After a break, determined to complete the Russia blogs before the anniversary of the trip. We arrived in NN and the driver who met us took off at a fast pace to his car which was parked some distance from the station. It was grey, cold and raining,a real shock after the warmth of Yekaterinburg. We checked into our huge hotel situated next to the Lenin statue and near the bridge over the Oka river to the old town and the famous Kremlin.Maxim Gorky, the famous Russian playwright, was born here and it is still listed as Gorky on railway timetables. We caught a bus into town as it was so wet and headed to the Kremlin. It dates back to the 15th century, has 12metre high walls,13 towers and overlooks the point where the Oka and Volga rivers meet.It is largely ... read more

Met again by a non English speaking taxi driver -notice a pattern emerging !- and whisked through the underground walkway and then the car park to his car. This is Russias 4th largest city and a real culture shock with modern high rise buildings and lots of neon flashing lights.Nevertheless we are heading ever closer to Moscow, only 2 hours time difference now. Our hotel was called the Guru Hotel and was a bit unusual. The rooms were in a building housing a dance studio and it wasn't obvious from the outside that this was even a hotel as there were no signs. even the taxi driver wasnt sure, and insisted on waiting til we went in.We checked in and went straight to bed as it was nearly midnight. Breakfast next morning was a small buffet in a room ... read more

We got a marshrutka* from Lake Baikal to Irkutsk which dropped us near the bus station.*this is a common form of transport in Russia, they are minibuses that use fixed routes and are relatively cheap. We knew our hotel wasn't far but, not sure of the actual location and with two heavy rucksacks, we negotiated a price with a taxi driver who drove us the short 5 minutes to the hotel Viktoria. We were checked in by a lovely English speaking receptionist and chilled out in our large room.It had an en-suite complete with bath which is unusual in Russia. We had some laundry to catch up on and attempted to log in on the pc but there was a network problem so we headed out to eat.The hotel was just off Karl Marx Street, one of the main streets. This street ... read more

We were met on the platform by a non English speaking taxi driver who took us to the tall grey Communist style square building that was our hotel. It was another warm day,mid seventies-no complaints. The hotel was situated at the point where the two rivers, the Irytysh and the Om meet, and it had a very seaside feel about this small area of the city as there was a large sandy beach complete with lifeguard,a couple of changing huts, showers and ice cream sellers. We checked into the hotel and I opened my birthday presents and cards.I had taken a few cards with me and Steph had bought me a lovely blue necklace in Listvyanka. She had also been carrying a few pressies around with her-a Sydney Bridge climb hat ( I bought one in 2007 but managed to lose it ... read more

Apologies for the delay, but normal blog service is being resumed, slowly... Katya met us at the Irkutsk railway platform and whisked us to Listvyanka on the shores of Lake Baikal about 60km away. The drive took us swiftly onto the main road linking the two towns cutting a swathe through the forest. The town of Listvyanka consists of one road that stretches 4.5km along the lake shore with 3 valleys that run inland. It has a couple of restaurants, the Lake Baikal museum, a few hotels, some bed and breakfasts,a market, tourist offices, the Nerpinarium-more of this later,a post office,a few small shops and a cake shop.We stayed in a two storey wooden bed and breakfast 5 minutes from the Lake shore. There is no public transport so walking was required to get anywhere. We had a nice meal on our first evening next ... read more

Ulan Ude was a haven of peace and tranquilty, maybe not surprising with it's close proximity to Mongolia and it's mainly Buddhist population. We were met at the station by a very enthusiastic,English speaking guide and a driver-not something we were accustomed to.We were staying at a large hotel very close to the main city square which has the worlds largest Lenins head - weighing 42 tonnes and standing just over 25 feet high - in it.The square is still used for military parades. We ventured out after checking in and witnessing a huge thunderstorm. The area had not had much rain recently so the violent storm was much needed but the parched ground did not drain very well so the pavements and roads quickly became rivers.... read more

Khabarovsk was very hot and humid - 31degrees apparently. We found it to be a really attractive city centre, and enjoyed walking down by the river, which was more like being at the seaside. Cant imagine it with the river so frozen that cars can drive on it. We explored the Museum of Regional Studies to get out of the heat (meeting our new Aussie friends along the way). Unfortuantely hardly any English descriptions, but it varies from stuffed local animals, through local tribal history, to general russian history and household items. Not much else to see or do, but still worth an overnight stop. We stocked up on food for the train journey and as a noisy thunderstorm broke we again strugled for a bit to find somewhere to eat, before ending up in a ... read more

The Trans Siberian railway deserves a blog of it's very own. Our first experience was the overnight journey from Vladivostok to Khabarovsk. We had already collected our tickets the day before so knew the layout of the railwaystation but waited in the central seating area for the number of our platform to be displayed and number 1 duly came up.Luckily this was only down one flight of stairs and through the doors so was relatively easy.We located our carriage, number 12,and the provodnitsa (attendant) who was a bit bemused by our e-ticket but let us on so we boarded our first Trans Siberian train at 7pm.The locals have to show their passports to board the trains but so far we have not had to,maybe we're not quite blending in with the locals yet. We found our four ... read more

'After a 3 hour flight we were last ones off the plane as Steph had to see the end of the film she had been watching, much to the annoyance of the rest of the passengers on the flight who were waiting on a bus. The bus then turn right and drove all of 50m to the terminal before we headed into the free for all of immigration (only 2 lines open). Other than that we made it into Russia without any problem. Fortunately we had arranged a transfer into the city, as its quite a way from the airport, and after settling into our hotel, had a look round Russia. At this point, the absurdity of what we were about to do started to hit, as we struggled to find a restaurant in the rain ... read more
