So we did a real whirlwind trip of Switerland. We arrived in Interlaken in the evening and I immediately decided I loved Switzerland. There are cute little Swiss chalets everywhere, just like I'd imagined. And it's such an outdoorsy, active place. There are so many things to do during the day...sky diving, canyoning, rafting, mountain biking...which is why so many people go there. Unfortunately we had very little money to enjoy these activities, so we spent our day doing the only free thing offered... hiking through the Alps. Amazing. The hike was entirely up hill for nearly 5 hours, and was by far the most difficult hike I've ever done. Thinking back I find it hard to believe we actually made it to the top. 2048 metres up!! And it was sooo worth it for the ... read more

We've made a decision. A large one I suppose. Before I reveal the decision I would like to outline a few of the factors: 1) Being cooped up in our little hotel in Grindewald for all but two hours of the day due to foul weather. 2) Our initial excitement over the exchange rate from the dollar to the swiss franc (the first positive one we've had) having been decimated by the price of everything and paying 40 francs for parking in Zurich. 3) Eating salami, assorted swiss cheese cubes with pretzel rolls that we bought at the market for lunch and dinner because it is too expensive to eat in restaurants. 4) Realizing that we were supposed to get some special sticker for our car in order to drive in Switzerland but neglected to do ... read more

Hey everyone, from now on, please check our blog site at the NEW location, which is here: http://sandra-and-derek.blogspot.com/ I think the way to subscribe is a little different, but it is only an RSS feed, and you should be able to click on the link marked 'atom' at the bottom of the page to do this. I will provide more details on this once I figure out how to do it myself. Some of the entries will also be out of order until we have time to fix that, too. Sorry for the confusion, everyone...... read more

For some reason the site doesn't want to take our pictures, so I went ahead and uploaded them to our (dwindling) photobucket site. We don't have much on there, except for the Grindewald pictures until the site is working again. Here's the link: http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c363/KHervey/ (Hopefully it works...) This was my first summer trip with Oak Hall, and this time I'd volunteered to work as a cook. More excited about cooking that housekeeping to be honest, and then we got there, and there it was, not only cooking, but housekeeping too! That is one lot of work - thankfully we had some incredibly helpful guests who helped us out, not only in the kitchen, but with the cleaning, which truly is not (as was not) expected, but THANK YOU! The trip (CH10) was to Obergesteln in Switzerland... a fair coach journey away, including an amazing journey over the Grimmelwald pass (which some found less than amazing, and I guess it is quite twisty!). Slight incident on the way down - you would have thought that the Mercedes could see the coach coming (w... read more

So after soaking sweat through our clothes, drinking all our water, and then reaching only the half-way point for our hike, a few hours later, we called it a day. What was posted on a local sign as an hour hike to a glacier, turned into a 3 hour hike, through what seemed like a Swiss wilderness!:) (What we understood on the sign was hike, what they meant was twenty minute drive to the parking lot, and 40 minute hike to the glacier. It took us the whole hour and a half to get to the parking lot!) We both decided hiking is not so bad, but we much prefer surfing for the reward! There's something blessed about being in water and being able to ride a wave and dip back into the cool water. We ... read more

Well, it looks like all of our blogs before this morning's post were lost in a server crash or something like that. Bummer. Its OK though because we know that everyone reads them all the day we post them so none of you missed any. We are in Grindewald now and have settled into our hotel for a two night stay. We are looking forward to exploring in and around Grindewald. The weather is beautiful (about 80 degrees) and clear. There is still snow on the mountain peaks and we are nestled right in the middle of all of them. We've posted a few pictures from our last few days. Enjoy. Chet... read more

Monday 6th August Day Twenty-One, We wandered up the lane to the local train station 'Sihlwald'. It looked like something straight from the 40s and had stacked logs and even an old steam train! We arrived in Zurich and walked over then along the river. Exploring the quiet, shady streets we found 'Café Schober', as recommended in the rough guide. This funny little place was a Swiss Chocolatier on the inside with a café on the patio outside, bedecked with false flowers and serving amazing drinks, cakes and desserts (we had hot chocolate). Some more strolling round the old town followed, then a stop by the lake to people watch (including crazy diving antics!) and finishing with a glimpse of the newtown's expensive shops and business-lunchers! We returned to the old town to choose the best ... read more
