Hello As we got back from Istanbul 6 weeks today I think I will let the pictures do the talking. I really enjoyed the visit and would recommend it for a short break. The buildings are stunning and it's quite a novelty to be able to visit Europe and Asia in one day as the city is built on both continents.Transport is cheap and easy to use so we made the most of this and travelled by boat, bus, tram, metro and funicular.Food is plentiful and readily available as is the delicious apple tea.The people were lovely and ,luckily, most of them spoke very good English. Highlights for me were the church of St Saviour in Chora;watching the sunset form a rooftop bar overlooking the city; The Imperial Hall in the Harem in Topkapi Palace; the bus ride over the Bosphorus ... read more

This was a brief sortie, by intrepid travellers standards, but a lovely place to visit for a short break and we took a step into the unknown by flying with Ryan Air !! Santiago de Compostela is a city in the region of Galicia in north west Spain. It is a UNESCO World Heritage City and final destination of the Way Of St James pilgrim route. The relics of St James, one of Christ's 12 disciples, were discovered here in the 9th century and these are now kept in the cathedral which was begun in the 10th century.Pilgrims from all over the world visit the city each year.( Be warned,I will ask questions later !! ) The actual pilgrims route is 900km long ,running from France and is symbolised by a shell and a stick. The shell could be used as ... read more

Back home and time to write about the remainder of our time in Costa Rica. I know I left you hanging last time but obviously, despite the hiccup we completed our trip and (reluctantly) came home. On March 14th we were due to move to a hotel in Drake Bay but there was a huge mix up which left us without accomodation. Normally this is not a big problem but the only feasible way to leave the area was by the daily boat taxi leaving in the afternoon. We booked this and had an eventful journey to Sierpe later in the day. It was Spring high tide so we had to wade through waist high water to reach the boat and then travel in the dark along the Rio Sierpe, with a handheld torch and fireflies ... read more

Costa Rica - a real culture shock after Colombia - full of Americans !! The pictures probably tell the tale better than I can but here is a brief summary of what we have been up to since we arrived. We arrived and sailed through the arrivals procedure. A driver was waiting to collect us and the only difficulty we had was getting the baggage to him through the over officious 'trolley guards'.We drove through rush hour with a magnificent sunset showing us the way. We had one night in a hostel (although we would return here after the tour) on the edge of town and a wonderful dinner in an Argentine restaurant a few blocks away. Next morning we had an early start for our flight to Tortuguera on the Caribbean coast. (We thought we ... read more

Hello from Costa Rica and time to let you know about our adventures in Colombia ,but first a quick up date on what we did in Quito which sandwiched the trip to the Galapagos.Confused, well that makes at least 3 of us ! We flew into Quito from Lima and got a taxi to the Quito Hotel which seemed very 'un' Explore like as it was a big modern hotel. (S- we had booked our Galapagos trip with Coral''s previous employer, Explore) However, the room was large and there was a bath so very acceptable as far as I was concerned. Our GAP welcome meeting was postponed for 24 hours, as people had been delayed by the snow in the UK. (S- the trip was actually provided by another travel company, called GAP) We had dinner in ... read more

Hello from Steph (chilling at a beach resort in Colombia, while writing this) Sorry for the lack of blog over the last few weeks, but we've been too busy having a good time. Coral's written about Galapagos, but here's a brief catchup on some of the things we did before that. Puerto Varas was a quiet little town on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, with the view over the lake dominated by Osorno volcano. It was nice to stay in a very comfortable hotel, although the town itself was a bit sleepy. We took a day trip from here to another town on the lake, called Frutillar, whose buildings reflected the German settlers of this area. We also watched Barrack Obama's inauguration on the big tv in our room with commentary courtesy of the BBC on ... read more

Apologies for the lack of blogs recently but the internet access has been intermittent and, more to the point, we have been far too busy enjoying ourselves !! Being on some of the Galapagos Islands was like stepping back into the dinosaur era with 1 metre long iguanas camouflaged against the rocks and large pre-historic shaped birds castings eerie shadows. We stayed on a GAP Adventure boat designed to take a maximum of 20 passengers. There were twin cabins on the upper and bottom deck with two double suites on the middle deck. The mid deck also had the dining area and a sitting area ideal for briefings. There were loungers at the front of the boat and tables&chairs at the back under cover. We were very lucky to be given a cabin on the top deck with a large ... read more

Hello from Steph. I'm making a guest appearance at writing the blog, so it may not be up to the usual standards! We have had a really good time since leaving Ushuaia, and have made up for all the overnight bus trips and dodgy hostels with a bit of comfort, starting with the Mare Australis. This was a 3 day cruise to Punta Arenas in Chile, on a smallish boat with 132 passengers from 19 countries including just 7 from the UK. The ship was very luxurious and we had a huge cabin, with beds rather than bunks, and a big window to watch the scenery go by. It was “all inclusive” and the food was excellent and plentiful. Oh and there was plenty of wine and cocktails, although we only really tried these out on ... read more

Hello folks Happy New Year from Ushuaia - hope 2009 gives you peace, good health and happiness. We survived the 16 hour bus journey from Mar Del Plata and found the hostel, our new home for 5 nights -almost a permanent location in our hectic schedule. We lost an hour in transit so settled for a New Years Eve pizza in town before falling asleep well before midnight. I think we did manage to stay awake for the New Year to arrive in the UK - about 9pm. Vaguely remember hearing some fireworks but was a bit of a blur. New Years Day was a quiet one to get our bearings and visit the beach to get sand blasted. We also found out some info on tours in the region as this is an area rich in ... read more
