Switzerland's development stretches back to 1291, when a defensive alliance was formed among three cantons, forming the Swiss Confederation - which gained independence from the Roman Empire in 1499. As a result the Swiss population is formed from distinct linguistic groups, French, Italian, German and the traditional Romansch. It is common for Swiss residents to be multi-lingual.

Switzerland holds mountainous regions, with Jura in the north and the Alps in the south - famous for their ski slopes. The central plateau however holds rolling hills, great lakes and plains, creating a luscious green landscape during the summer months. Famous for it's rural mountain towns with their pine lodges and chalets, Switzerland also holds cities each with a unique character - from the vibrant and thriving, to the traditional and cultured.

Weekend in Geneva was fantastic. The beautiful autumn weather has arrived. Below is an op/ed I wrote for the hometown newspaper. ----- The elderly French woman looked at me, before saying a word to the class, and asked to the sole American in the cosmopolitan class of students, what is your country's health-care system? This was the day after yet another proclamation about the state of our nation's health-care system that made international headlines. She wanted to try to make sense of our health-care "crisis." So do I. I had many opinions I wanted to share, but chose my word [View Full Entry]

It was only when we got out of bed this morning that we discovered just how stiff our legs and muscles were after yesterdays hike up Mount Hochfluh. However we have a drive ahead of us today that will take us over another alpine pass and thankfully that will probably mean that we will be spending a good part of the day in RR. D & S were up early and had breakfast on the table for us.Di said she was feeling the walk from yesterday but was OK.While we were having breakfast we had a phone call come in from [View Full Entry]

Saturday 26th September Climb every mountain................ We had a lie in this morning and rose to be greeted by fog.Di and Sebastion(hereafter D & S) had the breakfast already laid out for us and we sat down to discuss the options for the day ahead.D & S are keen on buying a new property closer to where they work and they were going to meet up with Sebastion’s friend, who went off last night to climb Mt Pilatus, and talk over the pros and cons of the property. We would tag along and then afterwards Sebastion has a climb in mind for us,if [View Full Entry]

We have a fairly straight forward drive today through the Black Forest south to Switzerland. We have had a very pleasant stay here in Bad Peterstal as the apartment has been very well equipped and the location above the town has been very restful. We would have liked to have indulged in the Black Forest by taking some walks like we had hoped but perhaps today as we drive south today there may be an opportunity for us to do that. The weather is sunny again and it should be a good day for driving and taking in the scenery as we travel [View Full Entry]

I am actually back in Frnace now having just returned from our 3 day stint in Switzerland. Let me just say WOW. Switzerland is the most beautiful place by far. I made up their motto "Keep It Green Keep It Clean". They Recycle everything etc. and there is no rubbish anywhere and its just wow... green and lush. Before i get to that though i shall retrace my past week since Nice the first (im in Nice again for a night, just passing through). After our rainy day in Nice/ Monaco we hopped aboard the busabout bus and headed to our [View Full Entry]

Church bells ring for 5 minutes straight at 7AM in Switzerland, apparently...hahah. We got up pretty early and had a great breakfast at the place where we are staying. It is a really cool old house and the woman who runs it, Evelyn, has been very helpful. The breakfast was good. Swiss cheese is better in Switzerland, I think; I hate it at home. We took a cable car up to Mt. Pilatus in the morning. You have to change cars near the top because it is so steep it takes a special one. At the station where you switch there [View Full Entry]

Sorry I haven't been able to update this thing. The place that we stayed in Munich didn't have internet. On Sunday we went to Rothenburg, which was great. It is a medieval walled town that is one of the best preserved anywhere. It is only about an hour and a half drive from Veronika's hometown. We spent a lot of time on the Autobahn and here's what I have observed about German driving: (1)If people knew how to drive, speed limits would be unnecessary (2)Stop signs are a waste, Germans have yield signs 90% of the time and it works for [View Full Entry]

I am leaving Zurich today and the Rama-Gasser pack. I had a great time getting a real home meal and rest in a real house. We went to Chur and Holdenstein and saw the castles that the Gassers helped to make. I relized how much I for got when I first got there. Certain parts really sparked a memory though. The big ones were the Gasser furniture workshop, the old castle, the new castle garden, and the fountain in the middle of town. It was fun to see all these Gasser icons again and hopfuly put them in my mind better [View Full Entry]
