Switzerland's development stretches back to 1291, when a defensive alliance was formed among three cantons, forming the Swiss Confederation - which gained independence from the Roman Empire in 1499. As a result the Swiss population is formed from distinct linguistic groups, French, Italian, German and the traditional Romansch. It is common for Swiss residents to be multi-lingual.

Switzerland holds mountainous regions, with Jura in the north and the Alps in the south - famous for their ski slopes. The central plateau however holds rolling hills, great lakes and plains, creating a luscious green landscape during the summer months. Famous for it's rural mountain towns with their pine lodges and chalets, Switzerland also holds cities each with a unique character - from the vibrant and thriving, to the traditional and cultured.

Christmas Greetings Europe » Switzerland » North-West » Berne
Dear friends, a year ago we celebrated christmas in the heat of Uruguay. With 40 degrees on the beach we did not have any christmas feelings. This year, after a week in the Dolomites with -20 degrees we do have a real christmas feeling - still nearly as relaxed as in Uruguay. We wish you all a "Merry Christmas", some peaceful and relaxed days and a smooth start into 2010. All the best! Hola amigos, hace exactamente un ano que pasamos navidad en el calor de Uruguay. Con 40 grados en la playa no teniamos sentimentos navidenos. Este ano, despues de [View Full Entry]

D-Day Europe » Switzerland
Caving was exhausting! But once everyone was cleaned up, all the long term and short term staff met in the staff room to enjoy hot chocolate, cheese and crackers. The buzz of night was about D-Day. Posters had gone up while we were on our adventure promoting the activity we were scheduled to do; instructing us to bring in our backpacks a comfortable change of clothes, our toothbrush, the largest spoon we could find, a roll of toilet paper. We were told to get ready tonight and to not bother setting our alarm clocks for the next morning. We were all [View Full Entry]

Training and Caving Europe » Switzerland
December 14, 2009 Today was an exhausting day of training. We covered so much material in such a short period of time. 08:00 Thought of the Day: the director read an inspirational poem from Lord Baden Powell; we talked about our schedule; and drew names for secret santa. 08:20 We learned how to give a proper tour of the Chalet. From interesting facts to which rooms to show guests. 09:00 We had a group meeting with all the new short term staff members and the three head people to discuss cultural differences, rules, and procedures. This meeting was mostly to point [View Full Entry]

Arrival Europe » Switzerland
Right now I am on the train. I am heading to Bern. I think. After a two hour car ride to the Orlando Airport; a night flight from Orlando to London; then a another plane ride from London to Geneva; I am now in the Swiss countryside. But I am not positive which side of the county I am on. After I departed the plane I breezed through customs. I actually was not even sure I was going through it at the time. I thought I was in one line which would lead me to another queue and then I would [View Full Entry]

Ballenberg sequel Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Interlaken
As we've seen, I found the spring hatmaking course at Ballenberg to be superb. This summer, at home in western New York State, I located a farmer who was growing an ideal stand of winter rye. In mid July, before the seed heads filled, I got permission to harvest enough straw to stock my greenhouse/studio for hatmaking over winter. The greenhouse lends itself well to plaiting, as I've configured it on a heated concrete slab, which I poured a few years ago. I'm able to heat the slab with hot water from our wood boiler in the old milkhouse next to [View Full Entry]

Day 12: Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 Lucerne, Switzerland Morning has broken, like the first morning. From our hotel room window, we're able to see some of the mountains and already I'm in love. While our hotel is in Lucerne, we are a ways away from the hub of it so we get back on the bus and it takes us into town. This is something we will soon get use to because Contiki saves us money by booking hotels that aren't close to the action (with a few exceptions). Lucerne is adorable/gorgeous/many other words I feel like I've used too many [View Full Entry]

Zurich, Switzerland: I have to admit, Switzerland, much less this place called Zurich, was not on my top “too see” list when traveling to Europe. I can’t really provide a valid reason for this, but needless to say I was shocked at myself for deciding to travel to Switzerland for the weekend. My afterthoughts on Zurich? WOW! It is truly the prettiest city I’ve ever visited and might just have to steal the number 1 spot for my travels so far. The best way I can think to describe it is like New York (only way cleaner, much smaller and without [View Full Entry]

OK.. Here the blog continues! So where I left you off was from Wednesday when I had just arrived in Switzerland. The next couple of days would be great fun times with Lukas, Louie, Catherine, Linda and Leonie! It was great to see them all and see what they have been doing. It also gave me time to reconnect with Switzerland! Its not hard to enjoy the Alps, the cuisine and the times in this small little place. The cows were mooing, and you could often hear the clanging bell moving around on the mountainside. I would have liked to go [View Full Entry]

Day 11: Monday, December 7th, 2009 Paris, France to Lucerne, Switzerland Editors note: This has been a whirlwind tour so I am now writing the blogs from December 7th -17th today, December 18th, as we drive from Munich to Vienna. Needles to say, I'm sure there are many things I've forgotten. Oh well. This was a loooong driving day. The country side was pretty so that helped, but the only thing to note is that I had my first encounter with a french toilet. It's the moment you all have been waiting for. What will Amanda say about the toilets in [View Full Entry]
