Switzerland's development stretches back to 1291, when a defensive alliance was formed among three cantons, forming the Swiss Confederation - which gained independence from the Roman Empire in 1499. As a result the Swiss population is formed from distinct linguistic groups, French, Italian, German and the traditional Romansch. It is common for Swiss residents to be multi-lingual.

Switzerland holds mountainous regions, with Jura in the north and the Alps in the south - famous for their ski slopes. The central plateau however holds rolling hills, great lakes and plains, creating a luscious green landscape during the summer months. Famous for it's rural mountain towns with their pine lodges and chalets, Switzerland also holds cities each with a unique character - from the vibrant and thriving, to the traditional and cultured.

9/10/09 It was a cold, loud and restless night with little sleep. According to Andrew, we had to be out of the parking lot by 7am. Around 6:30am he headed to another parking lot for breakfast. I fell back asleep and woke an hour later in yet another parking lot. He just kept moving us around like fugitives on the run till the campgrounds opened at 9am. We finally got to the campground and got a little shut eye till 10am. We then headed down the river to catch the Gondola up to Gimmelwald and Murren. The view from Murren was [View Full Entry]

From Shell: So while we are having a pretty long holiday..... we were very focused on only visiting Italy, France and Stephen* in Europe, so that we wouldn't spread ourselves too thinly. So imagine our surprise when we spent four hours viewing the most stunning Swiss country-side yesterday (albeit at 150kph!). It all started with our combined wish to travel via train from France to Italy and resulted in our Eurail pass consultant booking us from Lyon, France to Milan, Italy by way of Geneva, Switzerland. Maybe she had something against the Mont Blanc tunnel?? Anyway, the gods of trave [View Full Entry]

Wow, the drive from Austria to Switzerland was amazing, through the Alps and amazing scenery, it was a long driving day which included the stop in Liechtenstein but it was worth it for the scenery alone. Switzerland was beautiful to say the least. We took in a local show for dinner which included yours truly playing the alpine horn (check out Facebook) but thanks to my Aboboriginal heritage it was just like playing a digeridoo! (Apologies as most of you will not understand that joke). Steins were flowing (again) though a few people were still feeling the effects of Oktoberfest. Day [View Full Entry]

Sonntag, den 4.Oktober war es endlich so weit. Mein Gap-Year hat offiziell begonnen!

Even More Primitive
We Are The World, We Are So Primitive

Have you ever felt that you have been called? It is the unexplainable calling from within you. If you try to explain this calling to your families and friends, they will think you have lost it. The Alps that span across Switzerland and Italy are not as colossal as the inspirational but deadly K-2 in Tibet. But once you witness the grandiose view before me, you too will hear that calling from within you. It was just after midnight and the full moon lit these vast valleys and the gigantic white capped mountains. I had both car windows fully opened. The [View Full Entry]

Calanda Europe » Switzerland
This was amazing to say the least! I have a new favorite part of my trip. Every part was better than the prior, and there were so many parts the stack got about as high as the mountain. I got the train from Zurich to Chur. Alice Gasser did not know I was coming but Anna Marie talked to Otto her boyfriend and let him know. I was to stay one night in the Calandahutte and get to the summit in the morning. I got to Chur and then the bus to Haldenstien to start the trek. It started with the [View Full Entry]

Thursday 1st October Blobbing in St Moritz Even after the drama with the semi trailer on the Malojapass yesterday we were both able to sleep soundly and in fact we didn’t wake until after 7.30am. The location of the hotel at Silvaplana just outside St Moritz is very quiet and that probably helped the sleep in. Breakfast is included in the deal here and so we don’t have to organise ourselves for the 6th morning in a row.And it wasn’t a bad feed either with yummy fresh croissants and bread to go with cereals and almost more hot coffee than we [View Full Entry]

Zermatt Europe » Switzerland
My first day back to Zurich I got in late and did no have a solid plan for what to do the next day. But I had mentioned to Anna Marie that I was thnking of the calanda and maybe the Matterhorn, and Jeffery was going out of town to Finland to watch ice hockey so my plans were in the wind. I woke with them having a stake in the ground. Anna Marie had looked at the weather and it was the last day Zermatt, where the Matterhorn is, was to be nice for a while. So I packed a [View Full Entry]
