Switzerland's development stretches back to 1291, when a defensive alliance was formed among three cantons, forming the Swiss Confederation - which gained independence from the Roman Empire in 1499. As a result the Swiss population is formed from distinct linguistic groups, French, Italian, German and the traditional Romansch. It is common for Swiss residents to be multi-lingual.

Switzerland holds mountainous regions, with Jura in the north and the Alps in the south - famous for their ski slopes. The central plateau however holds rolling hills, great lakes and plains, creating a luscious green landscape during the summer months. Famous for it's rural mountain towns with their pine lodges and chalets, Switzerland also holds cities each with a unique character - from the vibrant and thriving, to the traditional and cultured.

Zurich weekend Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Zürich
Saturday was a lazy day - lot’s of sleeping to finally get over the jet lag and the late Friday night at the Huddlestone’s. Today (Sunday) we took a train into the main Zurich railway station to prepare ourselves for our departure to Venice next Friday. The train was the smoothest and quietest I’ve ever travelled on!!! The main Zurich station is enormous - but I guess most capital city stations are. The lower level of the station is a gigantic shopping centre which gave us a chance to reduce the weight of my wallet! Surfaced briefly to take some pictures [View Full Entry]

Zurich Day One Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Zürich
After a very pleasant breakfast in the Hotel Allegra we were picked up by René Huddlestone the Elite Sales Manager for a visit to the Elite factory at Dubendorf, formerly the main Zurich airfield but now used by a couple of small flying school and Ju-Air, a company operating four of the last 5 JU-52 WWII German transport aircraft still flying. The JU-52 was the Luftwaffe equivalent of the DC3 but now is much rarer. When we got to the airfield all four were preparing to take a large group for a flight over the Swiss alps. Unfortunately it was raining [View Full Entry]

After a six hour flight during the middle of the night and NO sleep, I landed in Zurich with an eight hour layover. Instead of sleeping in the airport, I decided to leave the airport. I went to the train station and got a round trip ticket to the city center which was about ten minutes. The main station was in walking distance of a lot of tourist attractions like the famous windows at the Fraumunster Church, the church with the huge famous clock, a street with a dozen or so designer shops, and much more. I took a lot of [View Full Entry]

Arrival Switzrland Europe » Switzerland
So far everything has gone like clockwork. The limo arrived at home as planned - a very smooth large Chrysler driven by a courteous young guy - the trip to Brisbane airport very enjoyable - no traffic worries. The Emirates staff at Brisbane were great - Joan rode a wheelchair and we were whisked through immigration/customs at the speed of light and on to the Brisbane Emirates lounge which was as you would expect, very plush. Priority boarding - again by wheelchair. Brisbane to Dubai in an Airbus A340-500 - Emirates business class superb. The seats converted to beds, and Joan [View Full Entry]

The gentle clang of cowbells reverberated across the mountain valley, echoing off the steep, rocky cliffs towering above us. I smiled and thought: Swiss cows really do wear bells around their necks. I spotted a few of these mellow creatures ambling along a grassy ridge above our trail, a few more down by the clear green lake below us. The morning sun, already warm, drenched the scene in vivid light. The sky was an unreal blue. I took a deep breath of the absolutely fresh air, and began the zigzag [View Full Entry]

Dear Reader, I know last time I promised to write about Zermatt. However, I feel that a word about Swiss youth hostels might be in order at this time. In my opinion the best choice for budget travel in Europe is hosteling. This is especially true in Switzerland. Since I am an American, I had never stayed in a hostel before I arrived in Switzerland. I found that there are two types of youth hostels. Those run by individuals, commonly known as "backpackers hostels" and those run by an organization. In Switzerland that organization is the Schweizer Jugendherbergen (Swiss Youth H [View Full Entry]

The place: A dingy bar in a small town called Uster, filled to the brim with smoke from the cigarettes of the patrons that frequent the area and enjoy the company of others like them who also smell of stale beer. Reasons for being there... 1) Sheer and complete boredom 2) Wish for a good old college bar atmosphere 3) Drink prices 4) Relative closeness to Ashley's apartment/townhouse It may have been our utter lack of originality but for some reason on this Friday night we decided to stay close to where we were staying for the night and go out [View Full Entry]

An important lesson was learnt this past fortnight: the hills are NOT alive with the sound of music. Rather, the rugged mountain peaks groan with sleepless snore-filled nights, dizzying altitudes to 3000m, sunstroke, water scarcity, flaming knee joints and 1000's of vertical meters of sharp rock paths in the race against manic Germans to get to the next beer hut. Lesson number 2: When you're issued with a pre-hike powerpoint presentation entitled: "Let's Cross The Alps", take it first literally, then seriously. Three clueless girls, and one experienced hiker, began skipping through a German [View Full Entry]

I'm hangin it Switzerland st the moment in the beautiful city of interlaken. Its a bit touristy but surrounded by crazy mountains and lakes, and theres a few chill hostels. Since I last wrote I went through Belgium, Luxemburg, and France. It took me a long day of hitching to get from Brussels to Nancy, in France. Met a few cool people, most of whom I couldnt really hold a conversation with my miniscule french vocabulary, but it worked out. Got stuck in a three hour traffic jam and ended up changing rides in the middle of stopped cars on the [View Full Entry]
