. The run is over with; that’s the most [View Full Entry]

Interlaken Europe » Switzerland
I hopped on the train to Interlaken about first thing this morning. The trip was fun I saw te Swiss countryside more to the way one expects it. The mid level clouds still hung over the peaks limiting the sight of the big Alps. I got into town and got myself situated in a hostel slash campground. I was thinking of camping but thought with the cough it would not be best. I had a snack on the river outside camp and then made my way up to see some mountains. I went to Lauterbrunnen then Wengen. They were both very [View Full Entry]

Not much new today. It took 12 hours and four trains to get me to Lucerne but I made it tonight. Only one problem - I left my lightweight jacket on one of the trains. Not smart since I’m heading into much cooler weather. I finished The Lost Symbol on my last train. Good but not as good as the last two Dan Brown books. Tomorrow the weather better be nice. I have breathtaking views to take in. [View Full Entry]

Bern Europe » Switzerland
I am on the train to Bern still not feelinghe best butteying to see what I can as I rest. I am by the lake now and the clouds seem to tie to the water creating one vast void as the small villages hold on to the edged of nothing. It seems right that only grapes are being grown as the vines can cling better than most. Occasionly I see a boat floating on the clouds and wonder if it is all vapors. I see my first bovine n' bell and now feel like I am in Swiss teritory. The hills [View Full Entry]

I my second time in Geneve. I got off the train correctly and found that this train takes you to the little station on the other side of town. I had a great walk across town seeing the giant fountain that looked like old faithful. It was hard to find a hostel for a while but did and had a rest. One of the people in my room, a German from the black Forrest area worked for a material science company that tested car and train crashes. He was a civil engineer though. I woke today and decided I needed a [View Full Entry]

Boungiourno from Switzerland Csi, we made it to Switzerland!!! How was our ride??? LLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNGGG. Yes we had an early start today, the trip from Paris to Switzerland was 582 kilometres. Lots of sleeping done on the bus. But it was worth it, Switzerland is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Very mountainious and it was cool. We went on a boat cruise around Lake Lucerne looking at all the very rich homes and Castles around the lakeside. The lake is about 20 miles long and 7 miles wide and has about 4,000 sailboats which sail on it. We had a lovely meal that nite at [View Full Entry]

Life in Lausanne has so far turned out to be pretty sweet. First off - for those of you who don't know - Lausanne is a small city on the shore of Lake Geneva and is the capital of the Canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It is in the French speaking sector (Romandy) and is round about the 4th largest city in the country. I am attending the University of Lausanne's HEC business school. Lausanne is built on a CLIFF! It has 2 metro lines, one running laterally across the city connecting the central district with the western suburbs and the [View Full Entry]
